Final: Pensacola 5, Biloxi 1

Seventh Inning the Difference in Pensacola

Luis Ortiz Tosses Four Scoreless Against Blue Wahoos

By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers

cut.JPG

Biloxi Box Score

Luis Ortiz good. Cody Ponce bad. Shucker hitters bad. Shuckers lose 5-1.

Ortiz had a great game - allowing only one hit over four innings. Unfortunately, Ponce decided to implode in the 7th innings, giving up - in this order - a single, a hit batsman, a walk, a double, a wild pitch, a triple and a sacrifice fly.

The crazy thing is that - other than the 7th inning - Pensacola had only one hit the entire game.

Shucker batters managed only five hits and a run, going 1-8 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight.

Batting

Jake Hager: 1-3, BB, SB

Trent Grisham: 1-3, 2B, BB

Pitching

Luis Ortiz: 4.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 4K

Cody Ponce: 4.0 IP, 3 hits, 5 ER, 2BB, 2K

Notes

Corey Ray has gone 1-17 with nine strikeouts over his last five games.

DSL Indians/Brewers 2, DSL Rangers1 10

The Rangers scored five runs in the first two innings and that proved to be more than enough as they rolled over the co-op Brewers by a score of 10-2.

DSL Indians/Brewers Box Score

Leadoff hitter Luis Avila had the lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. The 19-year-old Venezuelan scored a run, drove in another and stole a base. 19-year-old Panamanian outfielder Bryan Connell went 1-for-4. 18-year-old Bryan Dimas, also from Panama, was the only other Brewers position player to see action, going 0-for-2 with a base on balls. 18-year-old right-hander Ricardo Velasquez was the only Milwaukee pitcher used on Monday, giving up one unearned run on three hits over 2.2 innings.

DSL Indians/Brewers Game Log

DSL Rangers2 10, DSL Brewers 5

The Brewers scored three runs in the fifth to tie up the game, but it didn't last long, as the Rangers plated four in the top of the seventh to help double up the Brewers, 10-5.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Carlos Rodriguez was in the leadoff spot for the Brewers and had his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Larry Ernesto is still looking for his first hit as a pro after going 0-for-4, but he did draw his first walk. Catcher Andres Melendes had two hits and drove in two runs before giving way to Farlyn Manon, who also added a hit and an RBI in what was his professional debut. 18-year-old Dominican Victor Maria has two hits, as did 17-year-old outfielder Alberis Ferrer. 17-year-old Daniel Castillo also reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk. Two other players made their pro debuts on Monday with Venezuelan outfielder Oswel Leones starting in right field before being replaced by Dominican Juan Frias. Leones went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while Frias struck out as a pinch-hitter in his lone at-bat. 20-year-old Henry Medina, in his third year in the DSL, got the start and went 3.1 innings, allowing three runs. The three pitchers that followed were all making their first DSL appearance with Santiago Elizondo going 2.2 innings and allowing one run. Joandris Tolentino got roughed up for four runs, three earned, over an inning of work and Claudio Mota surrendered two runs over the final two frames.
