Final: DSL Brewers 10, DSL Mets2 2

DSL Brewers Box Score

First, I made a mistake yesterday. The DSL does not currently have a split-season format. Currently the playoff procedure is that all 6 division winners at the end of the full season make the playoffs, with the top two winners getting a first round bye. Incidentally, the last time the Brewers made the DSL playoffs was 2011, on a team lead by Orlando Arcia and Jorge Ortega. Cult heroes Gian Rizzo and Osmel Perez were also present, as was current Brewers minor league coach/erstwhile catcher Natanael Mejia. You might recognize a few other names there as well, including Angel Ventura and Elvis Rubio.

Anywho - the good guys won today thanks to 7 walks, 4 HBPs and one costly Mets error that lead to 4 unearned runs. CF Carlos Rodriguez broke out of his mini-slump with a 2-4 day. DH (usually C) Andres Melendez had 2 hits as well, including a double.

Starter Henry Medina did a "Henry Medina" (aka as a "Jorge Ortega") - 5 innings of work, no walks, a couple hits, a couple strike outs. Jose Romero, who is usually a starter, pitched 3 strong innings of relief, ceding only an unearned run.

No game tomorrow as the DSL All Star game takes center stage. The Brewers have 3 representatives this year: OF Carlos Rodriguez, OF Bryan Connell, and RHP Wilber Perez.

Carlos Rodriguez singles on a ground ball to second baseman Felix Valerio. Alwinson Valdez scores.

Andres Melendez doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Eulises Sanchez. Carlos Rodriguez scores. Oswel Leones scores.

Final: DSL Cubs1 3, DSL Brewers/Indians 0

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

The co-op team gets shut-out on 4 hits on a day the pitching actually held the opposing offense mostly in check. 17-year-old catcher Eduin Lugo made his pro debut as the team's DH, and went 1-2 with a walk before being pulled for a punch runner.

Alexis Ramirez worked 3 impressive innings of relief, logging 5 Ks against a walk and a hit. He didn't allow any runs.

Final: AZL Brewers 2, AZL D-backs 1

AZL Brewers Box Score

As mentioned above, 1st round pick Brice Turang made his pro debut and played shortstop. He singled in his first PA, walked in his second, and then struck out a couple of times. He also happened to score both of the Baby Brewers' runs. For the first time this year that I can recall, the Brewers' lineup was comprised entirely of teenagers. The oldest player on offense was rehabbing Mario Feliciano (with had a 2-4 night making his first rehab appearance), who was born 11/20/98. The only other player born in 1998 was 2B Edwin Sano. Mostly everyone else was born in 1999, except for Micah Bello and Pablo Garabitos, who were both born in 2000. Garabitos, born 7/30/00, is 9 days younger than Bello if you're keeping track at home. I feel old.

Ernesto Martinez made his first official appearance in the lineup since 6/24 - no word on what was keeping him out. He actually was in the lineup on Wednesday, but that game was suspended.

Half of the Brewers' pitchers were teenagers, which isn't an impressive. Starter Jose Parra gave up a 2nd inning run, but it was zeroes the rest of the way with the kudos spread over 5 relievers. Among them was Christian Meister, a recent MiLB FA signee making his Brewers debut. He's technically on a rehab assignment from Colorado Springs, though since he hasn't pitched in affiliated ball since 2016, they may ease him back for awhile in Arizona.

Michele Vassalotti pitched 3 innings of relief, allowing 2 singles and striking out 1. Interesting factoid: in 55.2 career innings pitched, he has yet to allow a home run. Sorry for the jinx next time out, Michele.

Wilson Tallies Three Hits and Three Runs in 9-7 Loss to Lynchburg

Weston Wilson went 3-for-3 with three runs and ran his hit streak to 13 straight games

cut.jpg

This was a real clunker thrown by Braden Webb. He especially had trouble with left handed hitters in the part I watched so I looked up his splits. On the year he is actually better against lefties than righties so maybe nothing in that. Alec Kenilvort and Daniel Brown finished the game for the Mudcats. Weston Wilson and Cooper Hummel had multi-hit games. Pat McInerney drew 3 walks but has not hit much so far at this level.

