Final: DSL Phillies White 6, DSL Brewers 4

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers were leading 4-3 going into the 7th inning, but couldn't close it out as they come out on the losing end. Maybe more precisely, their defense couldn't close it out as 2 of the final 3 Phillies' runs were unearned. Three fielding errors, a passed ball and six wild pitches helped to do in the good guys.

17-year-old righty Leoner Colina made his pro debut and had an eventful day. He pitched 5 strong innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and no walks. He struck out 4 and picked off 2 runners, but also managed 4 wild pitches. LF Oswel Leones was the only Brewer with a multi-hit effort and was on base four times with a single, a double, and two walks. The offense did manage to draw 11 walks, but had just 3 hits outside of Leones' efforts. 17-year-old Francis Casado made his pro debut as the DH and had a single in 4 ABs.

No Carlos Rodriquez or Larry Ernesto today for the DSL Brewers, but that's ok because they literally have seven other OFs on the roster.

DSL Brewers Game Log

The go-ahead run scores on a passed ball:

DSL Phillies White Top of the 7th

Arturo De Freitas grounds out, third baseman Alberis Ferrer to first baseman Victor Maria.

Ellian Rondon walks.

Carlos Mendoza grounds into a force out, third baseman Alberis Ferrer to second baseman Luis Silva. Ellian Rondon out at 2nd. Carlos Mendoza to 1st.

Luiggi Mujica singles on a ground ball to third baseman Alberis Ferrer. Carlos Mendoza to 2nd.

Oscar Gonzalez doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Alwinson Valdez. Carlos Mendoza scores. Luiggi Mujica to 3rd.

With Jevi Hernandez batting, passed ball by Jesus Chirinos, Luiggi Mujica scores. Oscar Gonzalez to 3rd.

Jevi Hernandez pops out to shortstop Daniel Castillo.

Final: DSL Dodgers Guerrero 14, DSL Brewers/Indians 4

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

Bad news: the co-opers get blown out. Not as bad news: most of it was done to the Indians' pitchers. The only Brewers' farmhand to pitch was Daniel Acosta, though it wasn't pretty as he walked 4 in a third of an inning and was tagged for two runs. Acosta is a 21-year-old currently playing his third year in the DSL and control has consistently been an issue for him, to put it mildly. Including his no-walk performance in the first game of the season, Acosta has issued at least one walk in all but 5 of his 35 career appearances. I imagine he has a good arm, which is the explanation for why he is still in the Brewers' employ.

Brewer offense was limited as well, with singles from LF Reidy Mercado and C Roberto Molina being the only output.

DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log

A pop out and walks:

DSL Dodgers Guerrero Bottom of the 5th

Pitching Change: Daniel Acosta replaces Sergio Morillo.

Oscar Alvarez pops out to catcher Roberto Molina in foul territory.

Randy Rodriguez walks.

Amin Valdez walks. Randy Rodriguez to 2nd.

Eddys Leonard walks. Randy Rodriguez to 3rd. Amin Valdez to 2nd.

Luis Yan walks. Randy Rodriguez scores. Amin Valdez to 3rd. Eddys Leonard to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Eric Perez replaces Daniel Acosta.

Jenderson Jardines flies out to left fielder Reidy Mercado.

Eynar Machin walks. Amin Valdez scores. Eddys Leonard to 3rd. Luis Yan to 2nd.

Jaime Perez pops out to third baseman Jesus Maestre.

Payton Henry is so fun to watch behind the plate. He's improved himself immensely as a backstop and he is about as animated as they come. Call it youthful exuberance if you want, but the game could use more of it. Check out the Rattlers highlights above and go to the 0:15 mark to see what I mean. Passion adds a lot to the game.

The improvement on defense should not be understated either. The prevailing notion when he was drafted that he'd be forced to go to first base or left field because of his size and throwing mechanics. We are frankly way past that and he's not only sticking at catcher, he's becoming a really good one really quickly.

Final: Fresno 6, Colorado Springs 2

Colorado Springs Box Score

The Sky Sox managed 9 hits but only 2 runners crossed the plate and the strangely offensive-deficient AAA team takes another loss. Dylan Moore (of course) had three of those hits including the only two extra base hits on the day for the Sky Sox, two doubles.

