Final: Memphis 3, Colorado Springs 2

SKY SOX DROP SERIES FINALE IN MEMPHIS 3-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Sky Sox road struggles continued into the final game of their Nashville trip, falling for a fourth straight game to the Redbirds Tuesday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The finale loss capped off a seven-loss road trip in nine games for Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox drop to a 27-23 overall record in the American North Division.

Memphis got the day going in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Following Oscar Mercado's leadoff walk and one-out stolen base to get into scoring position, Patrick Wisdom delivered a single to centerfield to give the Redbirds to early lead.

In the fourth, Colorado Springs got back into the game when first-baseman Ji-Man Choi struck a one-out double to right field. After Christian Bethancourt's single put runners on the corners with one out, outfielder Brett Phillips came through with a sacrifice fly ball to right field, marking his ninth RBI of 2018, to tie the game at 1-1.

With the momentum, the Sky Sox went ahead with a solo run in the sixth inning sparked by back-to-back singles to start the inning by Orlando Arcia and Choi. The run was brought in on a fielding error on Wisdom at third base batted by Bethancourt to plate Arcia, putting Colorado Springs up 2-1.

However, in the bottom half of the frame, Memphis found another offensive rhythm. With one out, Wisdom, Luke Voit, and Wilfredo Tovar collected consecutive singles to tie the game at 2-2. After a fielder's choice groundout kept runners on the corners with two outs, a wild pitch would send home the go-ahead and final run of the contest for the Redbirds, making it a 3-2 contest.

The Sky Sox stranded three runners throughout the final three innings, finishing 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Sky Sox starter Alec Asher finished after five and one-third innings of six-hit, three-run ball with two walks and two strikeouts. Relievers Mike Zagurski, Jon Perrin and Michael Brady combined for the final two and two-thirds innings while combining to allow just one hit.

The Sky Sox head back home for a five-game homestand starting tomorrow, May 30 against the Iowa Cubs.

Tomorrow's Preview: In the first game of the five-game set against the Iowa Cubs at Security Service Field, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Freddy Peralta to the mound to face fellow righty Jen-Ho Tseng. In Peralta's last outing on May 24 at First Tennessee Park against the Sounds, he notched his sixth win while allowing no runs and just three hits through five frames with eight strikeouts. Oppositely, Tseng notched his second win of 2018 in his last outing against New Orleans on May 25.

Road Troubles: The Sky Sox dropped their fifth series of the season after their loss to Memphis Monday afternoon. With the fourth consecutive loss on Tuesday, the Sky Sox finished their road trip going 2-7 over nine games in Nashville and Memphis. The team now totals six series wins, five series losses, and two series ties.

Halted at Four, Again: The Sky Sox were held to four hits three times throughout the five-game series with Memphis on Saturday night, Monday afternoon, and Tuesday afternoon at AutoZone Park. Before the series, the last time Colorado Springs was held to four hits was by Oklahoma City at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on May 5. The first time the Sky Sox marked the four-hit low came on April 7 at Omaha in game one of the doubleheader.

Run Differential: Over the Sky Sox last 12 games, opponents have outscored the Colorado Springs squad 55-26. Over the 12`-game stretch, the Sky Sox have averaged 2.16 runs per game.

This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox head into a five-game homestand beginning tomorrow, May 30 against the Iowa Cubs. After the five games at home, they will hit the road again for sevens game to take on Pacific Conference teams, the Fresno Grizzlies and Sacramento River Cats.

Bradin Webb has really figure things out in his last 5 starts (All in May). After awful April he is showing that talent we were excited about in the “Ben Sheets Lite” pitcher

Despite the walks, I thought he was *this* close to putting it all together the last few weeks. He sure did today!

Jankins... not so much.

Strikeout numbers looking good but the walks remind me nothing of Sheeter. Control has been erratic.

Late Lead Slips Away to Kernels

Wisconsin drops 6-5 decision after leading 5-2

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers let one get away on Tuesday night. The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat the Rattlers 6-5 in game one of a three-game series at Perfect Game Field on Tuesday night.

The Timber Rattlers (23-29) scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead. Gilbert Lara started the inning with a single. Trever Morrison, in his first game since April 8, followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Nick Roscetti put the Rattlers up with an RBI single to score Lara. Then, Demi Orimoloye tripled to right to score both runners for a 3-0 lead.

The Kernels (24-25) answered with two runs on four straight hits to start their half of the third inning. Three straight singles by Jordan Gore, Jacob Pearson, and Royce Lewis opened the frame. Alex Kirilloff followed with a two-run double to pull the Kernels to within a run and put the tying and lead runs in scoring position with no outs.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Alec Bettinger rebounded to retire the next three batters without allowing a run and kept the Rattlers up 3-2. Bettinger would retire the final twelve batters he faced in the game as he worked six frames for the fifth consecutive time as a starter.

The offense added to the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth inning. In the fourth, Morrison singled with two outs to drive in KJ Harrison from third. In the fifth, Orimoloye hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo homer to left, and the Rattlers had a 5-2 lead.

Wisconsin had a chance to add to their lead in the top of the sixth. Zach Clark tripled to start the inning. Lara was next and he hit a high chopper near third. Clark tried to get back to the bag, but he was tagged out by the third baseman, who threw to first in time to get Lara for the double play. Morrison was next and he singled for the tenth hit of the night for the Rattlers. That drove Kernels starter Bailey Ober out of the game. Reliever Melvi Acosta entered the game and got the final out of the inning.

Bettinger, who had a chance at his fifth straight win, gave way to reliever Gabe Friese to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Friese hit the first batter he faced and walked the third batter he faced, but had two outs and a full count on Lewis with two outs. Lewis, the #1 pick of the 2017 draft, doubled to right and both runners scored to cut the Rattlers lead back to one run. Then, Kirilloff singled to send Lewis home with the tying run.

Jean Carlos Arias started the Kernels eighth inning with a single, stole second, and went to third on a ground out. Robby Rinn drove in Arias with a double to left and the Kernels had a 6-5 lead.

Acosta closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He retired all ten Rattlers he faced in the game to pick up his first win of the season.

Wisconsin is 3-6 on the first nine games of this eleven-game road trip. The Rattlers have had the lead into at least the seventh inning in three of the losses.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon. Bowden Francis (1-2, 4.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has named Blayne Enlow (0-1, 3.28) as their starter. Game time at Perfect Game Field is 12:05pm.