Braden Webb: 3 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 3 K

Alec Kenilvort: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Daniel Brown: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K

Weston Wilson: 3-3, 2B, BB

Cooper Hummel: 2-4, 2 2B

Pat McInerney: 0-1, 3 BB

BABY CAKES TAKE GAME TWO IN LOW-SCORING HOME RUN DERBY

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Sky Sox dropped game two to the Baby Cakes Friday night 4-3 to even the series at one game apiece. Though both teams hit two home runs, all four were solo shots, as the two squads combined to go 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Just as was the case last night, the first two innings of Friday night's contest were scoreless, followed by the Sky Sox scoring first in the top of the third inning. After the first two Colorado Springs batters were retired, Brett Phillips hit his fifth homer of the season, and the Sky Sox first home run of the second half to make it 1-0. Orlando Arcia then immediately followed up Phillips' home run with a solo dinger of his own to make it 2-0 Sky Sox. That was Arcia's second AAA homer of the season (4th overall). It was the first time the Sky Sox have gone back-to-back since Independence Day, when Arcia hit his first homer of the season in the first inning against New Orleans at Security Service Field, immediately before Tyrone Taylor followed up with a homer of his own.

The Baby Cakes responded in the bottom half of the third, as Isaac Galloway hit a solo homer of his own to make it 2-1. It was Galloway's ninth home run of the season, and the first for New Orleans since the All-Star Break.

After another two scoreless frames, the Sky Sox would score once again. Arcia led off the inning with a single on the first pitch he saw, with Taylor doubling on the very first pitch he saw to put runners on second and third, two pitches into the inning. Domingo Santana then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Arcia and advance Taylor to third. Taylor would be left stranded 90 feet from home however, sending it to the bottom of the sixth 3-1.

That score was short-lived, however, with the home team firing back. Eric Campbell and Rafael Ortega led off the inning with back-to-back walks, with a wild pitch allowing both runners to move up a base. With one out on the board, Jonathan Rodriguez drew a walk of his own to load the bases. Peter Mooney then grounded into a force out, but a throwing error by the Sky Sox allowed both Campbell and Ortega to score to tie the game at three runs apiece.

The seventh inning saw baserunners for both teams, but there wouldn't be further scoring until the bottom of the eighth. With one out on the board and nobody on, Rodriguez belted the fourth solo home run of the game to give the Baby Cakes their first lead of the series. On the next pitch, Mooney singled, before Cito Culver struck out for the second out of the inning, and Tomas Telis struck out for the third to send it to the ninth and give the Sky Sox a chance to come back from the one-run deficit.

There would be no comeback for the Sky Sox, however, as they went three up and three down to end the game. Jake Hager, Dylan Moore and Andres Blanco all struck out, with the Baby Cakes taking game two 4-3 to even the series at one game apiece.

Saturday's Preview: In game three of the second half of the season and this four-game series against the Baby Cakes in New Orleans, the Sky Sox are sending a yet-to-be-announced pitcher to the mound to face off against New Orleans' southpaw Jarlin Garcia, who is searching for his second win of the season.

Leaving Men On: Though the Sky Sox and the Baby Cakes combined for seven runs on Friday night, they also combined to go 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Colorado Springs went 0-for-6 with RISP, while New Orleans went 1-for-13 with RISP. There were also four solo homers in the game; two for each squad.

Friday the 13th: The Sky Sox are now 11-11 all-time on Friday the 13th after the loss on Friday night (6-6 at home, 5-5 on the road). The Friday the 13th game earlier this year on Friday, April 13th against Round Rock here in Colorado Springs was postponed due to cold temperatures and high winds. Friday night's game was the fourth time that the Sky Sox have faced New Orleans on Friday the 13th, with the Sky Sox now 2-2 against New Orleans.

Box has a little of everything, including poor Brewers defense, but that looks like the box score I'd pick out if I were out with the family and wanted an entertaining game for both the adults and the kids.
