Pittsburgh Hypothetical- Sweeping or Getting Swept

rickh150

Posing a question here....

How much difference in confidence will you have in this team if we take all five against Pittsburgh or if we lose all five?

For me, it's more drastic than I'd like to admit. If we sweep them, I am looking at trade rumors more and playoff dates over the break..... maybe pop in the 82 DVD. If we get swept, I am pressing on the brakes, not letting my emotions get too carried away. Win all, I want a bigger splash at the deadline. Lose all, I might rather wait until August.

I realize it matters how the Cubs/Cards and Wild Card foes do as well, but this is a big series that undoubtedly gives management a better feel for this group and our collective playoff dreams. Because of the length of the series and having it run up against the break, the games should seem more important than a typical series.

If they win all 5, it probably doesn't mean much relative to the current scenario. They will still be in first and maybe gain a couple games on the Cubs after beating up on a bad team. It might be of note because it would bump them up to 100-win pace which would be insane given preseason expectations.

If they lose all 5, they fall back into the big pack of NL contenders that have been sitting around 10-12 games over .500. It would be bad for the hopes of winning the division but would probably put them in a position more consistent with preseason expectations.

I should note that the probability of these happening are about 3% each.

Well I guess we only have the getting swept scenario. I do think that will effect the Brewers from spending tons of prospect capital, when we are only competing for the one game wildcard playoff. I do think w make moves, just maybe not big ones.

Geez, man! These are the MILWAUKEE BREWERS! If there's anything I do know in this great big world after watching this team for 36 of my 45 trips around the sun, the 3% chance of being swept is more likely closer to 30%!

If we get swept it wouldn't surprise me in the least with the way we are playing right now. Losing that series to the Marlins like we did was dreadful and the Pirates are a lot better than Miami. :(

What a pathetic excuse of 4 days of baseball...they mailed it in and booked tee times early methinks.

Eh. It’s the brewers and they always fall on their face. Last year it was after the break, this year before. At least this time they have the break to regroup.

Rough stretch for sure, I hope we aren't big time buyers (and not just because of this stretch). This team just isn't ready yet, they need a real rotation. Peralta and one of the other young guys stretched out, Nelson and or Anderson actually pitching well and some FA or trade SP in the mix. We can't have a bunch of guys who have to be taken out before they get through the order 3 times because it just kills the bullpen. We also desperately need to fix SS and C long term.

This is a case of a team in a 5 year rebuild who hits their stride 3 years earlier than expected, too good to just sit on their hands without pissing off fans but not good enough to expect to win it all even with big moves. Just an awkward spot all around.

They kind of did it to themselves trading for decent to good major leaguers.

[sarcasm]This team is so smart. You can't blow a all star break lead if you don't have one![/sarcasm]

Now that the annual choke job has already started, I certainly hope they don't pay a premium for a rental- Machado. No sense in trading your top prospect pieces to chase a one game WC.

Do not trade any of Peralta, Burnes, Woodruff, or Ortiz at this point. Keep all of them and hope at least one or two of them become 2/3 level starters at the Major League level.

If you can get guys like Escobar, Happ, or Dozier without paying a premium, go for it.

Guys like Shaw were supposed to be filler guys who you could trade off so I have no issues with that. Yelich is a long term cost controlled player so I have no issue with that trade either. I don't like that we also signed Cain though, I feel that move put us on a clock and I don't know that it is a reasonable one. One of these moves was enough, both of them changed the short term expectations and I think it was too soon for it.

I mentioned this a while back too. The worst thing that could've happened to this team is playing like a contender last season in year 2 of a rebulid. It gave the illusion that we were better than we actually are and spending money during the offseason would be a detriment to the process.

Stats by Stats

The @Pirates completed their 5-game sweep of the Brewers with a 7-6 win.

It is the first time any team has swept a 5-game series since the Yankees did so in Boston in August 2006, and the first time for #LetsGoBucs since their September 1996 sweep of the Giants in San Francisco.
