2018-07-14, Game #2: Brewers (Suter) at Pirates (Holmes) 3:05 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 6-2]

Eye Black
I'm not sure getting swept in a 5 game series is going to make a very convincing argument to Stearns to pursue Machado. For one thing Stearns isn't very prone to make a panic move in desperation and for another Stearns is probably going to think even harder about giving up significant prospects for a rental if he thinks that a play-in wild card game is the most likely best case scenario.

Machado is being acquired to help win Game 5 and not get swept.

Also if Stearns isn’t prone to panic moves getting swept in 5 Games should effect nothing. Deciding not to get Machado because of a 5 game losing streak would be a panic move.

I was mostly joking though.

I agree with this. Admittedly I thought the starting pitching would tank early. I was wrong, it took them until mid-way through for the short comings to catch up to them. The offensive uptick that was to portend a better offense never materialized because of regression and injuries with other players. The bullpen was definitely improved but not to the point where it could overcome the shortcomings of the rest of the team.

:laughing

The funny thing is part of CC's defense is that he can't pitch 90 games. He's on pace to pitch only 51. And when he does finally get an appearence to CC's liking he'll get hit around pretty good due to rusting away in the bullpen.

Starting pitching is still far from this teams biggest weakness...they are not a good offensive club

I agree. To clarify my point, the addition of two all-stars was supposed to fix what ailed this lineup, it hasn't. Now folks want to use more assets to acquire yet another all-star to take another stab at "fixing" the offense. How many all-stars are we going to need to acquire before the offense is actually good? Even if they could do that, the pitching still wouldn't be good enough and we are seeing that now. Do we deploy even more assets to fix the pitching as well? We obviously don't have the assets to do that which begs the question, why make any significant moves at that point? Starting pitching may not be our biggest weakness, but it is a weakness.

Maybe they're throwing this series to get Stearns to bring in Machado

This team picking up Machado would be the stupidest move ever. Why compromise the future for a two month rental for a team that needs so much more than one hitter?

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

How many times has Aguilar struck out since he was named to the All-Star game?

How many positive posts in the last year have you had?

Aguilar has been brutal lately though.

The All Star hoopla and the burden of trying to carry the offense singlehandedly seems to be taking its toll.

Well eventually he is going to regress. He isn’t a .300 hitter and his HR rate is bonkers for him. Will be interesting to see where he ends up long term.

That is a legit question if you ask me.

Since he has become an all-star, I think he may be pressing.

He has looked dreadful in numerous plate appearances since that time.

I'd be very okay if I never have to watch Hernan Perez start another game...

I have no idea why Counsell has a love affair for the guy...

His true love, Sogard, is gone. His current love, Perez, is still here, so better get used to seeing him in the line-up on a daily basis.

Getting swept in 5 games by the pirates and losing 2-3 to the Marlins has to effect the way DS will approach the deadline. I not sure but something is needed for this team A trade ? a Coach being fired? or a rest for these tired ballplayers. Now its time for the guys to step up or will this be a free fall imo. the last week has really showed holes in this team Hitting issues a tired Bullpen starters not going late into games

This is why I think the guy in charge of hitting needs to be held at least partially culpable at some point. We made significant changes in the offseason intended to fix this offense, and we're still sitting at square one.

Yes, this offense has weaknesses but going out and either trading for or spending 16M a year on a stud for every position isn't realistic. Coles has run his course.
