Ideal ASG Voting Process

Recommended Posts

What you are suggesting is some kind of stats based computer process to take all bias out. But what stats are you going to use? What value do you put on defense? Do you use WAR to select which player goes? What about pitchers W and S and batters RBI's and SB? We tend to ignore counting numbers on this site but most fans still use those.

In the end, I'm fine with the current system. It's flawed but any process is going to be flawed. There will be some players who get slighted and not picked but that is life. The current system righted the Aguilar issue. Personally I liked the push to get Aguilar in the All star game. I think it was fun for the fans to try to vote their player in.

Voting - Perfectly fine. Send people the fans want to see.

Player Vote - Fine, who do the players think is deserving. Though it needs to be voted on closer to the game.

Manager Picks - Good, fix any snubs.

Final Vote - What fan base is more offended by their snubbed player.

Not every deserving person is going to make it, some that aren’t deserving will. Those guys will be fan voted though and rating or who people want to see matters too. The current system needs a few tweaks, but it’s honestly pretty good.

I think tossing out the 1 player minimum for each team rule is a horrendous idea. I can’t believe it even gets brought up by people. I wonder if the manager should pick all his guys and then if at the end he is missing a certain team THEN go and pick someone from that team. Do it all behind closed doors and make sure both teams are even. No need for a concrete number yearly.

The game may not mean anything, but players can get huge bonuses for making these games. Getting snubbed for someone who isn’t that good, but got there by fan vote or the 1-player minimum rule could be. Acostly decision.

Because I believe the best performing players for the current season should be represented and not guys that get in simply because they're big names?

That's the thing. Not all fans and players believe the ASG is for the players who have had the best half-season.

I'd just let the Fangraphs staff pick them :)

This could be sweet. If FG picked both teams, they could scrap the NL/AL thing and have an advanced metrics team against a traditional stats team.

I would love to see that game.

But I think it would alienate a mass.

The All Star Game is a game for fans to see all the league-wide favorites play in a single game, and it's an honor to the players to be selected. I'm fine with the system as is, and really don't care about the game very much regardless. I might watch if I don't end up having anything better to do.

If we eliminate the fan vote I wonder if we ever see a moment like this again.

The ASG is first and foremost a vehicle for the league to market it's stars and to have them (mostly) all be on the same field at the same time. While some players may miss out on AS game bonuses because Cal or Jeter get voted in by fans, the league would much rather the fans get to see who they want to see vs. having them replaced by some relative "unknown" having a good season. The final vote I think allows for the fans to recognize someone who is having a good season but is not totally on the fan's radar.

I agree that the 1 AS per team is a good rule, as it provides fans of all teams a reason to watch vs. the NBA where the West could be represented by the entire Warriors starting 5. Anything that drives more fans to watch baseball is a good thing.

Are we going to have players leaving the ballpark early like they used to do before the WS home field was ties to it?

Hasn’t that been done away with for quite a few years now?

When "it counted" players began sticking around.

Right, and it hasn’t counted for a few years...right? I don’t recall players bailing out early.
