If they miss out on Machado

My plan:

1. Call up Keston Hiura as the full-time 2B. Instant, no-cost upgrade. The bat's been superb. DFA Kratz and Miley

2. Trade Barnes and Ortiz to Miami for Starlin Castro, LHP Dylan Lee, and international bonus slots.

Lineup:

cf: Cain

lf: Yelich

1b: Aguilar

3b: Shaw

rf: Braun/Thames

ss: Castro

2b: Hiura

c: Pina

bench: Nottingham/Pina, Thames/Braun, Perez, Villar, Saladino

rotation: Anderson, Guerra, Chacin, Suter, Peralta

bullpen: Knebel, Hader, Jeffress, Jennings, T. Williams, Woodruff, Burnes

Shuttle: Wilkerson, Phillips, Orf, Lopez, Houser

Castro hasn't played SS in almost 4 years. He was an average defender back when he played it. I can't imagine he'd be any better than throwing Brad Miller out there consistently. What's the point, then?

I agree. That looks like the definition of making a move just to make a move.

Add in Hiura's less-than-stellar 2B defense. Hiura as your 2B makes sense when you have Arcia's Gold Glove-caliber defense at SS, but not when you are pairing him with a guy who hasn't played SS in 4 years, and wasn't great at it when he did it regularly.

CC can not function on a strict platoon. Always trying to be cute with something else. Plus, Villar is in the dog house, and can't seem to get any established playing time.

Well, maybe that's because he's already in the platoon (when not on the DL).

Villar has an .892 OPS against lefties this year. He didn't take advantage in some of the 2 week runs where he got consistent time against RHP. Villar has a .760 career OPS vs. LHP.

Miller is also a .760 guy against RHP.

There have been plenty of times this season, facing a lefty, that Villar has been benched. I just don't believe that CC can be counted on to use a strict platoon when it comes to Villar. Not as long as he has Perez and Sogard types that he MUST play.

I was originally on team Escobar, but he's cooled off significantly while Dozier has been heating up quite a bit over the past few weeks. It's easy as a fan to get swayed by recency bias, but Dozier has a very good track record.

Post ASG stats for Dozier:

2017: 158 wRC+, 330 PA, 304/394/591, 21! homers.

2016: 155 wRC+, 332 PA, 291/344/646, 28! homers

Dozier would be a very nice add. I cant imagine he would cost near as much as Machado but he would still requite a decent prospect. If going after Dozier allowed them to have the ammo to go after a catcher or starting pitcher than I would really be all for it. Although personally I would rather see Burnes and Woodruff get a chance to start games over trading for a middle of the road starter

Honestly, I don't think they do much. If they were not going to pony up for Machado (or one of top FA pitchers in the off season) then they won't pay the price for lesser rentals like Dozier. If the right deal comes along for a controllable piece then they may pull the trigger on a bigger deal. I mean, we know the MO by now. Stearns is going to set his value and he won't give in (which isn't a bad thing). I see some marginal upgrades like last year but not much more than that. Machado was the big swing.

What other teams have a need at 2B? I know that the Dodgers were looking at Dozier but if they get Machado you can cross them off the list of suitors.

Red Sox, Nationals, Indians.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

If Cleveland wanted to move on from Kipnis (who has finally started to perform again), they would have natural 2B Jose Ramirez move across the diamond and go with a different 3B (Yandy Diaz, trade for Beltre, etc..)

If I’m the Reds, I’m not selling. Go get yourself some pitching in the offseason and go after the division.

Many Tribe fans think that the Reds might deal R Iglesias... I don't think the Reds are ready to deal him unless they get double the value.

I agree with you, if the Reds can get some more pitching in the offseason they can make some noise in the division NL Central in 2019 & 2020..

can we change the title of this thread to Welp, We missed out on Machado.

And I think we NEED to make some moves now... like, soon. There is WAY too much negative mojo. We need some jump here. Just not sure what is even really truly available at this point. With the Twins making a run in a week division.....

Agreed. So much went wrong for Milwaukee and the mojo yesterday. Segura and Scooter playing great, the Hader mess and of course missing out on Machado and getting to play him coming off the losing streak.

This feels very free fall ready. They need to shake up the narrative.

I've never been a proponent of making a move just to make a move, but I pretty much agree with you here. This team has to find something positive and exciting quickly. This first week back from the break is going to be a strong test of the team's fortitude.

Call up Arcia and Santana and let’s swing our way outta this mess. They’re both doing well in AAA.

Honestly, I think this is where I am at as well. I would like to see this happen plus trade for Dozier for the lineup and ride it out with these guys. Keep a consistent lineup of Cain-Yelich-Aguilar-Shaw-Dozier 1-5 and some combination of Thames, Braun, Santana, Arcia, Saladino, Pina and Nottingham 6-8.

My focus has been and will remain on acquiring TOR SP be it deGrom or Syndergaard. If the price is right, I wouldn't mind mining the next tier of Archer, Stroman, etc...

I know this comes up time and time again - and for the record, I'm one that thinks that Santana and Arcia are good enough hitters no matter what and I'd be fine with it...but...Colorado Springs/PCL.
