Question for the experts 2005 draft

I found on the SCOUT.com a senior writer for the Oakland A's predicts the Brew will take Cameron Maybin (HS CF) 6"4 200 lbs. He says the Brewers will be delighted if he's available at 5.

His top 5

--------------

Justin Upton (suprise suprise) http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Alex Gordon

Jeff Clement

Luke Hochevar

Cameron Maybin (BREW)

Any thoughts

By reading some of his comments it was clear that he was drawing some of his observations and comments from the scouting reports provided here at Brewerfan.net. For that I admire his insight http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

And if Maybin falls he definitely is going to be in the Brewers sights. They like high schoolers when it comes to the draft and they also like players with a lot of potential and exciting overall tools. Maybin fits that description more than any other player not named Upton, and there are some scouts out there that prefer Maybin's toolset to Upton's.

I'd rather go with a third basemen or catcher considering we have plenty of outfielders and prospects for the outfield. But I guess we go for the best available prospect regardless of position so if we take him I won't be disappointed. I'd rather get a good 3rd base prospect but hope we make the right decision. I guess that's why I'm not in Doug Melvin's shoes.

I agree with pohlman...although its hard to argue the best player available strategy, i am a little tired of drafting high school kids and waiting 5 years to see them make the show. i'd almost rather see them take a college kid with a little less talent that might be able to start in A instead of playing rookie then high rookie then A.

I don't know if i'm down with the "best available player" technique. I certainly don't like drafting by position when there's no clear choice at a slot. I'd like to see them take the best college player available, unless there's a REAL special HS player at their slot.

I have no problem with best available. While it would be great to take a C or 3B but if the scouting staff honestly thinks that a HS OF is the better pick over a college C or 3B then I'm fine with that. It won't disappoint me to see a need filled but I won't be heart broken if it is not. The drafting department under Jack Z has a pretty good track record so far and I'm inclined to trust them until proven wrong.

Come on guys...... The Brewers HAVE to take the Best Player Available with significant upside remaining. The draft is the only way to bring a stream of "future stars" to the Brewers. We can't afford to bring in big salaried MLB stars (see Carlos Lee) every year. Attanasio said yesterday on talking Brewers that 40 million is break even. Yes, if we start to contend or attendance approaches 3 million, that will change a little. But not a lot. Primarily, the only stars we will see are those we draft ourselves.

If the Brewers drafted college players at a position of need, we likely would only wind up with more Antone Williamsons. Hopefully the stars will align and the Brewers will get the best of both worlds this year. How would you feel if the Brewers passed up B.J. Upton for Bryan Bullington?? That would have been a Sal Bando move. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif

I too would rather take a 3B or a C, but I don't know if I would say we have "plenty" of outfielders. While I may not want to take some speed merchant that profiles as a leadoff hitter, similar to Dave Krynzel, I wouldn't pass on a potential big bat.

I'd like to see them take the best college player available, unless there's a REAL special HS player at their slot.

This year I too would like to see a college player selected, but Maybin could very well be the example of a real special HS player. He's that good.

And don't rule out a pitcher. While I lean towards a positional prospect, if needs are involved, our system definitely is deeper with hitters than it is with pitchers.

Trading prospects that you have for prospects of need is always hard to do. Sometimes you may be able to trade a big-league player away to address some immediate needs, such as the Royals did trading Beltran for Buck & Teahen, but as we even saw with the Sexson deal you can't always trade a proven MLB commodity for a position of need.

You just don't see many prospect for prospect trades, and I think the main reason is because it's harder to quantify their value. Plus, not too many teams have a surplus of catching or 3B prospects. The teams that do usually try to hold onto them. The Rockies are probably the one team that has some 3B depth with Atkins, Baker and Stewart, but unfortunately they're probably not the best trade partners since the Brewers and Rockies are really in the same boat. Who knows though, maybe they would bite on a Nelson, Hart or Cruz for Baker deal (Stewart isn't going anywhere).
