Final: DSL Phillies White 6, DSL Brewers 1

The Brewers offense collected ten hits but they were only able to turn that into one run as they fell to the Phillies by a score of 6-1. Leoner Colina got the start and was tagged with the loss after going six innings and allowing three runs on ten hits. The bulk of the offense came from the Brewers' outfield, as Larry Ernesto, Oswel Leones and Carlos Rodriguez each collected two hits. Leones also recorded an outfield assist while second baseman Luis Silva also added two hits.

Lucas Erceg, Blake Allemand, Gabriel Noriega and Clint Coulter all had two hits each. Keston Hiura added an HR.

On the mound, Zach Brown continued his fine season with a solid outing. He tossed 6.2 innings, giving up only a pair of runs. Three relievers would shut down the Lookouts the rest of the way.

From Quad Cities --

DAVENPORT — Something about facing Quad-Cities brings out the best in Wisconsin pitcher Bowden Francis.

For the second time this month, the Timber Rattlers’ right-hander handcuffed River Bandits batters with seven shutout innings of work.

In Monday’s 9-0 Midwest League victory at Modern Woodmen Park, Francis gave up four singles and struck out a career-high 10 batters as he went seven innings for the third time in his last four starts.

Francis’ work mirrored his effort in a 3-1 win over Quad-Cities on June 5, an outing which saw the Brewers’ seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft give up three hits and walk one batter while establishing his previous career high with nine strikeouts.

“He had a good mix, kept his fastball down in the zone, showed a good breaking ball. Everything he was throwing at us seemed to work,’’ River Bandits manager Mickey Storey said after his team was shutout for just the fifth time in 76 games this season.

“I had to double check his numbers during the game. He came in with an ERA just under 5.00 but he’s pitched a lot better than that against us.’’

Francis, now 4-4, wasn’t the only problem posed by Wisconsin as it ended its second 10-game losing streak of the season in emphatic fashion.

The Timber Rattlers chased River Bandits starter Parker Mushinski from the game one out into the fourth inning.

“Mushinski didn’t have much of anything working for him,’’ Storey said. “He’s had a couple of games where he’s struggled with a pitch, but he’s been able to work around it. He couldn’t do that this time. It happens.’’

By then, Wisconsin was on its way to scoring runs in each of the first four innings, piling up seven of its 13 hits and scoring all of the runs it needed to counter a quiet Quad-Cities offense.

Tristen Lutz drove home single runs for the Timber Rattlers in each of the first two innings, putting Wisconsin on the board with a run-scoring double before extending the lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly in the second.

The Timber Rattlers doubled their lead a two-run third inning that opened with a Payton Henry homer to left before scoring three runs with one swing of the bat in the fourth.

After loading the bases on three straight one-out walks, Jay Feliciano cleared them with a two-run single that saw a third score on the River Bandits’ second error in as many innings.

K.J. Harrison added the Rattlers’ final two runs when he doubled with two outs in the eighth.

Quad-Cities threatened to prevent being shut out by more than two runs for the first time this season in both the eighth and ninth innings.

The River Bandits, whose seven-hit attack was led by two hits apiece by Logan, Mattix and David Hensley, loaded the bases in the eighth and put on to open the ninth but came away empty.

“Mattix and Hensley, the new guys, are swinging the bats well and we’re going to need that from them as we move forward,’’ Storey said. “We need any offense we can get.’’

Is the horse and buggy transporting Domingo Santana to Colorado Springs set to arrive tomorrow?

That is concerning. You'd think the guy would want to play and get himself righted. He's got no one to blame but himself for the situation he's currently in.

This happens all the time with mlb demotions - and it's not like domingo can't be hitting like crazy on the side. It wouldn't surprise me if he had to take some time to get living arrangements set up, because they told him that he would be down quite awhile.

Final Game One: Missoula 10, Helena 2

Missoula Whips Helena 10-2

Osprey Plate Six In Third Inning

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Helena, MT - Despite jumping out to a two run lead in the third inning, the Brewers couldn't hold down the Osprey offense. Playing as the home team, Missoula made their mark in the bottom of the third inning, sending ten men to the plate and scoring six, putting Helena in a hole they couldn't recover from. The Osprey added on four more runs, pounding the Brewers 10-2.

Three straight singles in the third gave Helena a 1-0 lead with the RBI coming from Jean Carmona. David Fry stepped in two batters later against Wilfry Cruz (W, 2-0) and sent a ringing double down the left field line, scoring Yeison Coca to extend the lead.

