Final: DSL Brewers 18, DSL Cardinals Red 7

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers racked up 18 runs on 17 hits as they thumped the Cardinals, 18-7. Third baseman Luis Silva went 4-for-6 with a double and drove in five runs while catcher Anderson Melendez was on base five times, collecting a walk, a single, a double and a pair of triples. Every Brewer in the starting lineup finished with at least one hit, with infielders Victor Vargas and Daniel Castillo each contributing two hits. Jose Romero got the start on the mound, but didn't make it out of the first inning after giving up three runs. Santiago Elizondo followed and was credited with the win after going four innings, allowing just one run.

DSL Red Sox2 20, DSL Indians/Brewers 6

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

The Brewers co-op team was on the other end of a beat down in their game, committing a whopping eight errors as they were trounced by the Red Sox, 20-6. Most of the ugly belonged to the Indians farmhands, as they committed seven of the eight errors and their pitchers surrendered 15 of the 20 runs. Bryan Connell was on base three times, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. Bryan Dimas added the other hit among Brewers players while Reidy Mercado and Luis Avila each drew two walks.

Man I’ve been a big believer in Webb since he was drafted and we all knew curveball was outstanding. It really is a Sheets like 12-6 bottom drops off hook but the change up really shocked me! It has really come along nicely. Haven’t seen velo news on him this year but if he is still 92-94 & topping out 95-96 like I believe he was coming out. He could be deadly if command is where it needs to be!

It was scouting reports like this when drafted (this from Bob Glover at minorleagueball.com) that really drew the Sheets comps.

“His fastball typically sits in the low-90s and frequently touches 95-96. The pitch features good life and is a key piece in the repertoire that has him second in the SEC in strikeouts.

The pitch that truly distinguishes Webb from his collegiate peers is his curve ball. It is a true 12-6 offering with big break and excellent depth. The curve projects to plus and gives Webb a second pitch capable of missing bats.

Webb also utilizes a solid change up on occasion. It is a distant third pitch in terms of the frequency of its usage, but it shows average potential. There is enough here to hope that he can round out a starter's arsenal in the professional ranks.“

He had TJ surgery after senior year of high school, sat out all 2015 recovering. In 2016 as draft eligible Freshman he was electric but had command issues. Hope the way he has pitched past two months is shat we can expect from him moving forward! Brewers have done great job with a few guys with command issues but great arms recently with both Woodruff & Z. Brown flying through system after pretty awful results in college with command

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

Looks like Burnes pitched 2 innings in relief. Do we think there is anything to this? Possibly setting up a spot start (similar to Peralta) or making a switch to help in the majors this year?

I was wondering the same thing. Pretty odd move if there isn't a bigger reason for it. The Brewers don't necessarily need him as a reliever, though, and it would be a pretty big disappointment to see him moved into a relief role. He hasn't disappointed as a start at all.

I'm sure our crack team of beat journalists will ignore it, though.

Final: AZL Indians1 7, AZL Brewers 3

AZL Brewers Box Score

The Baby Brewers drop their first game of 2018 due to pitching struggles from the returning Carlos Luna (2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1K) and the stateside debut of bonus baby Brayan Salaya (0.2 IPS, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 K). We'll give Luna a pass though, as it was his first in-game action since 8/8/15. Outside of those two, Jorge Ortega made his 2018 debut, as last we saw him was last fall in the AFL, and pitched 2 scoreless. There was another stateside debut on the pitching in front in the form of Jesus Brea, who finally made it to Arizona after 4 years in the DSL. He pitched 2 scoreless as well. Finally, recent NDFA signees Tyler Tungate and Mitch McIntyre both made successful pro debuts.

The offense had its own struggles, too. They managed 6 hits but had 2 walks against 15 strikeouts.

There were three pro debuts:

-The Brewers' third pick made his pro debut: Micah Bello lead off, played CF, and got two singles and a stolen base. He was also picked off once.

-Offseason international signee/native Bahamanian SS Orveo Saint also made his pro debut - he got a single, walked, and was picked off twice.

-Recent NDFA Connor McVey played third base and got on base once, via walk.

There were four stateside debuts:

-2B Edwin Sano played two years in the DSL and made his Arizona debut count with a double and a triple.

-DH (and INF/personal favorite) Aaron Familia and C Luis Avalo also played in the DSL for the last two years; neither earned their way on base.

-RF Anderson Melendez played last year in the DSL. He did not make it on base.

Final note: I'll check it out in a few days, but I do believe there's a possibility that the AZL team is actually older as a group than the Helena team. Which is odd.

AZL Brewers Game Log

The only runs, though it was short-circuited by two pickoffs:

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 5th

Orveo Saint walks.

Connor McVey walks.

With Aaron Familia batting, throwing error by Yeffersson Yannuzzi on the pickoff attempt, Connor McVey to 2nd.

Aaron Familia strikes out swinging. Passed ball by catcher Bryan Lavastida. Connor McVey to 3rd. Aaron Familia to 1st.

Anderson Melendez called out on strikes.

Pitching Change: Hector Figueroa replaces Yeffersson Yannuzzi.

Edwin Sano triples (1) on a line drive to left fielder Ronny Dominguez. Connor McVey scores. Aaron Familia scores.

Micah Bello singles on a ground ball to second baseman Richard Palacios. Edwin Sano scores.

Nic Pierre singles on a line drive to right fielder Johnathan Rodriguez. Micah Bello to 2nd.

With Ernesto Martinez batting, Hector Figueroa picks off Micah Bello at 2nd on throw to Marcos Gonzalez.

In one of those early season not to be taken too seriously statistical eye poppers, Chad McClanahan has an undefined GO/AO ratio. He has nine at bats, five hits, three strikeouts, plus three walks and a HBP, so only once this year has a ball in play turned into an out. Would love to see that guy unlock the potential the scouts saw in him.

Re Burnes, hope everything is ok there. There's an off day soon then a doubleheader Saturday, so maybe they're fiddling with the rotation in preparation? Or perhaps they're keeping an eye on innings? Seems like he's struggled in home games really badly this year so this may just have been a good day for a short successful outing for Burnes...I will be glad to get the AAA team out of CS.

Just my guess, but smells like they're just limiting his innings so he would be an option later in the year if they need a starter.

Also, great to see Carlos Luna back on the bump. A bit of a rough outing, but not surprising since he hasn't pitched in a couple years.

Final: Colorado Springs 10, Salt Lake 9

Sorry for the late post here, that's on me.

I'd trade this 10-9 score for Sunday's Brewers game, but hey, we'll take it, especially with a wild walk-off celebration like this. Sweet moves, Keon Broxton, and poor veteran innocent bystander Andres Blanco gets run over by a Gatorade bath for the ages.
