Two months until the draft

Now Laird, where?s that guy now?

AL Rookie of the Month, April 2004

Of course, by May, he had torn a ligament in his thumb, and was out 3 months. By the time he got back, Rod Barajas had stolen his starting role.

This year, with Sandy Alomar having been signed, Gerald Laird will probably spend most of the year in AAA. Still, though, I'm not sure he's the guy you want to question Beane for having drafted (& followed).

[i would question how wise it was for Boras to hold Drew out for a year, keeping him away from any sort of formal competition for most of that time, and in essense keeping him off the 40-man roster for a whole year (burning an option year that would have otherwise forced him into major league service a year earlier). If you really believe that Drew is going to be even an average major leaguer, odds are he'll make more money on the back end of his career than he's holding out for. Then again, I've decided that it's easier not to question Boras decisions in the Draft Forum.]

Again, not ripping Beane here, just the "Golden Footsteps" that a wide percentage of followers of the game, propogate his genius at his every move, including some that don't work out as the slam dunks that they are perceived to be when they happen.

See currently: the Hudson trade. The Mulder trade is over shadowing Meyer's early struggles at AAA and the whole value of that trade is tied up with him. (unless you're also a Charles Thomas fan)

Yet the perception is that Beane succesfully delt BOTH his two studs.

Now it is way too early to write Meyer off, but how about throwing some critism his way over trading away Bonderman for a simple grudge and reciving what? Ted Lilly?
