Matt Carpenter

Would the Cardinals allow this guy to go free? You would be buying at the peak and he’s owed $15M next year and $18.5 in 2020 (w/ a $2M buyout) so he’s not cheap by any means. He has been very consistent over his career. He isn’t a great defender. But he’s a very good hitter. Could he bridge the gap to Hiura? Or even make a guy like Shaw/Aguilar/Thames expendable in the offseason. Just tossing it out there.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I think the only way the Cardinals deal Carpenter is if they decide to rebuild. However, sadly, that franchise does not rebuild. They never die.

To make the chances of a trade even more slim this would be an intra-division trade that would require significant pieces to change hands. I don't think the Brewers want to see Luis Ortiz turn into Lance Lynn and Corey Ray turn into Tommy Pham.
