Nationals last minute sellers?

He's Bryce Harper..I bet if it were solely up to Mark A..he'd make sure the deal got done. He couldn't buy the kind of publicity the Brewers would get from acquiring Harper..not to mention every home game the rest of the year would be a sell out.

Brewers fans already support the team in attendance and the team is in the middle of a pennant race. I don't think adding Harper would add a material amount of additional ticket revenue. Mark A has let Stearns do his thing so far (rebuilding without tanking) so I would hope he'd continue to keep his hands off and let his baseball people run his baseball team.

Not much interest in giving anything of value for Harper. If you are going to try to make that kind of splash, go for Realmuto.

In a way the Nats are almost lucky things are going the way they have this year. I think they were very likely to start a pretty fast decline from their peak anyway (age + injury histories + much better competition in the East), but this allows them to cash in on assets while they still can instead of keeping them all for an 87-win season with absolutely nothing to show for it. Harper's season in particular makes it a lot easier to trade him.

On top of that, I think they can be a contender again pretty quickly. Soto, Eaton, Taylor, Turner, Rendon with Robles on the way is enough to work with. Scherzer is still going strong and they have to just pray for Strasburg to be healthy next year.

Is Gio Gonzalez an upgrade over what we have? I don’t think so.

Gonzalez was excellent in 2017.

In 2018 his numbers look decent on the surface. Then you dig a bit deeper and his 1.45 WHIP sticks out like a sore thumb...

There is no doubt in my mind that Gio is a safer bet to be a better pitcher than Wade Miley for the rest of the season.

Somebody on twitter proposed a really interesting trade with Harper...

3-way trade between Oakland, Miami, and Washington

Harper to OAK

Realmuto to WSH

prospects to MIA

Honestly makes the Nationals better, gets them a great young catcher with control, and they can still resign Harper in the offseason if they want. Gives Oakland a huge bat. Gets Miami a lot of young talent for their rebuild.

Harper is going nowhere. Its nothing but a "why not" net cast by the Nationals to see if someone is dumb enough to give up the farm for a 2 month rental of Harper based on his name. No one will, so nothing to see.

Barf.

I mean why? What's the point?

Gio > Wade Miley

And not close. Right?

Certainly has been more effective in recent seasons. Of the rentals out there, he might be the best one left. But that isn't saying much.

I doubt he takes Miley's rotation spot, though. Wouldn't surprise me if they shifted Peralta to the pen.

Guess I was hoping for a little more splash. Gio isn't the "needle mover" Stearns spoke of a couple weeks ago. Of course, that was pre Suter injury.

You want to tweet that it's done or should I handle this one? :laughing

I don't have a strong opinion on Gio. He's been very good, contract year, decent ERA/FIP, almost 6 innings per start. Also I tend to wonder if DJ likes Gio and thinks he has a mechanical tweak in mind that can help him down the stretch. All that said, I feel he's overachieved the last year+ based on his stuff and is due some regression.

Not a splash play, by any means, but he could replace Wade Miley as our lefty starter down the stretch. I have to imagine they’re hoping Davies comes back and is effective—just in time to shut Peralta down. He’s looking a little worn out, as others have mentioned.

So are the dang Nationals selling or not?

This is GM-speak just like the Royals, Mets, and Brewers before the season. They probably can stand pat/keep trying to win but they'd sell if they got the right offer. This seems to come up on a lot of these threads. Just take it as "we want better offers and don't 100% have to sell the listed assets we have" whenever these GMs say this.

Reading all these tea leaves feels like a fool’s errand today. Plus, I’m not sure these NL East GMs know what the situation really is on the ground. The Phillies are kind of a paper tiger (barring some big FA signings, which could come this winter), and the Braves are young and untested. On one hand, I’m sure the Mets and Nationals have good reason to think they can get back in competition in relatively short order, hence the hesitation to strip their operations to the studs. But their recent track records of on-field performance and front office decision-making wouldn’t inspire a lot of confidence if I was a fan of either club.

IDK, that would have given them a pretty good leg up to sign him, especially with his relationship with Bryant. Not sure I'd want him on the Cubs the next 6 years. Glad to see him to the Yanks instead.

If the Cubs are going to sign him, I don't think it really matters if they give up something for him first or not.

Not even sure I would mind. If they want to pay Mike Trout tier money for a guy with one elite season, that's ok. They don't have unlimited resources.

Yea a Harper/Bryant/Rizzo combo for the next 6 years doesn't scare you? Put Harper first in the trio so he can't get walked a million times, or if you do walk him you're setting up some problems. They pretty much do have unlimited money to spend.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok with the Nationals finally selling off some parts, these two names intrigue me most.

1) Kelvin Herrera. With the struggles of Knebel and Albers, he may be worth the risk that he finds the success he had in KC earlier this season. Herrera, Soria, Hader Jeffress means a lead after 4 or 5 innings should be game over.

2) Matt Weiters. He has had a Manny Pina esque surge in batting average and on base percentage since i cut him in fantasy 6 weeks ago. A switch hitting backup catcher that would be a decent pinch hit option And better than Kratz.

Come on Stearns.......

Oh and stay away from Gio

Herrera will never make it past the Dodgers who have waiver priority over us. They really need pen help and they'd be foolish not to claim him.

Wieters...meh. He doesn't do much for us. Pina has been swinging a hot bat too. I'd rather get someone like Francisco Cervelli.
