Mudcats End Three Game Skid With 3-2 Home Win

Demi Orimoloye went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Mudcats defeated the Hillcats 3-2

cut.JPG

A quality start by Conor Harber, who went six innings, and shutout relief by Nattino Diplan and Luke Barker led to the Mudcat victory. Barker now has 45 strikeouts versus only 9 walks and has posted a WHIP of 0.87 after having a 1.20 at Wisconsin last year. The winning run came on a sacrifice pop-up by Ryan Aguilar. The fly was only around 10 paces past the infield but the centerfielder was so surprised that Dallas Carroll would run on it that he double clutched and then threw home wildly. Former Brewer Dan Plesac's nephew was the starter for Lynchburg in case you were wondering.

Conor Harber: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K

Nattino Diplan: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Win

Luke Barker: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, Save

The Shuckers' game story hasn't posted online yet, but we have it for you here:

EARLY RUNS TOO MUCH FOR SHUCKERS IN JACKSONVILLE

Gatewood Launches 16th Homer In Loss

Garrett Greene, Biloxi Shuckers

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Seven runs in the first four innings by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (38-53, 10-13) was too much for the Biloxi Shuckers (52-40, 11-11) to overcome in a 7-4 defeat on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Jake Gatewood connected for his 16th homer of the season in the game, tying him with Corey Ray for the Southern League lead.

Former Brewers farmhand Isan Diaz put the Jumbo Shrimp on the board in the first with a two-run homer to right, his tenth of the season and third in as many days, giving Jacksonville a 2-0 lead. Brian Schales doubled in a run in the second off RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 0-1) before a sacrifice fly plated another run for the Jumbo Shrimp, extending their lead to 4-0.

Diplan helped his own cause in the top of the fourth. Lucas Erceg started the frame with a single and stole second before Trent Grisham sent Erceg home with a single down the right field line. Max McDowell reached on a fielding error by Joe Dunand, bringing up Diplan. In just his fourth professional plate appearance, the righty shot a frozen rope over the head of the left fielder Lee, driving in both runners with a double, his first professional hit.

Jacksonville chased the Shuckers starter with a pair of walks and two singles in the bottom of the fourth. Facing RHP Cody Ponce, Diaz bounced a single inside of the bag at first, scoring two more to widen the Jumbo Shrimp lead back to four runs at 7-3.

Gatewood scored the final run of the game for the Shuckers with his opposite field homer in the top of the fifth off RHP Jordan Yamamoto (W, 1-0). It was Gatewood’s second straight game with a homer.

RHP Kolton Mahoney (H, 3), an unsigned Brewers draft pick (23rd round, 2014), tossed three innings of relief for the Jumbo Shrimp, not allowing a run on three hits, and LHP Dylan Lee locked down his third save, striking out three while giving up a single in the ninth.

Game four of the Shuckers five-game series in Jacksonville gets going on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM CT. All-Star RHP Zack Brown (8-0, 2.47) gets the start for Biloxi against Jumbo Shrimp RHP Robert Dugger (2-2, 5.65).

Final: Colorado Springs 11, New Orleans 8

SKY SOX SCORE NINE LATE RUNS TO TAKE SERIES LEAD

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Sky Sox rallied late on Saturday night to score nine runs in the final three innings of play to take an 11-8 victory over New Orleans and a 2-1 series lead over the Baby Cakes.

For the third time this series, the Sky Sox were the first to score Saturday night, putting up the first run of the game in the second inning. After drawing naught but a walk in the first inning, the Sky Sox collected a pair of hits in the second frame. Jett Bandy first hit a one-out single, scoring one batter later on a Shane Opitz RBI double to give Colorado Springs the first lead of the evening.

New Orleans took their first lead of the evening in the bottom of the fourth, and would not relinquish it again until the eighth inning. Eric Campbell led off the fourth with a walk, advancing to second on a Jonathan Rodriguez single. Two outs later, both runners moved up on a wild pitch from Colorado Springs' starter Bubba Derby. Austin Nola then drew a walk to load the bases, and with two outs on the board Peter Mooney hit a bases-clearing double to give the Baby Cakes a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, Brett Phillips reduced the Cakes lead to just one run when he lined his second solo homer in as many nights to make it a 3-2 ballgame. The last Sky Sox batter to hit home runs in consecutive games was Tyrone Taylor on July 3rd and 4th against the Round Rock Express on the 3rd and the Baby Cakes on the 4th. Taylor hit a two-out single after Phillips' home run, but then was thrown out trying to steal second to end the top half of the fifth and send it to the bottom.

