Phillips continues to lower his worth. I'd imagine some of that has to do with him thinking he had a spot on the big league club this year. Medeiros looks like his stock is going up at least.... so strange that overall the pitching is succeeding and the hitting is flopping. Has that happened in the history of our minor leagues?

Final: DSL Mets2 8, DSL Brewers 4

DSL Brewers Box Score

With a game lead in their division, the Brewers' offense couldn't overcome Wilber Perez's first shaky start on the season and lose, falling into a 3-way tie for first place. They need to win on Friday and need the Phillies' team to lose in order to clinch the first-half division title.

The real blow actually came in the 7th inning as RHP Jose Espiritu made his pro debut, but did not record an out and was charged with 3 earned runs. Jhoan Cruz inherited a no outs and bases loaded situation from Espiritu and limited the damage to one run scored after Espiritu departed.

The offense was quiet until the 6th inning, when SS Victor Maria hit his first home run on the season, a 2-run shot that cut the lead to 4-2 at the time. Maria also added a single, but no one else in the lineup had more than one hit. Carlos Rodriguez went 0-4, and his now 1 for his last 22.

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

Leads of 3-0 and 5-3 both evaporated as the co-oppers fall to 11-21. The team's defense was as much to blame as the pitching in this one, as 4 errors lead to 5 unearned runs. Starter Kleiber Bordones made it through 2.2 IP, allowing 2 runs. Claudio Mota stranded two inherited runners and allowed an unearned run in his 1.1 innings in relief of Bordones. Ricardo Velasquez worked the final two innings and gave up a lone single.

LF Alejandro Marte went 2-3 with his first career triple, while DH/All-Star Bryan Connell and C Roberto Molina each had a single.

Missed Opportunities Give Chukars Two Run Win

Brewers Strand Tying Run At Third In The Seventh With One Out

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

Idaho Falls, ID - Down 5-1 after four innings, the Helena Brewers rallied for three runs with one out in the seventh, getting the tying run to third. However, Idaho Falls reliever Tyler Gray (W, 1-1) struck out Jean Carmona and Chad McClanahan, leaving that run stranded 90 feet away. The Brewers did not get a runner on in the last two innings, and gave up a key insurance run in the eighth, falling 6-4 to the Chukars at Melaleuca Field. With Great Falls beating Orem, the Brewers are now two games back of the Voyagers in the Northern division, the furthest back they've been all year.

For the second straight night, the Brewers scored in the first, as Yeison Coca's leadoff single against Kris Bubic scored on a two out wild pitch. Idaho Falls though like they did last night tied the game in the second as a leadoff walk to Nick Hutchins scored on a one out triple from Jose Caraballo. Julio Gonzalez then gave Idaho Falls the lead with a sac fly, making it 2-1 Chukars after two complete.

Bubic locked in from there, not allowing a hit in his final two innings. Idaho Falls extended the lead against Brewers starter Blake Lillis (L, 2-2) in the third with a solo homer from Nate Eaton, and then tacked on two more in the fourth with a two out rally, extending their lead to 5-1

Helena's bullpen kept the Chukars in check in the fifth and sixth, as did Gray, who entered to start the fifth. The Brewers then put the first four on against Gray in the seventh, with Helena's second run of the game scoring on a Jesus Lujano single that kept the based loaded, putting the tying run at first. Coca then grounded a ball back to Gray who flipped home for the first out, but catcher Brady Cox's throw to first sailed wide and down into the right field bullpen, scoring two and moving Coca, the tying run, to third.

Gray then squared up with Jean Carmona, who had struck out in each of his first three at bats leading into the battle. The 7th round selection out of Central Arkansas made quick work of Carmona, punching him out on three pitches. Chad McClanahan struck out as well, ending the inning with the tying run at third. Gray exited with two out in the ninth, and Daniel Duarte got the final out to pick up the save.

The Brewers look for the series split tomorrow in the finale, as Victor Castaneda takes the hill looking for his first win. Idaho Falls counters with right hander Connor Mayes. First pitch is at 7:15, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 7:00.

Helena Box Score

LG Castillo has been playing really well recently, kind of under the radar. In his hits in 9 of his last 10 games, and he's 12-34 with 3 triples and a home run in that stretch. It's been a hot and cold season for the 18-year-old 2017 17th rounder, as he went 10-20 to begin the season, then went through an 0-23 stretch before his current run.

2018 20th round pick Joey Matulovich made his pro debut with a clean inning including a strikeout. Starter Blake Lillis has had trouble missing bats in his last few starts and took the loss after giving up 5 runs in 4 innings.

