Max Lazar very impressive again! Not bad for freshly turned 19 year old! Still early but wow! I’m shocked with how outstanding our bats have been! Almost the entire lineup is 20 or under, most 19 & they pounding out hits! Thought they may struggle early but they adjusted well!

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

Final: Biloxi 7, Chattanooga 2

Biloxi Box Score

Biloxi bats came out thundering on Friday, scoring four runs in the top of the 1st. It would be enough for the win, as Shucker pitchers held Chattanooga to just two runs. In a nice performance, Kodi Medeiros would throw five innings and give up only a single unearned run while getting the win. He struck out eight while walking two.

Wade Miley, in a rehab assignment, started the game and gave up three hits and a run in two innings of work. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three.

Corey Ray, Lucas Erceg and Max McDowell would each get a pair of hits, while Troy Stokes Jr. would hit a 2-run HR.

Batting

Corey Ray: 2-5, 2B, 3B

Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-5, HR

Lucas Erceg: 2-5, 2B

Trent Grisham: 0-3, 2BB, SB

Max McDowell: 2-3, BB

Pitching

Wade Miley: 2.0 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 0BB, 3K

Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 8K, Win

Jon Olczak: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K

John Perrin: 1.0 IP 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K

Notes

Jon Olzcak continues to put up nice numbers in 2018. In 32 innings for the Shuckers out of the pen, he had an ERA of 1.13. He has struck out 36, walked 7 and only given up 19 hits.

Final: DSL Cubs2 6, DSL Brewers 5 (10 innings)

DSL Brewers Box Score

Late comeback couldn't clinch the win and no runs in the 10th sealed the Brewers' fate. The offense managed only 5 hits, though they did work 7 walks as well. DH Francis Casado and 1B Jesus Chirinos each had a double. On the mound, Henry Medina only gave up 1 earned run over 5.2 innings. Joandris Tolentino gave up late runs that necessitated the Brewers' comback. Jose Alberro took the loss despite 3 innings of no hit/no walk ball. Bizarre.

Final: Iowa 4, Colorado Springs 3

The Sky Sox haven't posted their road recap on their site yet, so we'll copy and paste things here --

CUBS SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH WALKOFF WALK VERSUS SKY SOX

The Sky Sox dropped a heartbreaker in game two against the Iowa Cubs Friday night in front of a sellout crowd in Des Moines, losing 4-3 on a two-out walkoff walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to even the series at one game apiece.

After posting their fourth shutout of the season against Iowa last night, the Sky Sox opened game two with five more shutout innings before allowing their first run of the series in the sixth frame, for 14 shutout innings against the Cubs to start this series.

The first three frames of game two were scoreless for both squads, until the Sky Sox scored first in the top of the fourth inning. Andres Blanco grounded out for the first out of the fourth frame, but Tyrone Taylor hit a single to extend his current hitting streak to seven games, before Brad Miller lined out for the second out of the inning. Christian Bethancourt then stepped into the box, and after fighting off a few pitches, he belted his 10th homer of the season to give the Sky Sox the first two runs of the game.

In the top of the next inning, Colorado Springs tacked on some more offense. Jett Bandy hit a two-out single, followed by a single off the bat of Sky Sox starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff to move Bandy into scoring position. Blanco then followed suit with Colorado Springs' third single in a row, scoring Bandy and giving the Sky Sox a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the home team broke up the 14-inning scoreless streak with a run of their own. Wynton Bernard led off the inning with a double, advancing to third on a Woodruff wild pitch. With two outs on the board, Victor Caratini lined an RBI single to score Bernard and break up the shutout, making it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Cubs tried to capitalize on that momentum in the bottom of the next inning. Bijan Rademacher hit a one-out single to become the first baserunner of the half-inning. Ryan Court then doubled to put runners on second and third for pinch-hitter Lane Adams, who struck out. Bernard then came to the plate with a chance to even the game, with the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at the plate, but a groundout brought the rally and the inning to an end.

After the Sky Sox went quietly in the top of the eighth, aside from Taylor's second hit of the game, Iowa threatened again in the bottom of the inning. Mark Zagunis led off with a single, and Jacob Hannemann was hit-by-pitch to put two on, with no outs. Caratini then walked to load the bases for David Bote, who hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Zagunis and make it 3-2. Taylor Davis then hit a sacrifice fly of his own to score Hannemann and tie the game up. With one on and two out, Rademacher hit a single to put two on for Court, who struck out to send the tied game to the ninth.

