Situational Shortstop

Greenleaf1

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I get the feeling we'll be seeing Brad Miller start at SS when Freddy Peralta pitches. His defensive liability at SS is limited for a pitcher like Peralta who is more of a strikeout/fly ball pitcher, where Miller doesn't figure to get as many plays at SS to make (he had exactly one yesterday by my count, a 7th inning infield fly ball, then was pulled for Arcia as defensive replacement in the 8th).

He could be used similarly when Chase Anderson starts, and then use Arcia for the more ground ball heavy pitchers and maybe Perez for everyone in between?

I would assume this was done on purpose by Stearns/Counsell, which would be smart to limit potential defensive liabilities.

He has the opportunity to hit his way into the lineup. That part is on him.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I agree. Really, none of the current rotation is really a GB heavy pitcher. Unless it's DAvies, Miley, or Woodruff getting the start I don't really mind sacrificing infield defense in the early going.

Once they get the the bullpen, especially with a lead I would make the defensive switch. Whether it's Aguilar getting a start at 3b or Miller at SS/2b. The bullpen has a few guys like Jennings, Jeffress, Barnes, and even Knebel who get a decent # of GB. Since Counsell is likely to make a double switch regardless once he goes to the pen I think this is a viable stop gap in certain games.

With Saladino due back next week, I imagine Miller will play minimally at SS. I think he'll likely see time around the diamond and be one of the top pinch hitting options. Not a bad guy to have in that role.

I agree that Miller won't see a ton of time at SS, but assuming Arcia gets sent down when Saladino returns, I'd say it will be more like:

Miller gets 50% of the starts at SS. All of them are against RHP.

Miller gets 25% of starts at 2B against only RHP.

Villar starts 75% of the games at 2B.

Mix in Perez a little bit (so maybe Villar is more like 67% at 2B).

Saladino starts 50% at SS. He faces LHP and also plays against some RHP when we have more of contact pitchers on the mound.

Saladino is a replacement late in the game for Miller.

Not an unreasonable plan, until Miller starts booting mildly difficult plays at SS and CC realizes he's not a SS. Also, probably factor in a likely DL stint for Shaw and Miller might see more time at 3B.

Arcia batting .185 in June needs to go to AAA to try to figure out it out. Saladino for Arcia first.

Saladino, Miller, Villar, and Perez can handle ss, 2b and back-up 3b. That means Sogard needs to go whenever they want to bring Santana or Davies back.

I think miller will be more than a PH

The guy could have 20-25 homers this year playing in miller park

IF he plays more

Miller has had 4 seasons with over 400 PA's, and he's hit more than 11 homers one time. Thinking he's going to be a guy to be a 20-25 homer guy (in half a season, no less) seems like a pretty big stretch all of a sudden.
