2018 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5 [7/5 -- 1st rounder Turang signs]

Why do the brewers never draft pitching early? I do not get it...

its how the cubs got to where they are. much less riskier to go after a bat than an arm. Im OK with this. Haven't had a pitcher work out in the first round since Jeffress.

And as a former scout himself, Blood has strong opinions. His strongest about the 2018 draft class is that Turang appears likely to be picked significantly lower than he should be on the basis of a less-than-expected senior season. Turang was seen as a likely top five pick coming into the year. Now, he's expected to fall into the second half of the first round.

“I think part of it Turang’s performance this spring has not been as remarkable as it was the two years before when he was the best amateur hitter in the country,” Blood said. “When scouts went in to see him this year, they were holding him to a 1-1 standard. When they didn’t necessarily see that, they almost double penalized him for it.

“It’s similar to what happens when a pop-up player outperforms what is expected of him and gets some extra helium. A lot of it is just human psychology. And at the end of the day, Brice is one of the most polished and pro-ready hitters in this draft, who also happens to be an above-average defensive shortstop.”

“I think it’s just basic human psychology more than a it is a trend,” Blood said. “Those who have seen (Turang) succeed over the past couple of years on the big stage against the best competition know what kind of player he is, and will most likely have evaluated him higher than those who haven’t.”

Great read! Makes a lot of sense though. India was good not stellar high school player. Played well, not great his first two years at Florida & then blew up this year! Helium was way up on him. Turang was stellar & maybe best in country since he was a sophomore. But when people come to see you expecting to see most elite talent in country & you are play good but not stellar all of a sudden, they knock you. You have that disappointed factor in there.

Seems like a smarter bet to take a guy who has great skills and can play SS while hoping he develops power, as opposed to taking an elite athlete while hoping he learns how to play baseball. :laughing

Very well said.

while that's often true, that raw athlete was Lorenzo Cain

Cain was also a 17th round draft pick, not a 1st

bleacher report gave the pick an A- only because the brewers have Arcia which is silly because you can never have enough talent up the middle and by the time Turang is ready to be called up, Arcia will be hitting the end of his arby years and the brewers can make a decision.

Cain was back in the great draft & follow days as well. Take a chance on late teen raw talents & see if they grow

Also dumb because Arcia still has to show he can give enough with the bat to be player we hope he is. By time Turang is ready, who knows where Arcia’s development with bat will be. Love Arcia & his defense but future is never guaranteed.

The kids going to LSU. The Brewers simply save the cash for a better 2nd thru 6th round pick to over pay on.

If he didn’t sign they would just lose the entire slot value allotted to the pick.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

much too early to tell. they could pay slightly overslot and draft below slot with 7-10. seems like he was drafted where he was supposed to, so I am not sure why he would go to college.

Why do people state predictions like they are facts? Maybe toss on an "I believe" or "I think" before spouting a pure unfounded prediction. A kid just drafted 21st likely isn't going to spurn the Brewers for college.

#Brewers know Brice Turang very well. He played on their Area Codes team in Calif. They know him as a player and a person. Couldn't wait to call his name at No. 21. For second year in a row, scout Wynn Pelzer's guy goes in first round. Regional supervisor Josh Belovsky also in.

Unlikely, the Brewers wouldn't have drafted him if they thought he wouldn't sign. The Brewers also lose all of the money if they don't sign him and can't allocate it to anyone else.

Internet prospect evaluators acting like Beer was a joke were so full of it. Clearly MLB teams (and a very well run team at that) trust the bat.

I'm pouring one out to what could have been, Seth... :(
