Kennedy's Home Run The Difference In Helena's Loss

Brewers Strand Tying Run At Second In Eighth

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

Nice concise write-up from Greg. Not too many 3-1 games in the Pioneer League.

David Fry's first professional home run forever online for him, and RHP Victor Castaneda with some nice hair flow.

Box Score / Game Log

Not quite yet 19 years old despite it being his 2nd pro season (19 next month), RF L.G. Castillo has five singles in his first 11 AB's for a shiny .455 average.

20-year-old LHP Blake Lillis (three shutout innings) with his first action since 2016, welcome back.

What a treat - we get Helena media notes this year, thanks Greg!

We learn tidbits like this --

Antonio Pinero will man the shortstop position, but will abandon switch hitting and hit exclusively right handed.

Final: Salt Lake 17, Colorado Springs 9

Exhibit A as to why there will no longer be a AAA presence in the Springs --

SKY SOX OVERPOWERED BY BEES IN SERIES FINALE

The contest totaled 17 extra-base hits, 10 of which were by Salt Lake with five home runs; Colorado Springs collected seven extra-base hits with two home runs.

Back on the road to Iowa next.

Plenty more details at the link above.

Zach Davies was limited to 31 pitches, as planned. 40-man roster RHP's Alec Asher and to a lesser but still painful extent, Jorge Lopez, will be cursing this night for a while.

Who is Jesse Williams on the AZL squad? Says he is 19 so I would think in this or last year's draft class but he is in neither. Wasn't on DSL squad last year. A rare HS UDFA? Haven't seen his signing listed though. Bats L, listed at 6'4", 192.

Good to see Blake Lillis pitching again.

Final: AZL Reds 10, AZL Brewers 7

AZL Brewers Box Score

A 7-4 6th inning lead did not hold as the AZL Brewers drop their second game in a row to open the season.

Two pro debuts last night, as noted a few other places in the thread. Australians! 19-year-olds Jess Williams and Alex Hall from the land down under played in their first (US organized) pro game. Williams found more success, and quite a bit of success actually, as he went 2-3 with a triple, a walk, and 2 RBIs. He did commit an error playing at second base. Though he was ostensibly signed as a shortstop, Williams has a big frame at 6'4 and would seem to be a better fit at second or third, but we'll see how it pans out. Hall took an 0-4 and was 0-3 in throwing out runners.

Elsewhere in the lineup, Micah Bello kept raking with a single and 2 triples in 5 ABs. He also added his second stolen base in as many games, though he was caught stealing today and was picked off yesterday. So it goes with 17-year-olds. NDFA Connor McVey, at DH in this one, hit his first career HR in the 4th inning, which also happened to be the AZL club's first home run of the year. He added a single as well. The other Baby Brewers with multi-hit (specifically multi-single) games were RF Francis Florentino (making his stateside debut), and SS Edwin Sano. It's interesting to note that the switch-hitting Sano played SS, as he had only 1 career inning at the position prior to last night. From 2016-2017 he's primarily played 2B and 3B.

The Brewers' pitchers obviously had a tough night as a group, and the tough night was spread around as 4 of the 5 pitchers used gave up at least one earned run. 2017 23rd round RHP Cam Robinson, who will still be 18 all this season, started the game and pitched fine, allowing an earned run in 2.2 innings of work. He struck out 6 against 2 hits and 2 walks. 2018 34th round LHP Michael Mediavilla made his pro debut and recorded one out to get Robinson out of a jam in the third. RHP Joel (nee Maiker) Pinto made his stateside debut after 3 DSL seasons and got roughed up, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. RHP Tate Budnick made his pro debut after signing an NDFA deal last week, and stranded 2 of Pinto's runners but then two earned runs score later in 2 innings pitched. Peter Strzelecki, also a recent RHP NDFA signee, was actually the person to allow Budnick's runs to score, and then he gave up a run too to finish up the last 2 outs of the game.

AZL Brewers Game Log

5th inning 3 run rally could have been bigger:

AZL Brewers Top of the 5th

Aaron Familia grounds out, third baseman Debby Santana to first baseman Jose Tello.

Francis Florentino singles on a line drive to first baseman Jose Tello.

Jesse Williams singles on a line drive to left fielder Cristian Olivo. Francis Florentino to 2nd.

Micah Bello triples (1) on a ground ball to right fielder Edwin Yon. Francis Florentino scores. Jesse Williams scores.

Nic Pierre walks.

Pitching Change: Jose Valenzuela replaces Orlando Noriega.

Connor McVey singles on a ground ball to third baseman Debby Santana. Micah Bello scores. Nic Pierre to 2nd.

Ernesto Martinez grounds into a double play, second baseman Danielito Remy to first baseman Jose Tello. Connor McVey out at 2nd.

By the way, I have a theory: given that the AZL team has 4 outfielders with really only one more on the way eventually (Joe Gray Jr.) and given that the DSL Brewers have 15 outfielders between the two teams, I think we'll see an outfielder or two transferred from the DSL to the AZL in the next few weeks. Carlos Rodriguez perhaps? Oswel Leones anyone?

When I look back at the hours of time I committed to documenting the entire Australian season for the two new Brewers in our Daily Winter Ball Update Thread, with at least a dozen or more videos, audio interview clips, etc., of Williams and Alex Hall, your post crushes me a bit, have to admit :rolleyes.
