Houser down, Zagurski called up

The contract of LHP Mike Zagurski has been selected from Triple-A @skysox. RHP Adrian Houser has been optioned there.

2:32 PM - 28 Jun 2018 from Cincinnati, OH

Interesting choice to be honest. Cincy has a decent amount of good hitting lefties, so I'd imagine this would be the reasoning.

The Twins somewhat do as well, but the Braves do for sure with Freeman, Inciarte (so-so hitter but can run), Markakis.

No kidding! I don't know what else Ramirez has to do to earn a call-up. Zagurski is about as blah as you're gonna get for a lefty reliever. Maybe they are just looking for a guy they can call up for a few days until his spot is needed on the 40-man, without having to worry about him getting claimed on waivers. That's the only way this makes sense.

Maybe just me, but I have a hard time believing this dude is in the majors for that long.

So, seems to me again forcing a lefty in there who's not nearly as good of a pitcher as the righty options. If you don't have a good lefty I'd just rather use the better pitchers in those matchups, Barnes, Williams etc.

Ya, the only logic I can see here is that Z sticks around for a couple series and then he's off the 40 man. But they had an open spot and needed to add someone whether it was Z or Ramirez anyway.

Plus Nick Ramirez can hit. He and Suter could give better at bats than half our bench.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Um, holy cow. I get that we like to constantly recycle and throw away the 39th and 40th spot on our 40 man roster, but we shouldn't do it with the 24th and 25th spot on our 25.

Cripes, give the poor Nick Ramirez guy a shot already. If I were a journeyman minor leaguer with no MLB experience I would not want to get anywhere near the Brewer organization after seeing how frequently those types get chances here.

This is the type of move that happens when a team is working on a trade or two and is doing as much as possible to preserve 40 man roster flexibility in case they need to jettison whoever they call up tonight to make room for who's coming in...

that's at least my hope, because, well I don't want to see games hanging in the balance over the next week with this guy pitching to quality LH hitters.

Rosiak tweet

Craig Counsell says Mike Zagurski earned his callup with his strikeout numbers (48 in 30 IP) and overall performance at Class AAA Colorado Springs. "It wasn’t lefty-related," he said. "He was just throwing the ball well."

In reality, he's likely only going to be used in a mop up role anyways. Nothing to get overly upset about here...

Looking at his numbers I'm kind of in awe that this guy has managed to get to throw 75+ innings at the big league level.

If you guys thought Boone Logan was a great Lefty one out guy who can't get lefties out, this could be an even better fit for that role in our bullpen! (The new LOOGYWCGLO)

To be fair, they aren't wrong on Zagurski at AAA, at least from a numbers perspective. He's been straight-up filthy everywhere but Colorado Springs (1.06 ERA, .88 WHIP, 14.3 K/9). The only guy who can match those numbers outside of CS is Freddy Peralta.

Now granted it is debatable whether that will translate to big league success given that he has often been really good in AAA in the past, but this isn't exactly random or an affront to Nick Ramirez either.
