Pablo Abreu is flying under the radar a bit, but he's more than held his own as an 18 year old in Helena so far (284/400/405). It is hard to tell too much from a few weeks' stats, but so far he's getting on base (15 BB and 20K in about 90 PA) and is six for six on SB, despite being one of the youngest players on the team. He signed for $800K in July 2016 (along with teammate Carmona, the youngest player by a few days), and the reports had him as a line drive bat with a good chance to stay in CF.

Weston Wilson at shortstop today. I wasn't expecting that! Nick Roscetti had a couple of errors there yesterday and Devin Hairston is out at the moment. So Wilson has played everything except centerfield and catcher.

Final: DSL Cardinals "Red" Squad 8, DSL Brewers 7, ten innings

Might as well see how the new extra-inning rule played out first -- Brewers scored one, but never recorded an out in the bottom half.

DSL Brewers Top of the 10th

Larry Ernesto starts inning at 2nd base.

With Andres Melendez batting, wild pitch by Sebastian Tabata, Larry Ernesto to 3rd.

Andres Melendez lines out to left fielder Joerlin De Los Santos.

Alberis Ferrer strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Sebastian Tabata. Larry Ernesto scores. Alberis Ferrer to 2nd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Francisco Gonzalez replaces Luis Silva.

Francisco Gonzalez pops out to third baseman Francisco Hernandez in foul territory.

Jeicor Cristian strikes out swinging.

DSL Cardinals Red Bottom of the 10th

Francisco Gonzalez remains in the game as the first baseman.

Defensive Substitution: Alwinson Valdez replaces right fielder Jeicor Cristian, batting 7th, playing right field.

Pitching Change: Leony Rosario replaces Wilber Diaz.

Luis Montano starts inning at 2nd base.

With Adanson Cruz batting, wild pitch by Leony Rosario, Luis Montano to 3rd.

Claudio Ramirez singles on a line drive to right fielder Alwinson Valdez. Luis Montano scores. Adanson Cruz to 3rd.

Leony Rosario intentionally walks Yowelfy Rosario. Claudio Ramirez to 2nd.

Jesus Orecchia singles on a line drive to left fielder Carlos Rodriguez. Adanson Cruz scores. Claudio Ramirez to 3rd. Yowelfy Rosario to 2nd.

Box Score / Game Log

There are four "Wilber's" in all of MiLB today. Two pitched for the Brewers in this game. Both Perez and Diaz have been very good, too, although Perez was victimized some here.

LH-hitting OF Oswel Leones is playing all his debut season at age 17, he had three hits here as the DH, and outside of slugging (such a common issue with the 17-year-olds), the Venezuelan has performed well. A double included in today's success.

Final: DSL Red Sox #2 Squad 5, DSL Brewers/Indians 1

Box Score / Game Log

Unique game in that all four pitchers here are Brewer farmhands. 19-year-old Panamanian rookie RHP Moises Ruiz surrendered all five runs (four earned) in his five-inning start.

Four Milwaukee batters combined to go 3-for-14 with two walks.

Final: Biloxi 4, Tennessee 1

Diplan Earns First Double-A Victory As Shuckers Make it Six In A Row

Grisham Homers for Second Time in as Many Games

By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers

cut.JPG

(Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Box Score

Marcos Diplan was good on Saturday, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. Diplan's only black mark was surrendering a solo HR in the 5th. Miguel Sanchez and Nate Griep would shut down the Smokies over the last seven outs to preserve the win.

Shucker bats were mostly quiet - but they were big when needed. Trent Grisham had a 2-run HR in the 2nd inning, while Jake Gatewood added a 2-run double in the 6th.

Batting

Jake Gatewood: 2-4, 2B

Trent Grisham: 1-3, HR

Pitching

Marcos Diplan: 6.2 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 5K, Win

Miguel Sanchez: 1.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 2BB, 2K

Nate Griep: 1.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Save

Notes

Nate Griep recorded his 25th save on the year. He leads the Southern League in saves by a wide margin (the next closest is 12).

Biloxi Game Log

Grisham's HR in the bottom of the 2nd gave the Shuckers a lead they would not relinquish.

Biloxi Bottom of the 2nd

Jake Gatewood grounds out, third baseman Jesse Hodges to first baseman Yasiel Balaguert.

Lucas Erceg singles on a line drive to right fielder Eddy Martinez.

Trent Grisham homers (4) on a fly ball to left field. Lucas Erceg scores.

Luis Aviles Jr. lines out to third baseman Jesse Hodges.

Max McDowell flies out to center fielder Wynton Bernard.

Final: Helena 8, Ogden 0

Ashby Dominates As Brewers Blank Ogden

Lefty Goes Career High Seven Innings & Allows Just 2 Hits

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Helena, MT - Looking for his first professional win, Aaron Ashby (W, 1-2) put on a show on Saturday evening at Kindrick Legion Field. The Brewers 2018 4th round selection threw seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one over the minimum to reach while only surrendering two hits. Helena's offense took advantage of mistakes from Ogden early, cruising to an 8-0 win over the Raptors. For Helena, it was their second shutout in 2018.

Click above for the rest of Greg's summary. In his 6th pro appearance, young Mr. Ashby formally had his "hello there!" moment. Wow, one of the top lines by a farmhand starter this year.

Box Score / Game Log

CF Pablo Abreu (see SoCal's note a few posts above) doubled twice and walked twice (bonus video, nice!)

LF Je'Von Ward singled twice and should have had a third hit.

SS Luis Avila also 2-for-4 - he's on his 3rd 2018 team (DSL, AZL, Helena), and it's nice to put a face to the name for another international signing now in Montana.

