AUDIO via Matt Pauley's Brewers Extra Innings Podcast: "The Brewers continue to not just lead the NL Central but hold the best record in all of the National League but there are some areas that could still use some improvement. The offense is still looking for consistency with the bottom of the order struggling. Recent injuries have not helped either. Does the club need to do anything or does the fact that they have such a good record prove that they can withstand their offensive inconsistencies? Matt is joined by Tom Kurtz of "Reviewing The Brew" to discuss that and more.

The Brewers Double-A affiliate in Biloxi recently clinched a playoff spot by winning a first half division championship. The Shuckers radio broadcaster Garrett Greene also joins Matt to give an update on the team."

Final: DSL Brewers 5, DSL D-backs2 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers' "B" lineup only managed 3 hits, but 7 walks, 8 wild pitches, a HBP, and a passed ball helped them to score 5 runs which was more than enough behind the brilliant pitching of Wilber Perez and Dantel Ramirez.

The right-handed Perez pitched what will go down as one of the best Brewers minor league starts this year. No runs, no walks, 3 scattered singles, a hit batter, and 12 strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. The 20-year-old second-year pro was signed in the middle of last season, less than a year ago. He pitched somewhat anonymously in 9 games in 2017, none of them starts, to the tune of a pretty good 3.45 ERA in 15.2 innings. Not particularly memorable for being bad or good, just kind of there. Fast forward to this year and he's found himself pitching well in the DSL rotation. He has 26 innings pitched in 5 starts, has allowed just 15 hits (.170 BAA) and 6 walks (0.81 WHIP), while striking out 33; he owns a miniscule ERA of 1.04 (believe it or not, currently only good for 11th-best in the DSL). He was not any sort of marquee signing so we don't know much about him other than the stats, and he is a bit old for the league. Still though, great to see what's becoming a success story spring up out of nowhere.

Ramirez picked up his 3rd multi-inning save on the year (organizational philosophy, anyone?) and has been mostly dominant. Three of the 4 earned runs he's allowed have come on the 2 home runs he's allowed. Otherwise, the 19-year-old righty has pitched 14 innings, and given up only 7 hits (.135 BAA), 3 walks (0.71 WHIP), and has struck out 21. Like Perez, Ramirez was a non-descript signing, inking a deal with the Brewers this past November. If they keep this up, we'll be seeing them in Maryvale next spring in what should be the Brewers' strongest crop of stateside debuts in years, and quite possibly ever.

As I mentioned, only 3 hits for the offense but I wanted to touch on two players, both outfielders who have been overshadowed by the "big 3" of Carlos Rodriguez, Larry Ernesto, and Oswel Leones. First off, CF Alwinson Valdez was 0-1 but drew 3 of the team's 7 walks and stole 2 of the team's 5 bases. The 17-year-old Valdez leads the team with 11 walks, is second with 8 stolen bases in his first year of pro ball. Secondly, LF Juan Frias, also 17 and also in his first pro season, had a hit, a walk, and a stolen base. On the year though (through about 30 PAs), Frias is slashing .333/.483/.476, or a .959 OPS.

Final: DSL Indians 7, DSL Brewers/Indians 6

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

A late rally was foiled by the Indians (both the Indians pitching on the Brewers/Indians team and the Indians on offense who scored the go-ahead run against the Indians pitcher) and the co-op team drops another. Not much happening on either side of the ball for Brewers' players in this one. RF Bryan Connell and C Roberto Molina each had a single; LF Rafael Brito walked. The only Brewer to pitch was 2nd-year pro Ricardo Velasquez, who didn't allow a run in 2 innings of work.

DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log

There were four pitchers used today by the co-op team, three of them Indians, with ERAs of:

7.91

1.72

7.56

7.88

Guess which one was Velasquez.

From Wednesday --

OK, so clearly it was a rare instance this morning where I didn't even make an attempt to be non-transparent about a time crunch. If the game score itself didn't tempt you to check out the summary and notes, then hopefully the first paragraph I should have included for you this morning will.

The Sky Sox won a wild one in game three against the Memphis Redbirds Wednesday afternoon, 9-8. After going down 7-0 initially, Colorado Springs rallied late to tie the game 7-7 in the seventh inning, before going down 8-7 in the top of the ninth, ultimately winning 9-8 via a bases-loaded walk-off balk.

Final: Billings 9, Helena 1

Solomon Silences Helena Again

Billings Scores Four In The First To Bury Brewers Early

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

BILLINGS, MT - Billings starter Jared Solomon (W, 2-0) dominated the Brewers when he faced them on Saturday, shutting them out over six innings, and tonight he delivered more of the same. The 2017 11th round pick allowed just three hits over six shutout innings, striking out a career high seven. Behind a four run first inning, the Mustangs (4-8) cruised to a 9-1 win, snapping their four game losing streak. The Brewers (7-6) are now just 1-4 on the road in 2018.

Billings offense, which came into the ballgame last in the league in runs, threw a big punch at the Brewers in the first. Dylan Harris started the inning with a bloop double to right against Justin Bullock (l, 0-2), and with one out he scored on a double from Reshard Munroe. Drew Mount singled home Munroe with two out, and the next batter Bren Spillane homered on a payoff pitch to right, making it 4-0 early.

Bullock then locked in and retired the next ten he faced, but the Brewers were stifled again by Billings starter Jared Solomon. After back to back singles to start the first, Solomon then allowed just two more Brewers to reach base over the next five innings, finishing his line with just three hits over six shutout innings, walking only one.

Billings scored an insurance run in the fifth inning on a two out single from Mariel Bautista, and then added two in the seventh and eighth respectively against the Helena bullpen. Chad McClanahan doubled home a run in the eighth inning to avoid the shutout, but it was too little too late.

The Brewers look to split the brief two game series with the Mustangs tomorrow as they send Wilfred Salaman to the hill for his third start. Billings counters with Luis Alecis. First pitch is at 7:05 PM with the pregame show airing on helenabrewers.net beginning at 6:50.

Helena Box Score

Outside of a string of batters in the first inning, Justin Bullock pitched well. He used his changeup extensively, as it seems to be developing into a good offering. I wouldn't fret about his ERA - he's going to be a good one.
