Arcia is hitting better in AAA now than he ever did before calling him up. I hope they keep him down until September/end of season to continue this. Then September he gets to come back & work his way back up. No need to rush him. Get everything figured out 1st. He is walking a good amount which is unheard of for him

Monte Harrison leads the Southern League with 159 Ks (40% K rate); next highest is Troy Stokes at 119 (29%). Only 32 BB for Harrison, making for a 4.84 K/BB rate. Oof.

Gatewood now leading the Southern League in HRs (Ray 3rd, Stokes 5th), but the 108:26 K:BB (30% K rate) - while not nearly as bad as Harrison - dampens the enthusiasm. Ray at 27% K's.

Erceg has a .974 OPS over his last 24 games. Dude is finding his stroke. For reference, he's only struck out 55 times on the year (on 30 BB, 15% K rate).

Conor Harber has only walked three in his last 18 innings vs. 12 K and 3 ER (1.50 ERA). Hopefully he's finding his location. He's been better as a starter than a reliever.

Final: Idaho Falls 12, Helena 7

Defense Collapses As Brewers Blow Lead Twice

Chukars Score Six In The Ninth As Helena Commits Five Errors

cut.jpg

Yeison Coca stops a Idaho Falls chopper near 2nd and catches the runner at 1st during Wednesday's game at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena, MT - After jumping out to a 6-0 lead, the Brewers appeared to be well on their way to a win on Thursday night over Idaho Falls. However, the Chukars tied it at six in the fifth, with the last four runs scoring being unearned. Helena retook the lead 7-6 in the eighth, but it all came apart in the ninth, as Idaho Falls put the first five on, scoring six in the inning to take a 12-7 lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Brewers are four games back of first place Great Falls with five games left in the first half.

It's a bit gory, but you should dive in to the rest the game summary at the link above.

Box Score / Game Log

E: Carmona (10, fielding); Coca (7, throw); Egnatuk (12, fielding); Connell (1, fielding); Sibrian (4, throw).

Game summary hinted at other lapses that didn't necessarily go down as errors.

Peter Strzelecki had been very, very good prior to allowing five hits to the only men he faced in the 9th.

My Cape Cod League "bud" Joey Matulovich will always get my recognition, especially after 3.1 scoreless innings.

19-year-old corner OF Bryan Connell made his stateside debut, 2-for-5, three K's.

David Fry, a senior college sign, doing what he should be doing vs. Pioneer League pitching in Pioneer League ballparks.

First baseman Chad McClanahan still on fire, on base four times, more on him in the next post.

Final: Round Rock 4, Colorado Springs 3

SKY SOX DROP FINAL GAME AGAINST ROUND ROCK TO SPLIT SERIES

Check out the full summary and related notes, which includes these two paragraphs from the summary with the names of several demoted big leaguers:

Colorado Springs answered in the bottom half of the fourth inning, tying up the game with a pair of runs. Orlando Arcia led off with a double, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Tyrone Taylor then grounded out, scoring Arcia in the process. Domingo Santana followed up the run with a single, moving up to third in the next at-bat on a Christian Bethancourt single. Jett Bandy then hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Santana from third, equalizing the game at two runs apiece.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sky Sox took their first lead of the contest. Arcia tripled for his second hit of the night to put the go-ahead run 90 feet from home. Two batters later, Santana hit a slow ground out, allowing Arcia to sprint home to give Colorado Springs a 3-2 lead.

Did you see this in the Transaction Thread?

AUDIO via the Sky Sox Soundcloud: The latest from Manager Rick Sweet

Do take in the entire podcast, but at the 04:25 minute mark, Voice of the Sky Sox Dan Karcher and Sweet go over two new signings by Milwaukee, corner IF/OF Richie Shaffer and former Brewers trade acquisition RF Rymer Liriano.

Sweet and Karcher do a nice job of noting Shaffer's 30 AAA International League HR's in 2017, as well as Liriano's lost 2016 season after a spring training beaning while with the Crew.

Both players are 27 years old, Shaffer the 25th overall pick of the rays in 2012, and Liriano a former Top 100 MLB prospect. Each has big league time, as you'll be able to review at their linked player pages above.

Not sure I get that Christian Bethancourt isn't currently in the big leagues "somewhere" -- three more hits here.

Final: DSL Tigers1 3, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

Three early runs were all the Tigers needed and three scattered singles were all the Brewers could muster as the team gets shut out for the third time this season. Starting pitcher Jose Romero gave up all the runs in 4.1 innings of work. Abner Uribe continued his impressive young pro career with 1.2 scoreless innings. 16-year-old Robert Ortiz made his pro debut and worked a clean 9th.

Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 14, DSL Pirates1 13

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

This was about as DSL as the DSL gets. The co-op team won despite losing the hit column 21-8. Of the 8 hits the offense managed, none were by Brewers, who went a combined 0-16 with 5 walks. Ouch. And only one Brewer pitcher was used - Ricardo Velasquez got the final out of the game, stranding the bases loaded after walking in the 13th Pirates run.

The complete list of ERAs from pitchers used in this game: 7.84, 6.75, 10.32, 15.09, 1.69 (Velasquez!), 3.21, 6.66, 5.68, 16.55, 13.50, 5.40.

DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log

Ricardo Velasquez (barely) saves the day:

DSL Pirates1 Bottom of the 9th

Yeison Ceballo strikes out swinging.

Final: AZL Dodgers 1, AZL Brewers 0

AZL Brewers Box Score

Like their DSL counterparts, the AZL club gets shutout on 3 hits. Jess Williams managed the only XBH for the Brewers, a 4th inning triple. He was subsequently erased from the basepaths at home whilst trying to score after tagging up on a flyball. Brice Turang reached third base as well in the first inning after a single, steal of 2nd, and advance on a groundout, but he would be stranded there to end the inning.

Caden Lemons and Michele Vassalotti held the Dodgers hitless into the 7th inning. Lemons worked a career-high 3 innings, while Vassalotti's 4 scoreless lowered his season ERA to 0.43 and career ERA to 1.21. Recently signed indy baller Logan Gillaspie made his pro debut in the 9th and allowed a walk while also striking out one.

AZL Brewers Game Log

The lone run of the game scored on a Luis Avalo passed ball. So it goes:

AZL Dodgers Top of the 8th

Pitching Change: Renny Tolentino replaces Michele Vassalotti.

Albert Suarez flies out to left fielder Arbert Cipion.

Jon Littell triples (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Pablo Garabitos.

Rolando Lebron strikes out swinging.

With Kenneth Betancourt batting, passed ball by Luis Avalo, Jon Littell scores.

Kenneth Betancourt strikes out swinging.

Gatewood now leading the Southern League in HRs (Ray 3rd, Stokes 5th), but the 108:26 K:BB (30% K rate) - while not nearly as bad as Harrison - dampens the enthusiasm. Ray at 27% K's.

Ray has gone yard in game two. Now tied with Gatewood with 17 HRs.

And now Gatewood has hit an HR. Back in the league lead with 18.

Is Gatewood's move to 1B permanent? I know he came up as a SS, wondering if he could be moved to 3B or outfield if need be. Just seems like he may have more positional value at other positions than 1B.