Corbin Burnes gave up 4 runs in 5 innings of work. Has has now allowed 1 more earned run this year than he did for all of 2016 and 2017 combined.

FRESNO TAKES GAME AND SERIES ON THROWBACK THURSDAY

FRESNO, CA. – The Sky Sox dropped the final game of their three-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies Thursday night 6-2.

After taking the field dressed as the Fresno Tacos on Tuesday to kick off this short three-game series, tonight the Grizzlies took the field dressed as the Fresno Raisin Eaters in honor of Throwback Thursday. The Raisin Eaters were Fresno's first PCL team back in 1906, 112 years ago, and named thus because of the raisin industry in Fresno.

Cy Sneed began the night off on the right note for the Raisin Eaters/Grizzlies, retiring three of four Sky Sox batters in the first inning. For the second game in a row, Eric Thames—who is currently on a rehab assignment with Colorado Springs—was the only Sky Sox batter to collect a hit in the top of the first, being stranded on first after hitting a single.

The Grizzlies didn't collect their first hit of the night until the second inning, when A.J. Reed led off the inning with a single. J.D. Davis followed suit with a single of his own, and two outs later Jon Kemmer hit a third single to score Reed and advance Davis to third. Kemmer then stole second, and with Antonio Nunez batting, a wild pitch allowed Davis to score and Kemmer to move up to third base. Nunez then struck out for the third out of the inning, but not before Fresno had taken a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the next inning, the home team tacked on another pair of runs to extend their lead. Drew Ferguson drew his second walk of the evening after taking a free pass in the first inning as well, advancing to third on a Kyle Tucker ground-rule double. Tyler White then hit a sacrifice fly to score Ferguson for both the first out and first run of the inning. Reed followed up with a sacrifice fly of his own to score Tucker and give the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead.

Three scoreless innings later, the Sky Sox broke up the shutout with their first run of the game in the top of the seventh. Dylan Moore led off with a double for the Sky Sox, his 15th of the season, and 8th at the AAA level. Keon Broxton then singled to push Moore over to third, before Shane Opitz grounded into a double play that allowed Moore to score to make it a 4-1 affair.

The Grizzlies responded right away in the bottom of the frame. Ferguson singled to put one on, and with one away White hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to give Fresno a 6-1 lead.

After a scoreless penultimate inning and with the Sky Sox down to their final out in the ninth, Moore hit his second double of the night (16th on the season, 9th at AAA) to give Colorado Springs a little life. Broxton then drew a walk to put two on, and with two on and two out, Opitz hit a single to score Moore and make it 6-2. Jett Bandy then drew a walk to load the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Kyle Wren, who hit a grand slam less than a week ago on June 2 at home against the Iowa Cubs. There would be no grand slam tonight, however, as the rally fell short after Wren struck out for the fifth time this evening, with Fresno taking both the game and the series, two games to one.

The Sky Sox are in the midst of a nine-day, seven-game road trip with two California stops in Fresno and Sacramento, for a three-game series and a four-game series, respectively.

Friday's Preview: In the first game of the four-game series against the River Cats in Raley Field in Sacramento, the Sky Sox are sending righty Aaron Wilkerson to the mound to face fellow right-hander Casey Kelly.

The Platinum Sombrero: The five strikeout game by Kyle Wren Thursday night marks the seventh time in Sky Sox history where a Sky Sox player struck out five times in a game. The other six instances: Luis Medina, September 4th, 1991, home vs. Tucson (Postseason), Billy White, April 22nd, 1996, at Albuquerque, Ben Petrick, June 21st, 2002, home vs. Tucson (F/14), Jason Dewey, July 30th, 2002, home vs. Salt Lake, Brian Buchanan, July 16th, 2005, at Sacramento (F/13), Andrew Susac, June 15th, 2017 at Memphis. The five strikeout game by Wren gives him 202 regular season strikeouts in his career, passing Jim Tatum and Eric Young, Jr. and moving into a tie for 17th place at 201 strikeouts with Derrick Gibson.
