Final: DSL Brewers 10, DSL Cubs2 2

DSL Brewers Box Score

Your 1st place DSL Brewers win again, clobbering the second DSL Cubs team 10-2. The top three in the order (outfielders Larry Ernesto, Oswel Leones, and Carlos Rodriguez) went a combined 7-13, including an Ernesto triple and a Rodriguez double. 2B Francisco Gonzalez also contributed a double and a walk.

Starting pitcher Wilber Perez was fantastic until he seemed to run out of gas in the sixth. Perez wound up throwing 5.2 innings and allowed no earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Both walks and both of his wild pitches occurred in the 6th inning.

DSL Brewers Game Log

The fifth inning gave the Brewers what turned out to be an insurmountable lead:

Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 10, DSL Rays2 9

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

The co-op's offense was able to overcome the pitching staff's best efforts to lose the game in a back and forth affair, giving the team their 4th win in 17 games. RF Bryan Connell had a huge day, hitting his 4th and 5th home runs as well as adding a single. I wouldn't be surprised to see Connell stateside soon as the 19-year-old is just obliterating DSL pitching to the tune of a 1342 OPS through about 45 plate appearances. In addition to the 5 home runs, he has 10 walks against 9 strikeouts.

Another Brewers farmhand, 3B Rafael Brito, joined the fun by hitting his first home run on the year as part of a 2 hit, 1 walk day. C Luis Valderrama got his first professional hit, a line drive single in the 5th. CF Reidy Mercado singled and walked in 5 trips to the plate.

Only one Brewers pitcher was used, righty Ricardo Velasquez. It was a pretty good outing too, as he allowed no earned runs in 3 innings of work.

DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log

The winning run:

DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 9th

Alberto Figuereo remains in the game as the designated hitter.

Marlin Made doubles (2) on a line drive to center fielder Daiwer Castellanos.

Bryan Connell singles on a line drive to center fielder Daiwer Castellanos. Marlin Made to 3rd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Bryan Dimas replaces Bryan Connell.

Joseph Paulino strikes out swinging.

Carlos Gomez intentionally walks Rafael Brito. Bryan Dimas to 2nd.

Jesus Maestre singles on a line drive to pitcher Carlos Gomez. Marlin Made scores. Bryan Dimas to 3rd. Rafael Brito to 2nd.

Luis Valderrama pops out to first baseman Robert Valera.

Moises De La Cruz grounds out, third baseman Amador Arias to first baseman Robert Valera.

Wilkerson being Wilkerson. Ramirez being Ramirez (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER; 1-1 w/a RBI).

Those two deserve a shot somewhere. Might not be here, but if another team is looking for major-league ready guys in a trade there's two of them for you.

Everyone is not, in fact, in action. Helena rained out.

Helena press note:

MISSOULA — Due to extremely wet field conditions, tonight’s game between the Helena Brewers and the Missoula Osprey has been rained out. Because the Brewers & Osprey do not play again in Missoula in the first half, the game will be made up as part of a double header on June 25th at Kindrick Legion Field. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 5:30 PM (6:30 Central).

Back in the game, Crawford makes every pitch count

In the interest of full disclosure, I work at the paper that published it.

Final: Cedar Rapids 5, Wisconsin 4

Kernels Top Timber Rattlers to Start Second Half

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Read the fine write-up for context, but we'll mention that Tristen Lutz thankfully stayed in the game:

Lutz raced back and reached out for the ball at the wall, but missed the ball and crashed into the wall. Lutz fell to the ground and couldn't get after the ball on the warning track.

Box Score / Game Log

Road woes continue.

Starter RHP Christian Taugner no walks, but catching too much of the plate, ten hits in 5.2 innings.

Buies Creek 7, Carolina 1

Cats Open Second Half with 7-1 Loss in Buies Creek

Carolina was held to just a run and three hits in Thursday's second half opener

Pretty miserable day for the Mudcats. They managed only three hits, one of them a triple by Mario Feliciano which knocked in the only run of the day for the Mudcats. Later, Feliciano had to leave the game after a runner slid into him at home. To add insult to injury, he was given an error on the play, his second of the game. Phil Bickford gave up 3 walks in one inning. Devin Hairston played second base while Tucker Neuhaus was the shortstop.

Devin Williams 2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Alec Bettinger 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Phil Bickford 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K

Mario Feliciano 1-1, 3B

A night after surrendering 17 runs...

SKY SOX BLANK CUBS 5-0 TO BEGIN IOWA ROAD TRIP

They're still posting the all-caps heading, but it's justified here :).

We link, you click, you read, everyone's happy and better off with the knowledge like this surprising tidbit:

The Sky Sox stole 100 bases as a team on Thursday night at Iowa against the Cubs. In 2017, the team combined for 99 stolen bags over the entire season.

