Final: DSL Cardinals "Red" Squad 5, DSL Brewers 1

Box Score / Game Log

Brewer pitchers allowed 19 baserunners via hit or walk and there was also a wild pitch and an error thrown in for good measure, so surrendering just five runs seems like some sort of mini-victory for the 24-16 mini-Cerveceros, who turned three double plays to help the cause.

Nearly all the damage was to starter 20-year-old 3rd year pro and Venezuelan native Henry Medina, who had been wonderful in seven prior starts and still sports a 2.05 ERA after allowing 12 hits in 5.1 innings here.

17-year-old (not 18 until December!) stud (I'll say it, stud) CF Carlos Rodriguez used his left arm to rack up two OF assists to bring his season total to eight, and his LH bat to stroke three more singles to lift his line to .364/.395/.443. Listed at 5'10", 150, you know that frame and profile will fill nicely.

Only a double, single, and two walks from the rest of the lineup, with no one else reaching twice.

***

The two OF assists:

DSL Cardinals Red Top of the 3rd

Erik Pena singles on a ground ball to center fielder Carlos Rodriguez. Erik Pena out at 2nd, center fielder Carlos Rodriguez to shortstop Daniel Castillo.

DSL Cardinals Red Top of the 6th

Claudio Ramirez lines out to right fielder Alwinson Valdez.

Joyser Garcia doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Oswel Leones.

Pitching Change: Jose Alberro replaces Henry Medina.

Erik Pena strikes out swinging.

Joerlin De Los Santos singles on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Rodriguez. Joerlin De Los Santos out at 2nd on the throw, center fielder Carlos Rodriguez to catcher Jesus Chirinos to shortstop Daniel Castillo.

Final: DSL Red Sox #2 Squad 1, DSL Brewers/Indians 0

And it was in walkoff fashion:

DSL Red Sox2 Bottom of the 9th

Yulis Hernandez walks.

Andres Gari grounds into a force out, second baseman Moises De La Cruz to shortstop Elian Gonzalez. Yulis Hernandez out at 2nd. Andres Gari to 1st.

Ronaldo Pulgar grounds out, shortstop Elian Gonzalez to first baseman Rafael Brito. Andres Gari to 2nd.

Gabriel Quintero doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Marlin Made. Andres Gari scores.

Box Score / Game Log

This is a day after this shared squad hung on for a 14-13 win, of course.

Baseball, because well, baseball.

As noted above, birthday boy RHP Alexis Ramirez threw well, five scoreless. The following two pitchers were Cleveland property, and has been noted all season, the Indians pitchers on this co-op team are near universally bad, like putrid bad, although they surrendered just the one losing run here. (The full-blown DSL Indians team ERA is a respectable middle-of-the-DSL-pack 4.13. The co-op team is last in the league at 6.29, hardly the Brewers' fault. The full Brewers club is at 3.59, 14th in the 44-team league. Yup, 44 teams.

There were five Brewer position players in the lineup, and considering the final score, that's not a good thing.

Corey Ray still doing it all. HR #18 and 2 more steals brings him up to 30 on the season. 3/4 tonight.

Have the Brewers ever had a minor leaguer with a 30/30 season?

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

If he keeps hitting like he is, I can't imagine he'll be in AA all that much longer. May be even positioning himself for a September call-up. Who woulda thought that at this time last year?

It's nice to see Corey on one of his good streaks. Power, speed. If he can keep his batting average up, he could be really good. He's up to .257, which is okay, but nothing great. Still, it's good progress after his first two seasons.

48 of his 94 hits have been for extra bases. That's really, really good.

The MLB comparison in my mind this season has been Mets OF Brandon Nimmo. Beyond just their eerily similar statistical outputs (K%, BB%, BA, OPS) this season, Nimmo was also a highly touted prospect that experienced some significant peaks and valleys throughout his early development. He has now found some extra power to go with his solid speed and is on pace for a 3.5 WAR season.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I don’t remember any. Heck it looks like he will at least get to a 25/40 season.

Pretty sure Greg Vaughn did it once.

Nice call.

Vaughn hit 33 HR and stole 36 bases at Beloit as a 21-year old. It was his second pro season.

The guy was a beast that year. 33 HR, 105 RBI, 36 SB, 102 BB, .305 BA, 1,018 OPS.

He hit 28 HR and stole 22 bases the next year - his next closest to a 30/30 year.
