Yankees Acquire International Pool Space From Brewers

Guessing whatever they didn't use on Lun went to the Yankees.

The Brewers get RHP Chad Whitmer, a 10th round pick out of Southern Illinois U (go Salukis!) last year by the Yankees, for some international pool money.

Whitmer pitched in the GCL in 2017, which is the east coast version of the AZL. He posted a gaudy 22:2 K:BB ratio and got a lot of ground balls, though he also yielded a .312 opponent batting average. My guess is he gets assigned to Helena.

You'll learn quite a bit about the Brewers' latest trade acquisition in this feature article from when he was drafted a year ago. Plenty of quotes within.

Making stateside debuts in Maryvale --

18-year-old 2nd year pro RHP Brayan Salaya, a 6'1" Venezuelan, was the starter in all 13 of his DSL appearances last summer. He posted a rough 36 walks and 23 K's (1.70 WHIP) in 47 innings.

***

21-year-old Venezuelan 6'3" RHP Joel Pinto comes stateside after three DSL seasons. Pinto made huge strides in 2017, posting a 1.19 WHIP in 70 innings.

***

How about a 3rd tall Venezuelan RHP? 6'3" Jose Parra turned 21 last March, but was a rookie last summer. Parra posted a 2.60 ERA in 62.1 frames.

***

RH reliever Jesus Brea, a 22-year-old 6'3" Dominican, finally comes to the U.S. after four summers in his native country. Seventy-seven career appearances, just one a start (16 saves).

***

Pattern developing -- Freisis Adames is a 6'3" RHP out of the Dominican. The third-year pro is 21 years old, and has posted impressive numbers and peripherals, as you'll see at that link.

Non-drafted free agent signee Mitch McIntyre's college posted an article with quotes from the 23-year-old Maryvale Brewers RHP.

Includes a confirmation that 16-year-old Chinese pitcher Jolon Lun is in camp.

When asked about the biggest transition from small college baseball to the professional ranks, he stated that "noticing how good younger players are. My catch partner is a 16 year old kid from China who throws harder than I do. It's pretty insane. It just opens your eyes to how talented people are around the world. I've seen talented people at every place I've played at, but never this young."

Both OF Bryan Connell and RHP Johan Dominguez (Xavier Cedeno trade) got rings as champions of the Pioneer League with Great Falls.

Connell went 1-for-20 with ten K's in the Voyagers' regular season, but contributed in the playoffs. Dominguez continued his long scoreless streak from his Brewer days.

Today his agency posts about him, so we get a fleeting video.

Sure had a heck of an age 17 debut season.

Technically, he'll be a "2019" candidate for this thread.