Rattlers Edge Hot Rods

Francis outduels Myers

I've watched it a few times, and the home plate call on the game's only run was a super close call for umpire Jennifer Pawol (2017 feature article). The final strike of the game may have been a bit of a gift, though.

Oh, and the HD quality video from Rattlers' games is just fantastic.

AUDIO via the Rattler Radio Blog: "On Saturday's Postgame Podcast, Chris Mehring & Kyle Lobner discuss the game, the pitching of Bowden Francis, the defense by the Rattlers, the catchers in this series, and the run that scored. Plus, hear clubhouse comments from Francis, Robbie Hitt, and pitching coach Steve Cline."

Box Score / Game Log

Third time in his last nine starts Bowden Francis has gone at least seven scoreless innings.

Payton Henry the only Rattler to reach base twice.

Final: AZL Athletics 11, AZL Brewers 5, completion of July 11th game

When the game was stopped on the 11th, it was the bottom of the 3rd, Brewers up 2-1.

E: Saint (2, fielding); Morales (1, throw); Martinez, E (1, fielding); Howell (2, throw); Williams, J (6, throw).

Four of the runs were unearned, but it was still a rough go for LHP Karlos Morales and especially undrafted RHP Renny Tolentino.

Box Score / Game Log

Two players were unavailable to resume from the 11th -- CF Joe Gray (out with pneumonia) and C Mike Alescio (now in Helena).

Only 18 years old, 9th round RF Arbert Cipion is now 4-for-45 with 24 K's. Hang in there, sir, better days ahead.

Final: AZL Brewers 6, AZL Athletics 3, regularly scheduled game (seven innings)

Box Score / Game Log

A-Crew moves to 11-15 on the season.

22-year-old 37th round RHP Franklin Hernandez, RHP Carlos Luna (coming back from two lost seasons to Tommy John), and RHP Jesus Brea combined nicely for the win.

Nice job, skip, (seriously, nice job) throw CF Arbert Cipion (see prior post) in the leadoff spot for a confidence boost perhaps, 0-for-3 with a K but did walk and score a run.

SS Brice Turang has now hit safely in all six of his pro games, and his double here was his first extra-base knock.

Click the link to see which four Brewers reached more than once, including three who reached three times apiece.

Santana's OBP with CS is now .436 (with a .500 SLG). I think we can bring him back to the majors.

The good Marcos Diplan showed up today. Interesting that Nick Ramirez started another game; I think I'd rather see Perrin return as a starter, but I'm not in charge.

Burnes, Peralta, Woodruff, Houser, Ortiz, Z. Brown, Medeiros, Diplan, Supak... we have an unprecedented number of starting pitching prospects in this organization right now. There should be no hand-wringing over trading one or two of them for the right piece that is under control for a couple of seasons to shore up SS, C, or 2B, as there will be plenty left over.

Final: Memphis 10, Colorado Springs 1

Wasn't it just Friday the Sky Sox 1-0 and the other affiliates couldn't retire anybody?

SKY SOX ROUTED 10-1 BY REDBIRDS SATURDAY NIGHT

Includes this:

Sky Sox pitching surrendered nine more walks Saturday night in Memphis. Just four nights ago, Sky Sox arms set a new high in walks this season with 11 total.

Domingo Santana with an opposite-field HR and two walks. He's close...

Box Score / Game Log

Let's just say newly-signed RHP Jeff Ames' 2nd Sky Sox outing did not go well:

Memphis Bottom of the 5th

Pitching Change: Jeff Ames replaces Nick Ramirez, batting 9th.

Tyler O'Neill walks.

Adolis Garcia doubles (16) on a fly ball to center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Tyler O'Neill scores.

Patrick Wisdom walks.

Carson Kelly walks. Adolis Garcia to 3rd. Patrick Wisdom to 2nd.

Oscar Mercado singles on a line drive to left fielder Rymer Liriano. Adolis Garcia scores. Patrick Wisdom to 3rd. Carson Kelly to 2nd.

Wilfredo Tovar walks. Patrick Wisdom scores. Carson Kelly to 3rd. Oscar Mercado to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Quintin Torres-Costa replaces Jeff Ames, batting 9th.

Jake Woodford called out on strikes.

Max Schrock out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Carson Kelly scores.

Rangel Ravelo grounds into a force out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to second baseman Andres Blanco. Wilfredo Tovar out at 2nd.

***

RHP Jorge Lopez has been scored for 13 hits in 3.2 innings since his latest option down. Have to believe his 40-man roster spot is getting a bit tenuous, or at least will be this fall.

Interesting that Nick Ramirez started another game

In one of the recently linked Rick Sweet audio interviews (I'm not the only one who listens, right? :)), Sweet indicated Ramirez' starting role is not part of a conversion plan for him, just a need based on roster make-up right now.

Lynchburg 6, Carolina 5

Bullpen Wastes Three Run Eighth Inning Lead in 6-5 Loss in Lynchburg

Pat McInerney went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI single in the loss

cut.JPG

Cam Roegner pitched a shutout for 5 innings but Jorge Ortega did not have a good debut with Carolina. Nattino Diplan ended up with the loss when he wild pitched in the winning run. Pat McInerney has now doubled in each of the last two games. This one hit the wall in the opposite field. The Mudcats had only Devin Hairston, who they didn't want to play due to a sore shoulder, and Mario Feliciano available on the bench. Mudcats hitters struck out 15 times in this game.

Cam Roegner: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Jorge Ortega: 2 2/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Nattino Diplan: 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Pat McInerney: 2-4, 2B
