Diamondbacks Acquire Matt Andriese From Rays

The only thing I find interesting about this trade is that the Rays acquired a major league ready catcher (Perez) in the deal.

Ramos is a free agent at the end of the year so they can use a replacement.

Correct, it makes plenty of sense from that standpoint. It also makes it easier for them to trade a catcher this year. I know Ramos is on the DL, but he could be an August waivers trade candidate if they don’t move him before the deadline.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I wouldn't trust Ramos to get through waivers without another team blocking the move. Ideal situation would be for teams to agree to a trade now, with the main piece being a PTBNL that would be largely based on some sort of "days on the 25 man roster" incentive.

If I understand the PTBNL rules correctly, to be a PTBNL the player cannot be on the 25 man roster & that player has to be eligible for trade the day the trade is made.

The MLB office closed the old loophole where a recently drafted player (who couldn't be dealt at the time of the deal) would be the player dealt because the day the trade was later completed that recent draft pick was now eligible to be dealt.

Wilson Ramos, C, Rays

There's a myth out there that says that players on the disabled list can't be traded, and it's simply not true. (As one of many examples, Bronson Arroyo and Phil Gosselin were both hurt when they were swapped on opposite sides of the Touki Toussaint trade.) Ramos was off to a fantastic start (.297/.346/.488) before he tweaked his hamstring, but he's expected to return in early August, and the best destination is the same as it's always been, because his old mates in Washington are suffering through one of the weakest offensive catching seasons (.183/.267/.266) of the 21st century.

Prediction: Nationals

And we thought our catching was bad.... WOOF.

I'd like Ramos . Pina can back him up and be where he belongs - in a backup role.

Just a friendly reminder that Ramos is dreadful defensively. CS% 17 and 22 percent the last 2 seasons. Obviously his bat is an upgrade, but be aware you are sacrificing defense if he's acquired.

If I had to pick between arm and a guy that can block balls, frame pitches and call a game - I would take the latter.

I have no idea if Ramos does those things either.

I just don't think teams run enough nowadays that the arm is a priority, but it is hard to put a stat to the rest of the stuff a catcher does.