With rain starting to fall, Helena starter Victor Castaneda allowed the first three to reach in the bottom of the third. Eddie Hernandez came to the plate with the bases loaded and nobody out, but before he could step in the umpiring crew called for a rain delay. The delay lasted 20 minutes, but Castaneda punched out Hernandez for the first out. Zack Shannon then hit a sac fly, cutting the lead in half. Zack Jones hit a ground ball to second that could have ended the inning, but the ball took a wicked hop on Yeison Coca, and ricocheted into the outfield scoring Luis Cossio to tie the game.

Joe Robbins then walked, and Cesar Garcia delivered a two run double, giving Missoula the 4-2 lead and ending the night for Castaneda. Clayton Andrews then came in to face David Sanchez, who doubled home two to extend the lead to four.

The Brewers managed just six hits in the ballgame, with only two coming after the third inning.

Helena Game One Box Score

This was technically a home game for the Osprey. An earlier game at Missoula was rained out, but since the teams didn't play again in Missoula for the rest of the first half, the game needed to be played at Helena. Clearly, the home crowd vibes envigorated the Osprey.

Six hits and 4 walks scattered throughout the Helena lineup, with the lone extra-base knock being David Fry's 3rd inning double. After a hot start, the offense has petered out a bit. Hopefully, this young group can rebound, adjust, and get back in business.

Three ugly pitching lines, so we won't get into that though starter Victor Castaneda (pictured above) was only charged with the one earned run.

Final Game Two: Helena 4, Missoula 1

Brewers Earn Split With Osprey

Helena Breaks Tie With Three Run Fifth

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Helena, MT - Tied at one going into the fifth inning, the Helena Brewers strung together a two out rally, scoring three to take a 4-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish in game two of their double header against Missoula. Blake Lillis (W, 1-0) pitched five innings and allowed just one run to earn his first professional win since 2016.

Missoula started the game with three straight singles to score a run, but Lillis induced a fielder's choice for the first out, and Yeison Coca turned a 4-3 double play to end the inning.

The defensive wizardry spring boarded the Brewers offense as they loaded the bases on a single from Jean Carmona, a walk from Chad McClanahan, and a single from Nick Egnatuk. David Fry grounded out to short, but it plated Carmona to tie the game.

Lillis and the Osprey bullpen kept throwing zeroes on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth, when Helena put together the game defining rally. With two out and nobody on against Matt Ladrech (L, 0-1), Carmona singled, and McClanahan followed with a single of his own. Egnatuk then ripped a line drive into the left center field that rolled to the wall, scoring both and giving Helena the lead. Fry then followed with a seeing eye single up the middle, extending the lead to three.

Missoula then threatened in the sixth, getting the first two on against Lillis, ending his night. Chad Whitmer then entered and got Zac Almond to hit into a 4-3 double play. Joe Robbins then popped out to right to end the inning. Whitmer then got the side in order in the seventh to lock down his first save of the season.

The Brewers and Osprey battle tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Aaron Ashby makes his first career start for Helena, while Pedro Zorrila takes the ball for Missoula.

Final: AZL Brewers 10, AZL Mariners 2

AZL Brewers Box Score

The Baby Brewers' offense pounded on the Submariners (#amirite) pitching staff and the Brewers' pitching staff was able to work out of a number of early jams, as the good guys push their record to 4-3. Not for nothing, they were not the first team to lose the Mariners, who are now 0-7.

Three different players had three base knocks: CF Micah Bello (3-5, SB), C Alex Hall (3-5, 2B), and RF Pablo Garabitos (3-4, 2B, SB). Garabitos' first hit of the night, a second inning single, was his first pro hit. 3B Jess Wiliams had a multi-hit night as well, going 2-4 including a double.

Starter Joel Pinto worked 4 innings and gave up one run, documented below. He's always been a pitch-to-contact type so good to see 5 Ks as well. Cam Robinson gave up an unearned run in his 3.1 innings, striking out 4. Mitch McIntyre finished things up with 1.2 scoreless innings.

AZL Brewers Game Log

The game could have gone a lot differently had this gotten out of hand, so give credit to Joel Pinto:

AZL Mariners Bottom of the 3rd

Cody Staab strikes out swinging.

Cesar Izturis Jr. doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Micah Bello.

Beau Branton singles on a ground ball to right fielder Pablo Garabitos. Cesar Izturis Jr. to 3rd.

Cal Hernandez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Pablo Garabitos. Cesar Izturis Jr. scores. Beau Branton to 2nd.

Sebastian Ochoa walks. Beau Branton to 3rd. Cal Hernandez to 2nd.

Danny Contreras strikes out swinging.

Nolan Perez grounds out, second baseman Edwin Sano to pitcher Joel Pinto.

Bello is off to a very Tyrone Taylor ish start to his career in Arizona. I think Taylor could be a pretty good comp for him. Seem to have pretty similar profiles. I’d be very happy with that, Taylor was a top prospect for a reason before he hit a wall & the injuries piled on

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)
