Sonny Gray and Brandon Drury

I don’t think there is any need to even discuss prospects in any deal with the Yankees. As Eye Black pointed out in another thread, the Yankees are loaded already and have a rule 5 crunch much like the Brewers. Any deal involving Gray and/or Drury is going to be for MLB players. The Yankees match up with the Brewers in that they could use a LH 1B. We have one of those who we are trying to play in RF. The question to me is, do you move Thames for a package involving Gray, Drury, etc?

No way.

This team can't afford to trade away one of their best 3-4 hitters.

I think with our OF depth that Thames could be expendable for sure.

The Yankees have Greg Bird as a LH 1B however.

They do but he really struggled last year and only shown slight improvement this year. Thames would be an upgrade.

I'd be interested in Gray, assuming his struggles result in a discount.

However I don't think the Yankees are seriously looking to trade him. They're looking for rotation help, but aren't seemingly keen on anyone out there right now. Trading away one of the starters they do have would just make things worse. Could perhaps be an option in the offseason, but would make less sense then.

With the Davies news and the likelihood that Nelson can’t be counted on, we do need a starter that can be expected to be a playoff caliber stopper.

Do any of those exist in this market? Outside of Degrom? I mean Happ is pretty good but there isn't much out there

I know that I probably am like a broken record with either Colorado Springs reminders or starting pitcher discussions, but unless we're willing to pay up for deGrom, our "playoff stopper" will be using our bullpen heavily. I don't know if there are really many pitchers that I'd have as a clear upgrade over a Guerra or Chacin on the market that aren't named deGrom, Thor, or the like.

Archer - 9 starts - 3.88 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 10.2 SO9 : Contract - 2019 ARB, 2020 UFA

Gray - 10 starts - 3.62 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 9.9 SO9 : Contract - 2019 7.5mil, 2020 8.25 mil (TO), 2021 8.25 mil (TO), 2020 UFA

You have that backwards. Archer has club options in '20 in '21. Gray is a FA after the '19 season.

Ortiz, Lutz, and Supak is a steep price for <1.5 years of Sonny Gray. I don't know that I'd trade Ortiz straight up for Gray.

This 100% and I'm lower on Ortiz than most. Lutz either he's a legit prospect that is gonna be a top 100 guy. That's something you don't give away for a decent starter that's 5'9 and having a pretty bad year. That deal would be an unmitigated disaster. We would be the laughing stock of the NL central if we made that deal. Last year fine this year yikes.

The Royals and Cardinals WS runs say it’s possible but I’d sure like to see 2017 Knebel before I follow that model.

I do need to point out that Peraltas innings limits will happen and we are actually starting Wade Miley now.

I love the Gray pick up because of DJ though I am not sure we match up well with NY since we don’t have anything we can spare that they would want.

Gray depends on the following:

1. The team has seen him pitch and feels that he can rebound to be an effective starter.

2. The price isn't terribly high. It's a year and a half of the guy, so this is not some long term, controllable asset. And he's not a top of the rotation asset. The price has to be reasonable. I'm thinking an Ortiz level player and maybe some change. The other guy that might interest them in Eric Thames. With Aguilar's emergence, Thames is being put into RF - which doesn't thrill me. Of course, that means more playing time for Phillips and Braun - or maybe the return of Santana.

I honestly have a hard time putting a price on Gray. The team MUST feel they can right his ship if they go after him. I don't want a reclamation project or a guy who has little chance of being a quality asset.

If the team believes he can be a good addition, he's worth something decent.

Unfortunately, the Yankees gave up a lot of Gray last year. I doubt they'll unload him just to unload him.