Box Score / Game Log

Keon Broxton is 20-for-24 in SB attempts. Quintin Berry is languishing on the Helena paper roster. If Broxton isn't up by September 1st, he makes sense as the speed call-up, not Berry. If you can get past the obscene strikeout rate, Broxton's been fine.

Nick Ramirez, dual threat.

Iowa Bottom of the 6th

Lane Adams flies out to left fielder Tyrone Taylor.

Mark Zagunis walks.

Pitching Change: Nick Ramirez replaces Aaron Wilkerson, batting 9th.

Bijan Rademacher grounds into a force out, second baseman Nate Orf to shortstop Brad Miller. Mark Zagunis out at 2nd. Bijan Rademacher to 1st.

Final: Chattanooga 12, Biloxi 2

Early Lookouts' Barrage Takes Down Shuckers 12-2

Stokes Homers For Biloxi In Return From All-Star Break

By Spencer Siegel

cut.jpg

(Michael Krebs)

Biloxi Box Score

Egad. That was ugly. Biloxi kicked off the second half of the season with a stinker. The offense had only 4 hits and 2 walks - and struck out 15 times. The highlight was Troy Stokes Jr.'s HR in the 9th to spare the Shuckers the shutout.

Biloxi pitchers weren't much better with Luis Ortiz getting rocked. The big righty gave up nine hits and six runs in four innings.

Batting

Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-4, HR

Luis Aviles Jr.: 1-3

Blake Allemand: 1-4

Kesten Hiura: 1-4, 2B

Pitching

Luis Ortiz: 4.0 IP, 9 hits, 6 ER, 1BB, 1K, Lose

Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1BB, 3K

Brad Kuntz: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K

Danny Reynolds: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K

Notes

Hiura has 8 doubles in just 64 ABs while at Biloxi.

Stokes Jr.'s HR was his 10th of the year - tying him for 5th in the Southern League.

Biloxi Game Log

There was nothing fun in the game log. Don't look at it. You will cry.

Some nice ABs tonight from #Brewers Edwin Sano. Slightly undersized INF, but hit HR off letter-high FB earlier in game & has showed patience and discipline in next plate trips. Switch hitter with some speed.

Final: AZL Indians2 16, AZL Brewers 10

AZL Brewers Box Score

Baby Brewers were completely undone by 4 errors last night as the pitching staff gave up 9 unearned runs. 10 runs from the Brewers' offense was not enough to overcome the defensive issues. The Crew drop to 1-3 on the season, and gave the Indians2 group their first win in 3 tries.

One pro debut last night: 39th round pick Caleb Marquez, drafted as a linebacker-esque looking prep catcher out of Missouri, played DH and singled in 4 plate appearances. SS Edwin Sano (mentioned in the post above this one), 2B Jess Williams, and C Luis Avalo all had two hits. Sano and Avalo both hit their first home runs of the year. 3B Aaron Familia doubled and walked 3 times, while C (playing 1B) Bryan Torres and Sano walked twice apiece.

Torres was picked off first base, marking the 4th times in 4 games the Brewers have had a runner picked off. They're only 3 for 7 in stolen base attempts as a team, and have run into a number of other outs on the bases. Without going through every at bat, I'd guess that's 12-14 outs on the base paths in the first 4 games. Not good.

The aforementioned errors went to Sano, Williams, Familia, and CF Nic Pierre. Avalo also had a passed ball charged to him and there were 3 wild pitches by the staff.

Only 3 of the 5 pitchers the Brewers used gave up any earned runs. Mitch McIntyre gave up 4 runs, none earned and Peter Strzelecki gave up one run, unearned. Jesus Brea pitched the only clean inning of the night, a 1-2-3 9th. Starting pitcher Jose Parra was making his stateside debut, and gave up 9 runs, 5 earned, in 2.1 innings. 2017 25th rounder Karlos Morales started the 4th inning and went 2.2 IP, allowing 2 earnies. Despite being a HS-picked AZL veteran, Morales doesn't turn 19 until August and is regarded to have one of the best curveballs in the system.

The bad news for the Brewers' staff ERA is that it went up to 6.35 last night. The good news is that despite giving up 9 earned runs in 9 innings, the Indians2's staff ERA *dropped* to 10.38. Yes, two numbers to the left of the decimal point. It could be worse, folks.

AZL Brewers Game Log

This was good, anyway:

Bryan Torres singles on a line drive to right fielder Jhon Torres. Francis Florentino scores. Caleb Marquez to 3rd.

With Edwin Sano batting, wild pitch by Luis D. Garcia, Caleb Marquez scores. Bryan Torres to 2nd.