The Baby Cakes led off with a pair of hits in the bottom half of the fifth. Austin Dean hit a double off the center field wall, and Magneuris Sierra laid down a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Campbell then drew a walk, with another wild pitch from Derby on ball four allowing Dean to score to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Derby was then replaced on the mound by Miguel Sanchez, who was making his Triple-A debut. Sanchez recorded a strikeout and a fly out, but then threw a wild pitch that allowed the speedy Sierra to score to make it a 5-2 game.

In the top of the seventh, with one out in the inning, Jake Hager reached on New Orleans' first error of the evening. Dylan Moore then came into the game to pinch-hit in Sanchez's spot, reaching on a fielder's choice that saw both him and Hager safe. Phillips then flew out to move Hager up to third, and Orlando Arcia walked to load the bases. Taylor then hit a single to score both Hager and Moore to make it 5-4. Domingo Santana then drew a walk, but Christian Bethancourt struck out swinging to end the inning and the rally.

In the top of the next inning, with two outs already on the board, Hager hit his first AAA home run of the season and 11th overall to tie the game at 5-5. Moore and Phillips then drew back-to-back walks, before Arcia hit an RBI single to plate Moore and retake the lead for Colorado Springs. Quintin Berry then came into the game to pinch-hit, hitting a double to clear the bases and extend the Sky Sox lead to 8-5.

The home squad responded right away in the bottom of the eighth. Isaac Galloway led off with a walk, with Campbell being hit-by-pitch to put two on. Rodriguez then reached on the Sky Sox first error of the night to load the bases for J.B. Shuck, who grounded into a force out that saw Rodriguez out at second and Galloway safe at home to make it 8-6. Rafael Ortega then walked to load the bases again for Nola, who singled to score Campbell and Shuck to tie the game at 8-8.

On the very first pitch of the ninth inning, Bethancourt hit his 13th homer of the season to retake the lead for Colorado Springs. Opitz and Hager then hit back-to-back singles, with Moore grounding out for the second out of the inning to advance both runners into scoring position. Phillips then hit an RBI double in the gap to score both and make it 11-8 Sky Sox. Arcia was then intentionally walked to bring up the pitcher's spot in the lineup, with Andres Blanco stepping in to pinch-hit with two out and two on. Blanco flew out, however, to end the half-inning and send it to the bottom of the ninth with the Baby Cakes trailing by three.

The Baby Cakes would go three up and three down to end the game in the bottom of the ninth, with the Sky Sox taking a 2-1 series advantage over New Orleans with the Saturday night win.

Sunday's Preview: In the final game of this four-game series against the Baby Cakes in New Orleans, the Sky Sox are sending a yet-to-be-announced pitcher to the mound to face off against New Orleans' righty Odrisamer Despaigne, who is searching for his third win of the season.

Roster Moves: With Miguel Sanchez making his Triple-A debut with the Sky Sox in the fifth inning Saturday night (even though he was called up earlier this season but did not make an appearance), Sanchez became the 54th player to play for the Sky Sox this season (27 position players, 27 pitchers).

Here's the breakdown of players used each season during the Brewers affiliation (since 2015):

2015 - 22 position players, 30 pitchers (52 total)

2016 - 27 position players, 30 pitchers (57 total)

2017 - 24 position players, 31 pitchers (55 total during regular season) [27 position players, 32 pitchers (4 additional in 2017 postseason, 59 grand total)]

2018 - Through 7/14 - 27 position players, 27 pitchers (54 total). The most Sky Sox players that appeared in a game in one season happened during the 2005 season (during Colorado Rockies affiliation), when 67 players were used that season (34 position players, 33 pitchers). There were four additional position players that were called up to the Sky Sox that 2005 season. However, those four players did not appear in a game.) In comparison, the fewest players used in a season for the Sky Sox was only 41 players used, done twice (during Rockies affiliation). In 1994, only 21 position players and 20 pitchers were used, and in 1998, only 20 position players and 21 pitchers were used. In 1992, during Cleveland Indians affiliation, there were only 40 players used in the regular season (22 position players, 18 pitchers), with three additional players used in the postseason, raising the total to 43 grand total (24 position players, 19 pitchers).

