VIDEO, Wednesday's game --

"SHUCK-Lights 6/13 vs Mississippi: The Shuckers used Brewers' #1 prospect Keston Hiura in a comeback effort to walk off the Mississippi Braves, reducing their magic number to clinch the 1st half South Division title to TWO."

First chance to see Clint Coulter's bases-loaded triple to tie it in the 8th, as Hiura got all the later glory.

Big-time blast from the past: 24-year-old Joshua Torres, eleased by the Crew in spring training 2016, was called up to AAA by the Mets after a strong start to his AAA season. Who knew?

Also in the Las Vegas pen, similarly via a recent bump after good work at AA - RHP Eric Hanhold, dealt to the Mets' last year for Todd Walker

Final: DSL Brewers 5, DSL Tigers1 2

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers went with their "B" lineup today but the group gets an "A" for effort as they scored 5 unanswered runs after falling behind early. The 5-2 victory sent the DSL Crew to their 7th win, which is about as much success as I can recall a Brewers DSL team having in the first 11 games of a season.

Even with Larry Ernesto and Carlos Rodriguez absent from the lineup, 13 hits were produced by the offense with 3 coming from the "other" usual starting outfielder, Oswel Leones. Despite being overshadowed is prospect stature, the 17-year-old Venezuelan corner OF is hitting .345 and his OPS is nearly 900. Yes it's just 35 PAs, but better a great 35 than a crappy 35.

Elsewhere in the lineup, we find Victor Maria, Juan Frias, and Alwinson Valdez each with 2 hits. Valdez was the only Brewer with an extra base hit today, a 9th inning double. Frias also walked twice and threw out a runner at home from right field. The Brewers tried for 7 stolen bases and were successful 4 times. In particular, Leones was 2 for 3.

It took just two pitchers to complete the game for the Brewers. Wilber Perez made his 3rd career start and notched his 2nd career win by logging 5.1 innings of 2 run ball. Leony Rosario went the rest of the way, allowing no runs on 5 hits. Rosario has yet to allow a run in his brief career spanning 6.1 innings and 3 games.

The DSL kiddos' impression of banging your head on a wall:

Series Finale at Burlington Rained Out

Rattlers and Bees will not make up this game

Chris Mehring

BURLINGTON, IA – Thursday’s series finale between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Burlington Bees at Community Field has been rained out. Since this was the last meeting of the first half between the teams, it will not be rescheduled.

The game was called after a strong gust of wind ripped the tarp from the control of the Burlington tarp crew and blew the field cover against the first base dugout and into the stands by taking out the backstop net. The tarp could not be placed on the field before a severe thunderstorm hit the area with heavy rains and made the field unplayable.

Wisconsin (31-35) will head to Kane County to begin a three-game series to end the first half of the season on Friday night.

Final: DSL Pirates1 9, DSL Brewers/Indians 8

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

The Indians' portion of the pitching staff got slapped around again and despite a valiant late rally, the co-opers lose for the 8th time in 11 games. The club has the worst team ERA in the DSL by some margin, at 7.77 after today's debacle.

Two Brewers pitchers appeared in the game. Second year pro Ricardo Velasquez came into the game with 2 runners on and 2 outs in the 5th, got out of that jam and pitched 3 more inning after that. He allowed 1 earned run, though the peripherals weren't great with 4 hits and 3 walks paired with 5 Ks. Sometimes catcher/sometimes pitcher Joel Munoz pitched the 9th inning and worked around a single and an error.

On the offensive side, DH Luis Avila got 3 hits though all were singles and his career ISO dropped a point down to .010. Catcher Roberto Molina had a hit and walked twice. Outfielder Alejandro Marte took an 0-3, which extends his season-opening hitless streak to 13 ABs. He is 3-42 as a professional. I tried hard to work an Alejandro reference into that, but I give up.

DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log

Almost all the way back:

DSL Indians/Brewers Bottom of the 8th

Roberto Molina singles on a ground ball to second baseman Carlos Arroyo.

Alejandro Marte walks. Roberto Molina to 2nd.

With Bryan Connell batting, wild pitch by Lizardy Dicent, Roberto Molina to 3rd. Alejandro Marte to 2nd.

Bryan Connell reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by third baseman Emilson Rosado. Roberto Molina scores. Alejandro Marte to 3rd.

Moises De La Cruz singles on a ground ball to right fielder Rayvi Rodriguez. Alejandro Marte scores. Moises De La Cruz to 2nd. Bryan Connell advances to 3rd, on a fielding error by right fielder Rayvi Rodriguez.

Luis Avila singles on a ground ball to center fielder Daniel Rivero. Bryan Connell scores. Moises De La Cruz to 3rd.

Marlin Made singles on a ground ball to right fielder Rayvi Rodriguez. Luis Avila to 2nd.

Rafael Brito grounds into a force out, shortstop Yoyner Fajardo to second baseman Carlos Arroyo. Moises De La Cruz scores. Luis Avila scores. Marlin Made out at 2nd. Rafael Brito advances to 1st, on a throwing error by second baseman Carlos Arroyo.

Wilfri Peralta doubles (2) on a ground ball to center fielder Daniel Rivero. Rafael Brito to 3rd.

Pitching Change: Wilger Camacho replaces Lizardy Dicent.

Joseph Paulino strikes out swinging.

Roberto Molina walks.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Nehemias Celesten replaces Alejandro Marte.

Nehemias Celesten grounds out, first baseman Ronaldo Paulino to pitcher Wilger Camacho.

Ortiz looks to be on the verge of another nice performance. 2IP, 3K so far.

Gatewood with another homer

Has to work on that .295 OBP and 7% BB rate though.

If Braden Webb can get the BB down he might have as much upside as any pitcher in the system. There's a reason the Brewers drafted him before Burnes.

That 295 obp is still largely due to gatewood's terrible april. WhIle you can't take a month of at bats out of a season and act like it didn't happen, it's at least encouraging it happened early and he's been a much better hitter over the past 7 or so weeks. That's more than a hot streak. I'd agree the 7% bb rate needs to improve, it's been better of late but still not where it needs to be.

Not really - .255 OBP in June over 13 games (2 BB, 19 K)

He had a great May, but April and June so far have not been good. I also normalize numbers for the position they play, and at 1B it definitely needs to get better.

That AA squad is loaded, and even though many prospects there have been in the brewer organizaton awhile, many were drafted out of high school so they are still young for that level.

10 players drafted in the first 2 rounds of the draft, including 6 first rounders. And did they clinch with the Mobile loss?

Grisham has a higher batting average than Ray, Stokes, Erceg, or Gatewood. He’s cut down on Ks, too. And he has a career OBP above .370. And he’s just 21.

It amazes me that many seem to have written him off already. Patience, people.

Trent has slowly and steadily gotten things together since coming off the DL last month. A hit and 2 walks tonight. Let's hope he continues his nice play.
