Sonny Gray and Brandon Drury

Both players would be under team control beyond this year and both seem to be being shopped by the Yankees.

What would it take to get them as they both seem to be buy low candidates who the Yankees are trying to trade?

Gray has done well outside of Yankee stadium and Drury is a career .750+ ops guy who can play 2B (besides 3B and corner OF).

Drury doesn't really interest me at all. We certainly don't need him for 3B or OF, and he isn't even an upgrade over Villar at 2B. 3 years of control for him doesn't mean much when he could be a non-tender candidate the way he is going.

I'm a little more interested in Gray as a change of scenery guy, but I wouldn't give up much. Maybe a lottery ticket or two.

Drury is much better than what we have. He is only 25 while in his 4th big league season. Career .755 OPS and even higher when he played full time for the Dbacks.

Again, these could be inexpensive improvements to the club.

But he's not an improvement. He's less than a 1 WAR player for his entire career, while Villar is at 1.4 just for 2018. He's also having a terrible season, and recent history matters too. He's going to get more expensive after 2018 in arbitration and he's not worth it.

He's slashing. 180/.255/.280 this year. If he was doing that in Milwaukee, we'd be asking why he hasn't been optioned down yet, not when he's going to become the everyday second baseman.

That slash line is a VERY small sample size for this year. 17 games and just like 50 plate appearances with no consistent play time. He has spent most his time in AAA this year where he has a .848 OPS.

I agree with this. Johnson was his college pitching coach. If they Yanks are looking to move him, maybe he would be a relatively cheap acquisition.

Drury is a very slight upgrade over Hernan Perez. if the Yankees want to give away Drury I would grab him and release Perez. However, that upgrade is very very minor....

Perez (age 27): .255/.282/.386 in 1,466 career plate appearances

Drury (age 25): .267/.316/.439 in 1,095 career plate appearances

Drury may not be a world beater but he is a clear cut upgrade over Perez.

Gray is the guy that interests me but if we can get Drury for next to nothing, I would do it.

I think a reasonable trade to the Yankees would be Ortiz / Lutz / Supak for Gray

Oh man, no way. That would be handing a gift to the Yankees. That's the kind of package Gray would have fetched last year. Not this year.

They got a better package last year - #67, #98 and a top 10 system guy

It all depends on how you view Ortiz

I am not sure why people want to hand the yanks a great deal.

I'm not sure if I would give up Supak by himself for Gray. You're right ... no interest in helping the Yankees out. If they want out from under Gray and his contract, they aren't going to get a great return.

My guess is the Gray talk is mostly speculation, though. Tough to see the Yankees and Brewers matching up in a deal, unless they trade for a starter, and just want to be rid of Gray.

Yeah. I would not do anything close to Ortiz, Lutz and Supak that miloyd proposed.

I think of these guys as buy low candidates because I really don’t want the Brewers to burn any top prospects in other deals.

I'd rather not trade for a SP hoping a change of scenery will make him useful in the middle of a pennant race. And while Drury may be an improvement over some guys he's not enough of an improvement to give up anything for. Trading for both or even one of those guys just seems like making a move to make a move.

Lutz? The 19 year old in A ball that has been improving each month & has been on a year? Kid will be a centerpiece by time he hits AA. Not tossing him in for Gray

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

I would love to take a chance on Gray especially since we are now down a starter and we have no idea what Davies or Nelson are going to give us, if anything. I say this because Gray has a connection with Brewers pitching coach Derek Johnson. Gray has also been his usual self outside of Yankee stadium. If he can be had for cheap, I would def go get him and let Johnson get to work on him. There are not any good available SP options out there and the Brewers will need someone since Peralta most likely will hit a innings limit. Either they take a chance on someone who has been pitching this whole season or hope for the best with players coming back from injury.

Away Stats

Archer - 9 starts - 3.88 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 10.2 SO9 : Contract - 2019 ARB, 2020 UFA

Gray - 10 starts - 3.62 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 9.9 SO9 : Contract - 2019 7.5mil, 2020 8.25 mil (TO), 2021 8.25 mil (TO), 2020 UFA

I know everyone thinks Gray will be cheap, but you will still need to trade a higher tier Prospect and some nice pieces for him.

Thats why im saying

Gray - Ortiz / Lutz / Supak

Archer - Ortiz / Ray / Diplan

You have that backwards. Archer has club options in '20 in '21. Gray is a FA after the '19 season.

Ortiz, Lutz, and Supak is a steep price for <1.5 years of Sonny Gray. I don't know that I'd trade Ortiz straight up for Gray.

I don't think the Brewers can afford to take the risk on Gray for the remainder of the year (that's IF the Yankess are actually motivated to cut bait).

You're not replacing Guerra, Chacin, Peralta, Anderson, or even Miley in the rotation right now for Gray. Still have Woodruff as the next man up or Wilkerson in a pinch. MIGHT get Davies and/or Nelson to give you some useful innings in August or September. Once they get to August they have an off day every week until the end of the season. They will have the opportunity if needed to skip guys or rely more heavily on the bullpen like they did early in the season.

Taking on a semi reclamation project in August during the thick of a playoff race doesn't interest me. If they want to revisit it in the off season I would absolutely be up for it, but not right now.

As for Drury, I'm not interested in him when it comes to this season. Has a decent track record and an option so he would provide some roster flexibility, but I'd prefer Escobar, Dozier, or Cabrera at this point.

I don't understand the hype around Drury. The Yankees acquired him for nothing in a large trade and he's decent. Positional flexibility and an OK RH hitter and still somewhat young. I kept seeing the baseball writers talking about him as if he'd be a major piece in a trade for Britton or other player.

He came up young so maybe I'm just missing that he'll grow into more power or something?

I rarely do the "big market media bias" thing, but I have to wonder if the Yankees are just pumping some Drury hype into the media to boost his value because I really don't get it.

I get that Yankee Stadium is tough, but Archer should be at an advantage at the Trop.

In both cases I'd offer a lowball package (less than you have for both) and almost nothing for Gray. If they want to give them to me, I'll take them. Otherwise I'll just keep throwing less name-brand, yet equally successful pitchers like Junior Guerra and Jhoulys Chacin out there.

I don’t think there is any need to even discuss prospects in any deal with the Yankees. As Eye Black pointed out in another thread, the Yankees are loaded already and have a rule 5 crunch much like the Brewers. Any deal involving Gray and/or Drury is going to be for MLB players. The Yankees match up with the Brewers in that they could use a LH 1B. We have one of those who we are trying to play in RF. The question to me is, do you move Thames for a package involving Gray, Drury, etc?