Walk This Way: here were 17 total walks in Saturday night's contest between the Baby Cakes and the Sky Sox, with the Sky Sox issuing 10 and the Baby Cakes allowing seven free passes. The last time the Sky Sox issued at least 10 walks in a game and still won the game took place last year on May 16th, 2017 in El Paso, when the Sky Sox issued 11 walks and still beat the Chihuahuas, 15-11.

Barker has a devastating changeup. The low walk totals suggest he can command his pitches fairly well. Unfortunately he got a late start in pro ball.

Not sure what to make of Conor Harber - high walk rate, but .600 OPS-A and this year better as a starter than a reliever (.552 OPS-A as a starter, .655 OPS-A as a reliever, similar number of PAs for each). Abnormally low BABIP as a starter, and lower K rate as a starter.

Final: Idaho Falls 6, Helena 4

Raptors Rattle Brewers With Five Run Eighth

Ogden Turns Three Run Deficit Into Two Run Lead

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Ogden, UT - Rarely have the Brewers in 2018 allowed a big inning late in a tight ballgame. Yet against the league's highest scoring offense on a hot Saturday night, Helena took a knockout punch, as the Ogden Raptors plated five runs in the eighth, turning a 6-3 Brewers lead into a 8-6 Raptors advantage. Ogden won by that final, putting the Brewers a season worst three games back of first place Great Falls with just nine games left in the first half.

Helena's offense came out swinging early as David Fry and Je'Von Ward hit solo home runs in the second inning, giving the Brewers the early two run advantage. Brewers starter Scott Sunitsch struck out the side in order in the first, but then allowed a run to score on a one out single from Drew Avans in the bottom of the second. Sunitsch stranded the bases loaded in that frame with no further damage, and held the Raptors in check in the third and the fourth innings.

For the second straight night, a four run inning gave the Brewers a big lead, as with two on and two out in the fifth, Eddie Silva doubled home a pair, extending the advantage to 4-1. The next batter was LG Castillo, who smoked a ball over the left field wall for his second homer, making it 6-1 Helena.

Ogden though responded in the bottom of the frame, as a leadoff walk to Ronny Brito scored on a one out double from Miguel Vargas, ending the night for Sunitsch. Aaron Ashby (L, 0-2) then surrendered a single to Avans that cut the lead to 6-3, but then got the next two to keep it a three run advantage after five.

From there, Ogden's bullpen held the Brewers at bay, and the score remained 6-3 going into the bottom of the eighth. With Ashby still on the mound, he issued a one out walk to James Outman. Chris Roller then turned on an inside pitch and sent it off the scoreboard for his second homer, cutting the lead to one. Niko Hulsizer then whacked a pinch hit single to center, and Daniel Robinson followed with a single to left.

That set up Jacob Amaya, who took an outside fastball and parked it in the right center field gap for a triple, scoring both easily to give Ogden their first lead of the night. The infield came in for Ronny Brito, who singled up the gut, plating the Raptors an insurance run. Hunter Speer (W, 1-0) pitched the eighth and the ninth, earning the win while facing just one over the minimum.

The Brewers look to even the series tomorrow as Max Lazar takes the hill, opposed by Joel Inoa. First pitch is at 4:00, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 3:45.

Final: AZL Brewers 6, AZL D-backs 4

AZL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers get back to .500 as the top of the lineup featured Micah Bello (1-3, 2 BB), Brice Turang (1-4, BB, SB), and Joe Gray (1-4) all playing together for the first time. Rehabbing Mario Felciiano (2-3, 2B, BB) played behind the plate for the second day in a row, which would seem to indicate he'll be returning to Carolina shortly.

37th round RHP Franklin Hernandez, one of my favorites from this past draft, made his first pro start after three relief appearances. He worked 2.2 scoreless frames.