Final: Colorado Springs 3, New Orleans 2

SKY SOX GARNER WIN #50 IN FIRST GAME OF SECOND HALF

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Sky Sox ended the first half of the season with a loss to New Orleans, but began the second half of the season with a 3-2 win over the Baby Cakes Thursday night to pick up their 50th win of the 2018 campaign.

After dropping the final game of the first half to New Orleans 7-4 on July 8, the Sky Sox kicked off the second half of the season by jumping out to an early lead over the Baby Cakes on Thursday night. After two quick and quiet scoreless innings led off the night, Colorado Springs would score first in the top of the third. In his second at-bat of the evening, Brett Phillips drew a one-out walk, coming home one batter later on an Orlando Arcia RBI double to take a 1-0 lead over the Cakes.

In the fifth inning the Sky Sox would score again, this time in less traditional fashion. Colorado Springs' starting pitcher Aaron Brooks led off with a double, and though the Baby Cakes recorded two swift outs, Tyrone Taylor would reach and Brooks would come home on a New Orleans throwing error to make it a 2-0 game. Brooks would close out the bottom of the fifth for the Sky Sox, having given up no runs on three hits with a sole walk and four strikeouts on the night.

In the top of the sixth, the Sky Sox would extend their lead once more. Dylan Moore, who just represented the Sky Sox in the All-Star Game in Columbus Wednesday, reached after being hit by pitch. With Andres Blanco at the plate, Moore stole second, with Blanco reaching and Moore scoring one pitch later on New Orleans' second error of the night to make it 3-0 Sky Sox.

The Baby Cakes responded in the bottom half of the frame with a couple runs of their own. Pinch-hitter Isaac Galloway led off with a four-pitch walk off Colorado Springs' new pitcher, Erik Davis. Galloway then stole second, and advanced to third on the Sky Sox first error of the night that also allowed Austin Dean to reach. J.B. Shuck flew out for the second out of the inning to score Galloway from third and make it a 3-1 affair. Tomas Telis then singled to plate Dean and make it a one-run ballgame at 3-2.

After scoreless seventh and eighth innings, the Sky Sox headed into the ninth frame hanging on to a one-run lead. Jake Hager grounded out for the first out of the ninth, before Quintin Berry and Phillips both popped out to go down in order and give the Baby Cakes one last shot in the bottom half.

Southpaw Quintin Torres-Costa came into the game for the Sky Sox to try to close out the ninth, striking out Telis for the first out of the inning. Christian Adames then singled to give New Orleans a chance, but Austin Nola then grounded into a double play to end the game, giving Torres-Costa his second win of the year and the Sky Sox their 50th win of the season.

After the three-day All-Star Break, the Sky Sox are on the road for four games against the Baby Cakes in New Orleans before returning home on Monday, July 16 to take on the Round Rock Express (TEX) for four games.

Friday's Preview: In game two of the second half of the season and this four-game series against the Baby Cakes in New Orleans, the Sky Sox are sending a yet-to-be-announced pitcher to the mound to face off against New Olreans' righty Tyler Cloyd, who is searching for his second win of the season.

All-Star Game Recap: The Pacific Coast League claimed the 12-7 victory over the International League for a second consecutive year at the 31st annual Triple-A All-Star Game at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio Wednesday. The 2018 mid-summer Classic featured two Sky Sox All-Stars - catcher Christian Bethancourt and infielder Dylan Moore.

After the IL squad got the night started with a run in the bottom of the first, the PCL batted across six runs in the top of the second, including an RBI single by Sky Sox All-Star starting catcher Bethancourt. The PCL would score two more in the top of the third to take an 8-1 advantage. Bethancourt completed his service after three frames of catching. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a line drive out to second base. The IL got within a run after combining for six runs over the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, the PCL extended their lead to 10-7, including a run scored by Sky Sox infielder Moore, who walked in his first at bat and remained in the game defensively at first base. Moore finished going 0-for-1 with a walk and a strikeout.

First Half in the books: The Sky Sox finished the first half of season with the third-best record in the Pacific Coast League (49-39), behind Fresno (52-37, 2nd, Pacific North) and Memphis (56-34, 1st, American South). As a squad, the offense ends the half with a .274 average (801-for-2924), which is good for sixth best in the PCL. Over 89 games, the team has collected 161 doubles, 36 triples, 85 home runs, 420 RBI, 304 walks, 736 strikeouts, and are the outright leaders in stolen bags (118) by 40. On the pitching end of things, Colorado Springs staff fares fifth best with their 49-39 record and 4.30 ERA. The staff to this point have totaled 759.0 innings of work and allowed 767 hits over 3,296 batters faced with 363 ER, 64 home runs, 294 walks, and 694 strikeouts tallied.

In Comparison: At the half last season (2017), the Sky Sox also led the American Northern Division. After 89 games, the Colorado Springs squad finished six games up in the conference with a 55-34 record.
