So far Zack Brown has struck out five of the eight batters he's faced in the firs two innings. Should have only faced six, but an error and a passed ball on a strikeout allowed two extra batters.

Edit: make that seven of eleven batters through three innings, with six of the seven strikeouts swinging

I’m really digging Z. Brown.... when are we going to start giving him more love as a prospect. He may not be Peralta, Ortiz, Burnes.... right now but him & Supek I think are maybe next two

9 K through 4 for Brown, Hiura not his friend at all in the field, with 8 of the 9 strikeouts swinging.

Thoughts of rushing Hiura to the majors should be tempered for defensive purposes.

Pretty sure he made his first professional error tonight. I’ll chalk it up to an off night so far.

Final: DSL Brewers 12, DSL Cubs2 8

The Brewers scored multiple runs in five different innings, slugging their way past the Cubs by a score of 12-8. Wilmy DeJesus got the start and went five innings, allowing four runs. Dantel Ramirez followed and picked up his second win of the year already, despite allowing four runs over his 2.2 innings of work. 22-year-old Johan Dominguez worked the final inning and a third without allowing a run.

DSL Brewers Box Score

16-year-old catcher Jesus Chirinos and 17-year-old outfielder Juan Frias each clubbed their first home runs, while Carlos Rodriguez collected his third consecutive two-hit game. Third baseman Victor Maria singled, drew a pair of walks and stole two bases. 17-year-old Dominican Jeicor Cristian made his pro debut and picked up two hits in five at-bats while second baseman Victor Vargas drew three walks and scored three runs in his first professional game. Larry Ernesto, serving as the designated hitter, picked up his first base hit and drove in the first two runs of his career.

Final: DSL Rays2 13, DSL Indians/Brewers 15

The Brewers co-op team scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third and it was still barely enough as the Rays scored 11 runs over the final five innings in a wild contest. 17-year-old Kleiber Bordones made his first pro start and went three innings, allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out four. Rafael Brito, who tossed one inning last season, but worked mostly at third and first base, pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief, while Vitor Watanabe, a 17-year-old out of Brazil, pitched the final 1.2 innings and was credited with the save.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Watanabe also saw time in the outfield for the Brewers today, going 0-for-1 but drawing a walk. 17-year-old Jose Arteaga, listed as a shortstop, entered the game for his pro debut as a replacement in right field when Watanabe moved to the mound in the eighth. Bryan Dimas reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks while Bryan Connell added a double, a walk and drove in a pair of runs.

Brown may just be a slower starter. His first 4-5 starts last & this year have had some struggles but come start 6 he mostly just deals. He was great in June & July for T-Rats, stellar in Carolina in August, & since May started (7 starts) he has be pretty incredible (only one blemish)

Brewers were aggressive & we are seeing why!

Really, the only thing that has changed for Brown is that he has kept the ball in the park better. A lot of his stats through those first five starts were pretty good, he just had given up six home runs. He has given up one since, and his ERA has caught up with his WHIP, K/9 and K/BB. Nice to see him being probably one of the top five pitchers in the Southern League thus far.

Stokes is for real...

It's between him and Roegner for #1 on my next top 25 ballot. Plus,. I think the Crew drafted two more like him in Micah Bello and Arbert Cipion.

I'm cautiously optimistic with Stokes. What tempers my enthusiasm is that Gindl outperformed him at every age/level and wasn't able to carve out a big league role. I was a huge Gindl fan

Down East 6, Carolina 4

Feliciano Homers in Series Opening 6-4 Loss to Down East

Mario Feliciano and Joantgel Segovia had solid home debuts in Carolina's 6-4 loss to Down East

cut.jpeg

That picture above is not Keston Hiura but Mario Feliciano. He's just wearing the same number. Maybe 6 is a lucky number. Feliciano had two hits including a home run. Joantgel Segovia also had two hits on the night. He also misplayed a ball in left field that helped fuel a 3 run first by the Wood Ducks.

Cam Roegner had another off night. He didn't seem to be getting the outside corner and missed too many over the plate. He and Jonathan Hernandez, the Wood Duck starter were 1 and 2 in ERA coming into the game and both struggled.

Cam Roegner 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Joantgel Segovia 2-3, 3B, BB

Dallas Carroll 2-4

Mario Feliciano 2-4, HR, 3 RBI

Final: Fresno 1, Colorado Springs 0

The only online home for this recap as of this morning --

GRIZZLIES END SHUTOUT WITH WALK-OFF TO WIN GAME ONE 1-0

FRESNO, CA – The Sky Sox began their road trip by dropping a heartbreaker to the Fresno Grizzlies 1-0 Tuesday night. With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth in a 0-0 tie ballgame, the Grizzlies hit a soft infield grounder to break up the shutout and walk-off game one of this three-game set.

