Former Brewer picks

Anyone notice any past Brewer draft picks that were selected this year. I know Jim (MassBrew) just posted about Hunter Pence who could have been a DFE player for us from the 2002 draft. Otherwise, any one else?

Of note, I didn't see Luke Cannon or Sheldon Catchot's names on the draft board at mlb.com.

I'm not sure if this is what biedergb meant, but Pence could have been a DFE candidate if he didn't transfer to Texas-Arlington. He spent his freshman season at Texarkana JC.

BTW, I haven't had a chance to check the entire draft list to see where some of our former picks, local players & some of my all around favorite fell to. I hope to catch up slowly but surely within the next few days. Unfortunately draft day also coincides with my busy season.

***Oh yeah, I believe I noticed that Ray Liotta also went in the 2nd round, to the White Sox IIRC.

Thanks Colby for defending me. I think I got confused. I remember his name in your piece previewing possible DFE at the end of the draft, but I guess he transferred before that became an option. Anyhoo, I overlooked Liotta.

If I get time, I'll try to cross-check some of these names.

Brewers' 2002 18th round pick Steven White (Baylor RHP) is listed as the Yankees' # 4 prospect as Baseball America kicks off its legendary team-by-team Top 10 & chat combos:

Q: Frankie from PinstripesPlus asks:

What is the ceiling for Steven White?

A: John Manuel: I think White can be a solid No. 3 starter, a 200-plus innings guy. He doesn't have a true strikeout pitch or else he'd have a higher ceiling, but I like him a lot as a prospect, especially if the improvement he showed on his breaking ball continues.

Whatever happened to Brewer's 2001 7th-round pick Taylor McCormack? McCormack appears to have been overdrafted by Jack Z. for a $175,000 signing bonus. According to player stats found on www.milb.com, McCormack spent all of his 3 pro seasons at the Rookie level Arizona League with very disappointing results.

Welcome aboard Awild, I am currently working on part 2 of my draft retrospect, and hope to get it to Brian by the end of the weekend, if not earlier.

McCormack was released in October of 2003 after those three lackluster seasons with the Arizona Brewers.

Yeah, the alumni roster in the Minor League forum is getting pretty unwieldy -- I've been promising to tighten that up forever now.

Regardless, we did mention last spring that McCormack, unquestionably one of the bigger disappointments in recent memory (how do you get drafted in the 7th round and not get out of low rookie ball?), played independent ball in 2004 in Long Island. His dad was the Duck's (great logo) manager.

Interesting blurb from BA's college weekend recap:

California's Garrett Bussiere popped a two-run homer off Loyola Marymount junior righthander Stephen Kahn over the weekend. It's an impressive feat given that Kahn went 7-3, 3.61 with 80 strikeouts in 87 innings in 2004, and earned a spot on the preseason All-America team thanks to his flashing a mid-90s fastball with Team USA last summer. But it's more impressive considering Kahn didn't yield a home run in 2004. Kahn allowed six runs--two earned-- on five hits in 4 2/3 innings and didn't figure in the decision in a 9-8 LMU win.
