Texas vs. UNLV 02/12/05

Greetings all. The first weekend home series for the Longhorns and I was able to sneak away to attend the Sat. game. Friday's contest was a close 4-3 (Texas) and the Saturday pitching matchup featured Buck Cody for the Longhorns vs. Derek Rodriguez for the Runnin' Rebels.

The scoring started in the top of the first as Wisconsin's own Tyler Beranek drove in a run with a ground out to 2B. For those interested, here are a couple photos of Tyler. The first picture has him fishing for a breaking ball in the dirt and the other was before his last AB (a double play). They are here:

Texas then tied the game at 1 in the 3rd with a Carson Kainer double that scored Calvin Beamon.

UNLV wound up taking a 4 run lead in the 5th which started with a triple from UNLV's Zeke Zerega. This was a 'gift' ruling by the scorekeeper as this was a terribly played ball by 2006 super prospect Drew Stubbs. The ball was a line drive to the left-center gap and Stubbs first tried to catch it but realized he couldn't, so he pulled up. He then tried to play the ball to the side of his body and it skipped past him to the wall. Should have been a single and two base error. In this inning, Beranek also singled home a run, stole second but wound up stranded.

Texas closed the gap some on a monster, 2-run homerun by Seth Johnston, scoring Taylor Teagarden (who had walked) making it 5-3 UNLV.

UNLV tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-3.

The bottom of the ninth was where things came apart for the Runnin' Rebels. Drew Stubbs lead off the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman. He advanced to second on a WP, and then scored on a Johnston single (6-4 UNLV). Taylor Teagarden stepped up and delivered a huge 2 run HR to deep left to tie the game. After two more walks and a bunt single , Chance Wheeless stepped to the plate and ended the game with a line drive single to right. Impressive comeback for the Longhorns against the very game UNLV Rebels.

As for prospect watch. Buck Cody was not very impressive. There were several scouts there watching him (and others) but he struggled some with his command and did get hit hard.

Taylor Teagarden continues his impressive play. He went 3-3 (also with 2 walks) with the game tying home run. If he keeps this up, I expect he will rocket up the draft charts. He has gold glove potential behind the plate and is turning into a OBP machine. Last year he had almost as may walks as strikeouts (44/46) and is now batting .438 with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts so far this year. Small sample, but last year his numbers were hurt by a slow start to the year and then hit > .300 in the Big 12 conf.

Next week is Stanford so I hope to check out one of those games and their prospect laden lineup.

Yeah, thanks a lot Anders. I always enjoy the first-hand accounts. Looking forward to your Stanford observations.

If Teagarden keeps hitting, he is going to soar up the draft charts. Now there's a profound statement http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Thanks fellas. I do like Teagarden and feel his offensive potential has not been tapped yet. Hopefully he puts it all together this year. I haven't seen Clement yet, but USC, Nebraska, Rice, and Texas A&M are playing in the Round Rock Classic in my backyard in early March. Unfortunately I have a wedding to go to that weekend so I am fairly certain my wife isn't going to let me out for that one. That place will be jammed with scouts and will be some good baseball.
