Suter Has Torn UCL, Will Likely Need TJ Surgery

OnaBadger58

The 60 day DL is not available in the offseason is my understanding, so that is where the 40 man roster crunch is, and Suter is pretty likely to not be kept on the 40.

I learned something today. Thank you.

To paraphrase FauxPelini's graduation speech, "If you are wrong about something, change your mind and then you aren't wrong anymore."

Feel bad for the guy, but this doesn't really hurt the Brewers much. He's been pretty bad this year after a good 2017. Obviously, the injury likely factors into that.

He certainly shouldn't be on the 40 man at any point. No one is going to take him most likely and if they do, oh well.

I'd assume he'd go to the 60-day DL and open up a 40-man spot without being exposed to other teams.

Most likely he is non-tendered in the off season and resigned to a minor league deal.

But wouldn't he then be vulnerable to the Rule 5 draft? His past success as a solid starter AND his reputation as a good teammate would make him a near-certain pick-up.

A multi-year minor-league deal like that Jorge Ortega got would make some sense in the case of a serious roster crunch for 2019, but he would need to be re-added to the 40-man once he was ready to pitch.

He would have to be kept on the 25 man major league roster for a couple months before being DLed as a rule 5 pick (if he's even eligible with time in majors), right? I don't know who would keep a rehabbing player on their 25 man roster for a couple months. If he was the next Kershaw maybe, but then the brewers would keep him on the 40.

Brent Suter is a future Dave Duncan/Mike Maddux/Derek Johnson. There was a link in the minor-league forum to an article about Cam Roegner relating how Suter gave him some tips.

Even if he doesn't come back to pre-torn URL levels, this is someone the Crew ought to have long-term, like Tim Dillard.

Guys - Suter would not need to be kept on the 25 man while rehabing. He could easily be moved to the 60 man DL and rehab until he is ready for major league action & then would be on the 25 man for 90 days.

As an FYI, a few year ago Baltimore grabbed an injured Anthony Santander off the Cleveland roster & then maneuvered him between the 60 day DL, 40 man roster & regular DL for a year plus until he had his 90 days completed..

If another team is short pitching & likes what they saw from Suter, he would get taken... It up to Milwaukee if they want to risk it (or not)..

No, Suter is not on the 25 man roster.

If a team really liked Suter they would just claim him after he is DFA by the Brewers. No reason to wait for the rule 5 draft and deal with the restrictions.

When and why is he getting DFA'd? He'll be on the 60 day DL at some point for the rest of the year to not take up a 40 man spot. And if the Brewers want to or think they have any chance at keeping him they will simply non-tender and then resign him in the offseason. No reason to risk waivers or rule 5.

This is my thought as well. 60-day for the season, non-tendered and then offered a 2-year minor league contract with some out-date designed for once he would be healthy (so he's not stuck in the minors once healthy).

Well people are talking about the rule 5 draft, the Brewers can't just sign him to a minor league contract he has to go through the DFA process and everybody would have a shot at him.

If they non-tender him, he is a free agent and free to sign whatever type of contract he wants.

Yes, they can. If they non-tender him he is a free agent and free to sign whatever type of contract he wants.

The Rule 5 problem I referred to was after 2019. You have his past success, and depending on the schedule, some team needign rotation help may try to snap him up for $50,000.
