Fortnite

Anyone else get addicted to this?

My kids play it constantly. When Jeffress talked about it being popular with players I tried it. I am TERRIBLE, but can’t stop playing.

I have an impossible time aiming using the PS4 controller. I know a lot of people hook a mouse and keyboard to their game system which would make point and click shooting much easier than aiming with joystick. I don’t care that much to get that into it, but really like playing a free game.

It's a scourge of humanity. Perhaps the single most addicting game ever released. My kid plays it. We limit his time, everyday, but it is a battle everyday to keep him off it and when we enforce the time limits we are "the only parents that do that!". Every parent I know of a teenage or preteen son is dealing with this problem.

It's the middle of summer. We live in a relatively large community for Wisconsin. Go drive around in the middle of the day. Not a single kid playing outside. Not. A. Single. One.

There are worse things kids could be doing than playing a video game. It is cheaper or can be cheaper than playing airsoft or paintball.

If your kid likes playing that game have them try paintball or airsoft instead. Paintball and airsoft can be rather expensive but are incredibly fun to play.

I play it nightly. I'm a full grown adult. I don't think it's so much the game that drags me in as it is the comradery of playing with three other friends. It's a very team work oriented game and is a blast when you have a full team of friends. It's also free, so that is nice. And unlike most games on the market it is constantly being updated and is very community driven.

Video games are a problem if it begins to interfere with other aspects of life, but negatively looking down on video games from the get go is a very outdated stance. Skillful video games are some of the best team building, critical thinking exercises out there IMO

I generally agree with this. We have not one but two PS4s in our house. My son always plays with friends. However, he rarely, if ever asks to do anything with friends in person outside of school or organized sports. He doesnt ask if they can come over or if he can get together with them. On the rare occasion a friend shows up - I find out later that his parents cut off his wi-fi to get him to stop playing fortnite and made him go outside and find someone to hang with...that kid rode his bike over to our house and went into our basement to play Fortnite with my son.

Historically games were limited to sports titles in my house (I grew up with every sports video game) but since Fortnite was free it was hard to deny it. With 5 kids between the ages of 14 and 5, I am relatively well connected to their social lives. I can tell you this, parents are beside themselves with this game. Coaches are beside themselves. It is addicting on a whole other level.

It is a concern, I will leave it at that.

Just to play devil's advocate, is there really a difference between a group of friends going online to play Fortnite together, and going out to play baseball? Besides the exercise, anyway.

It is extremely rare to see any kids in the southwestern suburbs of Milwaukee playing a pickup game of baseball, soccer, etc. Perhaps basketball at the local playground.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the sitting around and playing video games, and the killing within the game, it is a chance for the kids to interact socially. My 14-year-old son plays different squads with members of his baseball and football teams. These are the same boys he plays basketball with as well. Sports has become so organized that kids don't want to have pick up games as often as they used to. A few weeks ago, they had come up with a 2v2 tournament within playground mode in Fortnite. Pretty amusing.

I play it sparingly and, as my son says often, am not that good at it.
