Brewers Claim Harvey (8/24) - Have Until 12:30 to Complete Trade

Community Moderator

From Jon Heyman...

Brewers have looked into gausman, archer and wheeler, as @ByRobertMurray noted here. all are under control beyond this year. if, ultimately, they decide they want to hold onto their top prospects, they could go for matt harvey, another starter they've considered
Not just “at Night” anymore.

He’s not even pitching well lately. Why go this route?

Yeah, not a needle mover for me. I guess reports are that his stuff is improving and we are going to need another option if we run into innings limits on some of the other guys but he isn't a significant improvement over what we have.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Harvey might move at the August deadline.

He is only owed about $2M for the rest of the season - I don't think he makes it through the waiver wire.

I had assumed he had a higher salary, so I guess the first team that claims him in the NL is likely the only team that gets to negotiate for him, probably not the Brewers but things could change later in August I guess as a few teams fall out of contention.

Junior's been really pretty crappy for his past 7-8 starts (ERA over 6). Last night the defense imploded so there were piles of unearned runs, and there were lots of weird, fluky things, but it doesn't change the fact that they started hitting Guerra pretty easily after the 2nd inning.

I'm not in love with Harvey and I'm not even sure how much he's truly needed or whose roster spot he'd take (is Knebel quietly hurt?), but we claimed him and can get him for a very modest cost, I'd be glad to have another capable, non-dumpster-fire & possibly even good veteran arm for depth & insurance rather than watch Aaron Wilkerson pitch for the Brewers again this year (granted, Woodruff's ahead of him in the pecking order, but there's not much after him).

could we use harvey? Yes.

Sorry, woodruff is 2 years away and Burnes maybe 1. We are talking about the playoffs and im not sure Peralta is ready for that. He wont be pitching against a Reds team down Suaez and Votto.

We could use Harvey in long relief in the playoffs. Williams is 2 years away.

NL Ranks:

Bullpen's ERA = 3rd

Starter's ERA = 5th

Offense - runs per game = 11th

More bats please.

bats been doin pretty good lately. Just continue keeping LHP away from us and we will be fine.

We have better stats against LHP this year.

Woodruff has more than held his own when giving a chance and he's like 25ish already. He shouldn't be two years away. I hope for a lot of starts next year from him and hopefully he holds up. Very similar to Jimmy in my opinion but the difference is that when Jimmy came up we weren't trying to win so they could just let him go through the growing pains but they can't do that with Woodruff.

Yeah, I'm really shocked that we haven't given Woodruff more of a shot this year. Wasn't his last start in Philadelphia in early to mid June? And, if I recall - he was cruising in that game before CC felt the need to pull him really early for a pinch hitter. I was hoping that we'd get to see him get a couple more starts after that to see if he could get some confidence going with a bit more consistent work, but then I think we sent him right back down to AAA after that start to clear room for someone else. I just feel like we've yanked this kid around for the past 12 months now, and I'd kind of like to see what he could do. Of course, there is no way that'll happen at this point in the season with us right in the middle of a pennant chase.

We don’t seem to mind tossing Peralta out there or sticking Hader and Burnes in the pen. I hope Woodruff works out but there might be a reason he’s not getting his opportunity this season considering he’s older than those three.

There has to be some reason. They obviously don't even view him as much of a MLB pitcher...let alone a starter. He can't even find his way into the pen. Sure won't get any better of a chance next year in the rotation.

Well at this point it seems he was one needed to stay stretched out so the BP discussion is kind of moot other than proving that Peralta and Burnes are higher on their list. If it is the case that they don't think he's legit he probably should have been used in a trade while he still has some value, every day that goes on without him getting a chance reduces it. Although, of course there is value in him to MKE just as rotation depth as well even if they don't believe he'll ever be a legit starter type. I just don't see what's not to like, gets up to 99. Control and other stuff seems fine for a young guy and he didn't get rattled last year pitching during the stretch run.

Obviously I don't know, but thinking positively maybe they had him kind of pegged as the next one up once Miley faltered or another injury happened but that hasn't been the case yet. Or if Peralta continues to be shaky Woodruff could have took his spot if Davies never came back.

If I recall I think he had some minor injury around preseason that led to that Wilkerson start and maybe him missing his opportunity then.
