Rickie Signed!

Recommended Posts

Even if the terms aren't the most advantageous, I think it reflects positively on both the Brewers and Weeks to get a deal done before the other 3 of the top 4. I won't read into it too much, other than to say the sooner he begins playing pro ball, the sooner he has a chance of making it to the bigs and contributing.

I think we all would appreciate an explaination as to how the majorleague deal he signed affects how many years we can have him before he's a free agent. Apparently NOT 6 years.

I can only hope that he idn't that good, so that we aren't all very upset when we can't afford him in 4 years, or whatever.

luzinski.....congrats on the stupidest post of the week.

This is a great day in Brewer history. Weeks is a great addition and is cause for great excitement in Brewerland.

Big time props to the boys on the ESPN board who broke this story yesterday and nailed it. Who are those guys anyway? The seriously have the inside scoop. We need more from them.

Just because you don't like what I write about doesn't make it stupid, just negative http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I didn't mean for the post to come accross as negative as it may have. Apparently he has to be up to the bigs by 2006. Sorry, but that does concern me a bit. He'll be in Huntsville next year, and Indionapolis the year after.

Hopefully he's ready by then, cus he'll have to be.

Free agency not affected at all, neither is arby, for that matter. He's still eligible for arby after 3 years of ML service time, or as a Super 2, and a FA after 6 years of service time.

The only difference is he has a major league deal, rather than a pact of renewable minor league deals, and, his salary for the first few years is already known.

OK, now, sifting through everything here, I'm trying to figure out exactly what the ML contract means here. Anyone care to explain? Does it affect arby time or free agency at all? I should know this, but I don't, and I'm too lazy to look, and I'm sure someone here knows anyhow.

It means he must be on the 40 man roster, and he starts burning option years right away. Since he is signing this late in the season, he will actually get an additional option year, so he will have 4 total.

endaround....

from what I can tell the ESPN message board had the info WAYYY before MJS website had anything. I checked when I heard the news and MJS didnt have squat.

Ask square...he seemed to get his info from the ESPN board and brought it to brewerfan.

It doesn't affect free agency or arbitration at all. those are dependent on when he actually reaches the major leagues. But by signing a major league contract, it means he has a much shorter time to make the big league club then most prospects. Once his option years are up, if he isn't on the 25 man roster, we would have to expose him to waivers.

At least, the way it sounds is Rickie will be in Arizona for a couple of starts and will make his way to Beloit. Just so happens that time will come around when Milwaukee will get a chance to see the more distant future, compared to the least distant future

I must say, I've waited a loooong time to be able to say that, because if talent in the minors fails, we still have something to back up a good majority of our failures for a change.

From our brief meeting with him last night, Rickie is an extremely nice & gratious young man, and seems rather humble as well. His parents were extremely appreciative of our well wishes. What an exciting day, as I was incredibly honored to meet the young man the day he signed his professional contract.

And, he's ripped. His athleticism combined with his work ethic is going to serve him well.

From all the scouting reports I've read, he was the closest to major league ready of anyone drafted. If that's the case then 2006 isn't asking too much.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I'll add to what Patrick said about Rickie.

Physically, he's a lot bigger than I thought he'd be. I think he's going to hit for more power than I thought he would. Its pretty easy to see where all those tool come from.

Its real hard to say you know someone from meeting them once, but he made a great first impression. He was humble, and very appreciative of the well wishes, well spoken, and very excited. For him to take some time to speak with us, with all the things going on yesterday, is one of my all-time great baseball moments.

I can't wait to see him in action in Beloit.

Crew,

Patrick has the Brewerfan.com shirts, w/ .net patches. I've purchased all my shirts thru him, including the one that I gave to Ulice.

In the Weeks photo, from L-R, we have:

Bill Batterman (batman), Brian Kapellusch (squarepusher), Rickie, Chris Hawkinson (me) and Patrick Ebert (colbyjack).