Keon Broxton proved to be the only Sky Sox batter to reach in the ninth, drawing a two-out walk. He then stole second for his 23rd swipe of the season, but was stranded at second, giving the Cubs a chance for a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth, which would make for their seventh walkoff of the season.

Zagunis mirrored Broxton's effort with a two-out walk for the Cubs, advancing to second on a Hannemann single to put the winning run in scoring position. Caratini, who already had a walkoff single earlier in the season, hit a single to load the bases to very nearly walkoff the game, but was reigned in on a beautiful defensive play by Miller. With Bote at the plate and the bases loaded, Bote drew a walkoff walk to force the winning run home and snap Iowa's seven-game losing streak, winning game two 4-3 to even the five-game series at one game apiece.

The Sky Sox enter into games three and four of a five-game set against the Iowa Cubs tomorrow with a 12:08 PM Central scheduled first pitch for game one of a doubleheader at Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa, and a 7:08 PM Central scheduled pitch for game two.

Saturday'ss Preview: In the third game of the five-game series against the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park in Des Moines and the first game of the scheduled Saturday doubleheader, the Sky Sox are sending righty Bubba Derby to the mound to face Cubs righty Alec Mills.

Extended: Outfielder Tyrone Taylor extended his hit streak to seven games Friday night with two hits. Over the seven games, he is 11-for-31 with six runs, two doubles, three home runs, and seven RBI.

Box Score / Game Log

The summary wasn't big on listing pitchers in action. It was Corbin Burnes and Erik Davis who were victimized late. Because we all have such a vested interest, here's Burnes' two innings from the log --

Back to that Sky Sox box, Brad Miller played a clean game at second base, but was 0-for-4, now with a .554 OPS in his small 27 at-bat Colorado Springs sample.

Brett Phillips becoming a bit of an afterthought, 0-for-4 with three K's. No stolen bases here, but Phillips is 9-for-9 in SB attempts this AAA season. Jake Hager was 0-for-4 with one K and played shortstop in his 2018 AAA debut.

Final: Cedar Rapids 3, Wisconsin 2

Kernels Clip Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

This has been such an extended road trip of doom, so we don't have the much-appreciated post-game podcasts where we can gain additional insights into the club, but this can't be fun. Second straight one-run loss to open the second half.

Box Score / Game Log

Catcher Payton Henry, again batting third, 2-for-3 with a walk, threw out 1-of-2 baserunners. Consistently a beacon within the Wisconsin stat lines.

Otherwise, kind of a non-descript box again from the Rattlers. Team streak, more often the negative kind.

Offense Shines Again As Helena Downs Billings

Lazar Earns First Win With 5.1 Innings Of One Run Baseball

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Brewers' L.G. Castillo drives in two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning of Friday's game against the Mustangs in Helena.

HELENA, MT - The big inning has been the friend of the Helena Brewers early on in 2018, and Friday night against the Billings Mustangs was no exception. After scoring two in the first, the Brewers (4-2) exploded for four runs in the fifth inning, cruising to a 7-2 victory over the Mustangs (2-4) at Kindrick Legion Field. Max Lazar (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season, allowing just one run over 5.1 innings. Lazar has allowed just one run in 11.1 innings in 2018.

Helena Brewers keep offense rolling in win over Billings Mustangs

Jean Carmona and Yeison Coca photos at the link just above...

“(Max) Lazar has been awesome his first two outings,” Manager Nestor Corredor said. “He set the tone early and threw a lot of strikes and kept the defense live. Because he threw so many, he makes all the infielders lock in the game so we can make all the plays behind him.”

Box Score / Game Log

Here you go, Timber Rattlers fans. 2019 is looking good!

All on board the Max Lazar train, folks! Remember, this is the Pioneer League, where ERA's go to die.

This team looks like it's going to be a blast, and the whole youth movement thing is a sweet change-up from so many past years, nothing against the Dallas Carroll's, K.J. Harrison's and other college players of recent years. Heck, this is like following an advanced high school travel team.

Carmona. Yeah.

Att: 947.

That's a solid crowd for Helena. Bittersweet, but the final season is motivating the youngsters early on.