In what would turn out to be a pitcher's duel with extraordinarily little offense, the Sky Sox came out swinging in the top of the first. Kyle Wren hit a single in the very first at-bat of the game for Colorado Springs, advancing to second on a Jacob Nottingham single. Tonight marked Nottingham's first game back with the Sky Sox since May 11, and his first hit since May 10 after an extended stay on the disabled list. Josh James—Fresno's starter tonight—recorded two strikeouts to get out of the top of the first, giving the home team their first turn at the plate.

The Fresno Grizzlies took the field dressed in their now-renowned Fresno Tacos jerseys tonight, adding a little visual flavor to the Tuesday night contest.

Freddy Peralta, who just turned 22 years old yesterday (June 4, 1996), came out dealing. He retired the first four batters he faced, before giving up a pair of walks to Jack Mayfield and Garrett Stubbs in the second inning for Fresno's first baserunners of the game. Two strikeouts later, however, Peralta was safely out of the inning.

Keon Broxton hit a two-out single in the top of the third inning, but that would be the last hit James would allow all night.

Peralta wouldn't allow another baserunner until the fifth inning, when he gave up his third walk of the night, this time to Jon Kemmer on four pitches.

Game one of both this series and this road trip proved to be a pitching masterpiece, as both starters had phenomenal starts and pitched late into the game. Through five innings of baseball, the two starters had combined for 16 total strikeouts, with Fresno accumulating three walks, Colorado Springs collecting three hits, and neither team being able to score through those five frames.

In fact, Peralta ended up taking a no-hit bid into the seventh inning for the Sky Sox, at which point it was broken up by a Mayfield single. At the time of the no-hitter being broken up, Peralta had surrendered just three walks with nine strikeouts through 6.1 innings, having thrown 87 pitches, 53 of which were strikes. Opposite him, James threw seven shutout innings of baseball, striking out 13 Sky Sox batters and walking just one.

With the game still tied at 0-0, Tyler White led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double off of Sky Sox reliever Jorge Lopez. A.J. Reed was then hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and second, still with no outs. Mayfield then laid down a sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning to advance both runners and put the winning run 90 feet from home, with White becoming the first baserunner of the entire game to reach third base. With first base now open, Lopez intentionally walked Stubbs to set up a potential double play, but in the next at-bat Kemmer hit a soft comebacker that bounced off of Lopez's glove, allowing White to score and Fresno to walk off 1-0 to take game one of this series.

The Sky Sox are in the midst of a nine-day, seven-game road trip with two California stops in Fresno and Sacramento, for a three-game series and a four-game series, respectively.

Tomorrow's Preview: In the second game of the three-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Adrian Houser to the mound to face righty Brock Dykxhoorn.

Decent Company: The 13 strikeouts by Fresno's Josh James Tuesday night marks the 8th time an opposing pitcher has struck out at least 13 Sky Sox batters in a game, all done on the road. The last time that it was accomplished was by Oklahoma City's Jose DeLeon on August 28th, 2016 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (13 K in 7 IP). Tuesday night wasn't even the single-game high for a Fresno pitcher against the Sky Sox, as Fresno's Tim Lincecum struck out 14 Sky Sox batters in 6 IP in a game in Fresno on April 29th, 2007.

Nail-biters: Tuesday night was only the second time that the Sky Sox and Fresno Grizzlies completed in a game with a final score of 1-0. The other instance came on May 26th, 2012 in Fresno, with the Grizzlies also winning that game, 1-0.

Guess Who's Back: Tuesday night marked Jacob Nottingham's first game back with the Sky Sox since May 11, and his first hit since May 10 after an extended stay on the disabled list. Nottingham went 2-for-4 in the game, while also stealing a base.

Slam Knowledge: During the last Sky Sox visit to Fresno in 2016, Colorado Springs hit three grand slams in the series, marking the first time they ever met the feat. Both Will Middlebrooks and Andy Wilkins hit grand slams in a 17-4 win on May 27, 2016, and Michael Reed hit the third of the series on May 30, 2016 in a game which ended in a 6-6 tie. On Saturday night, Kyle Wren knocked the first grand slam for the Sky Sox in 2018 in the 8th inning. It marked only the fourth time a Sky Sox batter hit a grand slam home run against an Iowa pitcher and the first time in 14 years. The last time it happened was on April 25th, 2004 at Principal Park (Game 2) when Brad Hawpe hit a 4th inning grand slam off of Jon Leicester. The Sky Sox won 6-4.

May 30, 2016: The last time the Sky Sox played at Chukchansi Park prior to Tuesday night was on May 30, 2016. On this day, the start time was moved up three hours to 11 a.m. PST with a 2:30 pm travel curfew due to a flight that was scheduled to fly out of San Francisco due to poor flight options out of Fresno the next day. The final game on May 30 was called after 10 innings at 2:31 pm, ending in a 6-6 tie.
