Red Sox Acquire Nate Eovaldi from Rays

Seems like a pretty solid return for the Rays. The Brewers don't have a great comp for Beeks in their system - Adrian Houser, maybe? I'd take Houser over Beeks, though.

With the caveat that Eovaldi is a steep injury risk even over the remaining 1/3 of the season, I do think this puts in perspective how valuable rentals are.

I was thinking Cody Ponce or even someone like Bubba Derby. I agree that I'd take Houser over Beeks. More upside there. Beeks just doesn't have the stuff to top out as anything more than a back of the rotation guy. He is a lefty, though, so he'll probably stick around awhile.

Anything more than the cost of a ticket to Boston is probably overpaying for Eovaldi... Has been decent this year, but he's just not come close to reaching his promise... maybe there's something in his peripherals or advanced stats that turned on Bill James...

Edit: Maybe an overreaction to another crappy performance by Drew Pomeranz...

Beeks is #15 in a system that isn't great. Profiles as a #5 starter/swing man. Already 25, so not a young prospect either.

Personally I thought the Rays would do better that this for Eovaldi. I saw him as one of the better rental starters on the market.

Fangraphs have him at #6. He's probably risen a bit in the rankings overall with a good 2018; 12+ K/9, 2.89 ERA.

Pretty good return for a not great rental. That he might be one of the better rentals on the market says more about the market really.
