FIU second baseman Eddie Silva signed a free agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. Silva becomes the second Panther this season to join the pro ranks after FIU pitcher Andres Nunez was drafted by the Kansas City Royals earlier this month.

"What a great and deserving opportunity for Eddie," said FIU head coach Mervyl Melendez. "He not only had a great year for our team but he was able to be a true leader for a young team. We wish Eddie much success throughout his professional baseball career."

Silva had his finest season in an FIU uniform in 2018. The redshirt junior hit a team-leading 16 home runs and had a team-leading 48 RBI while batting .321. Silva also led the Panthers with a .686 slugging percentage.

Silva, who was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, hit the most home runs in Conference USA this season along with Southern Miss's Matt Wallner, who also went deep 16 times. Silva was second in the league in slugging.

The 16 home runs hit by Silva tied for the sixth most in a single FIU baseball season. Silva tied Hiram Silfa, who hit 16 home runs in 1999.

Earlier this season Silva was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after hitting .600 with four home runs and 12 RBI during the week of April 16-22. He was also honored as Conference USA's Hitter of the Week.

From Prospects1500, a somewhat confusing comment on 20th rounder Joey Matulovich:

Joey Matulovich, Wareham (2019 Draft) A Junior from Cal Berkeley, the tall righthander was a swing man between the pen and the rotation, tossing Cal’s lone complete game last season. He was selected in the 20th round of last June’s draft by the Brewers, but instead chose to return to school. He was relegated to the Golden Bears pen during the season but performed well, with an ERA of 2.31 over 27.1 pen innings, striking out 27 batters in the process. In his four appearances on the Cape, Matulovich has been stellar, collecting a 0.50 ERA, with 17 Ks to 5 walks over 18 innings for the Gatemen. Matulovich mixes a fastball, breaking ball, and changeup. The fastball sits low 90’s with the breaking ball in the mid-80s, and a changeup that sits 78-81.

Matulovich was selected in *this* June's draft (Austin Rubick was last year's 20th rounder) so I think the writer may have the timeline wrong, and I don't believe the Matulovich has already chosen to return to Cal, but I am attempting to clarify.

Reese Olson signs with the Brewers. $440k signing bonus. That doesn’t seem to bode well for signing Turang.

Why not? we need Turang's bonus pool plus excess allowance to allow us to sign other players. Without Turang, aren't we now looking at forfeiting draft picks?

Didn’t we save almost 700k from all the underslot deals? If we don’t sign Turang, then we’d just lose his slot, no?

I didn’t necessarily agree that Cabell’s FSU commitment meant he wasn’t signing, just that he didn’t like his leverage as the deadline approached. Olson’s signing probably does put the nail in my hopes of getting Cabell though; but then again, I had given up hope on Blake Lillis and LG Castillo but the Brewers got those deals done so I guess I’ll have to wait it out. Hopefully they can get Daniel Davis done.

The Brewers would lose the full slot value of the 21st overall pick ($3,013,600) plus the 5% overage they are allowed before hitting a draft pick penalty, which is up to an additional $150,680.

Might very well be the opposite - the Brewers know exactly what they have left to work with.

Yeah, I assume that they wouldn't sign Olsen yet if there were even a small chance that it would affect their ability to sign Turang. Either they are close and know they won't need that money, or they are punting and moving to use their remaining pool minus Turang's slot as effectively as possible. We'll know soon...

I hope it’s the former, but I have a bad feeling that it’s the latter.

Anything new on Iverson?

Love the enthusiasm, but as a longtime follower of the forums, you might realize the need for "anything new?" posts is somewhat unnecessary. If there was "anything new", someone would present it here in short order ;).
