2018 plan for Arcia and Santana

statman0007
I have a wild theory about Arcia's offensive struggles this year. I'm thinking he's a guy that tries to emulate other guys and he's tried at times this year to emulate Cain who isn't necessarily a great guy for him to copy. I don't have any inside info, but he was fine last year before Cain, and he's been good so far at AAA when he's not watching Cain hit 5 times a night.

Josh I’m just curious why you ended up deciding Cain was the guy he is trying to copy...seems random without any kind of explanation as to why.

He most closely mirrors Junior Guerra or Chase Anderson.

If he could get a .350 OBP and keep a .400 + SLG, and play his usual defense, I'd be thrilled.

This is the kind of seasonal stat line I think makes for a reasonable expectation from Arcia:

155 G, 550 AB, 75 R, 152 H, 25 2B, 5 3B, 15 HR, 60 RBI, 15 SB, 62 BB. .276 AVG, .350 OBP/.416 SLG/.766 OPS.

That reminds me of a song from the Man of La Mancha which (I'll spare you my singing voice):

To dream the impossible dream

To fight the unbeatable foe

To bear with unbearable sorrow

To run where the brave dare not go

If he had built on 2017 in any way, I would guess that you might have the above expectations, but his approach this year has been abysmal and I didn't see anything in his contact rate/approach that he could ever get to an OBP of .350, but we can dream....

I think this is all down to Darnell Coles and I don't call him out for every offensive lapse, so bear with me. Every telecast I watched before Arcia was sent down they mentioned that Coles was working on Arcia because of his struggles and invariably during the same plate appearance they would show Coles in the dugout with a clipboard... Throughout the entire focus on Arcia by Coles, he got WORSE, not better, so whatever Coles was noting on that clipboard is all the evidence I need that Coles is not the right man for the job. I believe it was mentioned that they wanted to take some of the movement out of his stance... If that was the idea that they could build on 2017 then they FAILED miserably with that approach... Coles needs to go...

Until I see reports that Orlando has actually made changes to his approach I could care less about his AAA stats. He needs to stay down until he's learned how to have a major league at bat. His glove would be nice to have back but his bat would just continue to hold back what is already a rather crappy offense.

Anyone else noticed some weird splits for Arcia in AAA. 6 BB and 2 K in 41 home PA, 4 BB and 12 K in 44 road PA. Probably a small sample thing, but still very odd. I don't know why Colorado Springs would impact those ratios so much...

I agree that it's likely just a small sample thing, but the altitude does affect the break on pitches. Could have something to do with it.

I would think that is a small sample and/or a more road games when he first got sent down than recently thing. Regardless, 10 BB in 85 PA is a very encouraging sign that he has changes his approach and is having "major league" at bats. I think I'd keep him down at least another week though before letting myself be convinced that he's figured things out.

He's also crushing RHP (.988 OPS). Though I think he's always hit RHP better.... or struggled with LHP, however you want to look at it.

Regardless, he's hitting so bring him up, that glove is a difference maker.

Unfortunately it is impossible to know with CS and the PCL if it would truly translate.

I just spent several weeks debating how much 2 years worth of inflated Nate Orf stats meant to pro numbers, and while his sample is extremely small in the majors, it would appear that one does not carry over that .400+ BABIP from CS/PCL to the majors very easily.

The walks are encouraging, I will say that.

Let Arcia get completely right before we bring him back. Doesn't do us any good if we rush him back before he has fixed what was wrong.

Of course he is hitting in CS.

The whole break on pitches thing. I'd bet he's still swinging at sliders that would normally break into the dirt, but is getting a piece because they aren't moving. Arcia has 2 xbh, 12 k, 4 bb in 44 AB on the road, I personally don't care at all about the home numbers. It's definitely better than he was, especially the BB numbers. That said, I don't think he's quite ready yet.
