McInerney and Mudcats Walk-Off Pelicans 6-5

The Mudcats walked-off the Pelicans for second time in three games on Wednesday

cut.JPG

Pat McInerney hasn't hit much at Carolina but he seems to be coming around a little bit. He had three straight games with a double within the past week and here he gets the winning hit. It wasn't cheap either. It was a rocket into the left field corner. Credit Phil Bickford and Alec Kenilvort for keeping the game close enough for the bats to come around. Victor Diaz with a rather mediocre outing. Weston Wilson and Cooper Hummel are near the top of the Carolina League in OPS for July. Another fine game for those two. Mario Feliciano's only hit was a blast to right center that scored the tying run in the 9th.

Victor Diaz: 4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K

Phil Bickford: 2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Alec Kenilvort: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Weston Wilson: 3-4, BB

Cooper Hummel: 2-4, 2B, BB

Ryan Aguilar: 1-2, 3 BB

Final: DSL Brewers 4, DSL Cubs2 3

The Cubs scored three runs in the first inning, but the Brewers' pitching staff kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the way as the Brewers edged the Cubs by a score of 4-3. Jose Alberro came on in relief of starter Leony Rosario and earned the win after tossing 3.2 hitless innings, striking out six. Wilber Diaz finished off the game with two scoreless innings to pick up the save. 17-year-old outfielder Alwinson Valdez homered for the third consecutive game while Larry Ernesto added a pair of doubles and Luis Silva chipped in two base hits.

Final: DSL Indians/Brewers 8, DSL Rays2 7

The Brewers' co-op team went to extra innings with the Rays before plating two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to walk off with an 8-7 victory. Reidy Mercado was on base three times, going 2-for-5 with a walk while Jose Arteaga and Elian Gonzalez each added a hit.

Here's the Carolina League standings. Winston-Salem already won the first half, so it's a matter of beating out Buies Creek in the second half.

I find myself rooting really hard for this team in terms of W-L.

Not exactly overflowing with top-ranked prospects, but a fun follow on a day-to-day basis. As the team's media notes remind us:

Have not made the playoffs since the 2008 season.

Have not made the playoffs during their Carolina League era (entered in 2012).

Wednesday's game videos:

Cooper Hummel RBI double

Mario Feliciano catch

I will never not be impressed with the amount of pitches switch-hitting DSL co-op team OF Bryan Dimas sees per at-bat. Just 18 years old in his second season, Dimas is from Panama. So he's at the Brewers academy, far from home, and I think of the kid, not just the stat line, and the fact the Brewers made an initial commitment to him and will see it out through at least two pro years of opportunity is pretty cool.

Check out the control/command improvement of LHP Jose Alberro since last year. Yay, coaching! Kid's been money all season.

Recent "2080" Scouting Reports --

Corey Ray

Lucas Erceg

Luis Ortiz

It would be very interesting to see what these reports would look like had the scout viewed these guys a month later. Mid June was when all 3 were really scuffling along...

Otherwise, apparently there is nobody in the southern league capable of playing at the mlb level as an everyday player.

Final: Jackson 3, Biloxi 0

Biloxi Box Score

Biloxi bats were silenced by the Jackson Generals staff on Wednesday. The Shuckers managed only four hits, two by Corey Ray, in a 3-0 lose. They struck out 12 times and didn't manage any walks.

The Shuckers pitchers did well enough to win, but some bad sloppy play (hit batsman, two errors, passed ball) lead to three runs on only one hit in the 5th inning.

Batting

Corey Ray: 2-4, 2B

Keston Hiura: 1-4

Gabriel Noriega: 1-3

Pitching

Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 3 hits, 3 ER, 1BB, 4K, Lose

Josh Uhen: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 0K

Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 3K

Notes

Biloxi remains in second place in the Southern League South Division, behind Pensacola.

SHUCKERS SHUTOUT IN JACKSON

Ray Notches League-Leading 28th Double In Defeat

Garrett Greene, Biloxi Shuckers

JACKSON, TN – A three-run bottom of the fifth inning was the difference on Wednesday night as the Jackson Generals (55-47, 16-17) topped the Biloxi Shuckers (60-42, 19-13) 3-0 at the Ballpark at Jackson.

RHP Joel Payamps (W, 9-3) kept the Biloxi bats in check, not allowing a base runner his first time through the lineup. The Shuckers put together a threat in the top of the fourth when Corey Ray doubled and Troy Stokes Jr. was hit by a pitch, but Payamps induced a 6-4-3 double play and a groundout that kept the Shuckers off the board. All told the righty hurled seven innings and allowed just two hits while striking out eight.

For Biloxi, LHP Kodi Medeiros (L, 7-5) faced some trouble in the first but got his own double play to strand a runner. He retired the next nine men in a row before issuing a walk in the fourth, his lone free pass of the night.

Jackson broke the deadlock in the fifth. Jose Vinicio was hit by a pitch, putting him on base for Payamps. The pitcher laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded on one hop by Lucas Erceg, who threw it to second to try and get Vinicio. The speedy shortstop beat the throw, and when Luis Aviles Jr. attempted to throw out Payamps at first, his toss sailed into the Shuckers dugout, sending Vinicio in to score the first run of the game. Ben DeLuzio followed with an RBI double, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Generals.

The Shuckers managed a leadoff base runner in the eighth on a single by Gabriel Noriega, but RHP Tommy Eveld (H, 1) coaxed a pair of fly outs and struck out Ray to end the frame. In the top of the ninth, Keston Hiura singled with one out against RHP Kevin Ginkel (S, 1). The righty struck out the next two batters to secure his first save of the season.

The two teams meet for game four of a five-game series at 6:05 PM on Thursday night. The Shuckers are scheduled to send RHP Thomas Jankins (9-5, 4.45) to the hill opposite Generals RHP Bo Takahashi (2-3, 6.02).

Chiefs Rally Past Rattlers

Wisconsin drops 7-5 decision at Peoria

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Included within Chris' details --

Wisconsin is 0-7 against the Chiefs at Dozer Park this season. If the three games against Kane County from April that were played in Peoria instead of Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium are included in Wisconsin's record in Peoria, the Rattlers are 0-10 in ten games at Dozer Park in 2018.

Tough to know how much to read into it prospect-wise, but the Australians are having pretty solid debuts.

Not sure that switch-hitting catcher Alex Hall is his listed 5'8" -- but his Australian Player Page list 173 cm so it checks out.

But yes, both he and Jess Williams are hardly overwhelmed stateside.

Final: AZL Brewers 9, AZL Reds 4

AZL Brewers Box Score

A somewhat rare offensive breakout for the Baby Brewers moves them to 1-1 in the AZL's second half. The 2 through 5 hitters in the lineup each had 2 hits, including a home run from Aussie catcher Alex Hall (his second on the year) and a triple from 2B Edwin Sano. SS Brice Turang (who made his first pro error and stole his 6th pro base), Aussie 3B Jess Williams, and DH Kekai Rios each had two singles. Turang, Rios, and Hall each drew a walk as well, and further down in the order, 1B Ernesto Martinez and RF Pablo Garabitos each walked twice.

Caden Lemons made his 4th start and once again pitched 3 innings, likely on a 45-50 pitch count limit. He allowed one earned run on 3 hits while striking out 3. Remember that Lemons is technically on rehab from the Wisconsin roster, so there's a chance we may yet see him with the Rattlers this year. Michele Vassalotti pitched 5 innings in relief of Lemons and gave up his first home run as a pro, but that was the only hit he gave up on Wednesday night.
