Good day again for Gatewood, starting to (I hope) turn a corner. A little uneven, but overall successful AA debut for Supak. Ray's strikeout in the 9th was a 13 pitch AB in which he fouled off 9 pitches.

Final: Kane County 8, Wisconsin 3

Kane County Pulls Away Late to Beat Rattlers

Cougars top Wisconsin 8-3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

cut.jpg

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored six times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to blow open a close game with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Sunday night at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Cougars took a 2-0 lead and turned it into an 8-0 advantage on their way to an 8-3 victory over the Rattlers.

Wisconsin (22-28) loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning against Kane County starting pitcher Jeff Bain, but Pat McInerney's line drive was right at shortstop Jasrado Chisholm and the ball was caught for the final out of the inning.

Eduardo Diaz gave the Cougars (25-21) a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second inning. Tim Susnara followed with a double. Then, Joey Rose drove in Susnara with a single and Kane County was up 2-0.

The Rattlers missed out on opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings against Bain. In the fourth, McInerney and Zach Clark both singled with one out, but they were left stranded as Bain retired the next two batters. In the fifth, Joantgel

Segovia doubled to start the inning, but the inning ended with Segovia standing on third base.

Bain left the game after giving up a two-out single to Clark in the sixth inning. He walked two, scattered six hits, and struck out four without allowing a run.

Devin Hairston walked to start the Wisconsin seventh inning against reliever Erbert Gonzalez, but Gonzalez struck out the next three batters to send the game to the stretch with Kane County still up 2-0.

Wisconsin reliever Wilfred Salaman made his Timber Rattlers debut by entering the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. He gave up hits to the first two batters he faced, but got out of the inning without allowing a run. Salaman was not as lucky in the seventh.

The first two Kane County batters after the stretch drew walks against Salaman. But, a strikeout and a force play at second gave Salaman a chance to escape the inning. They did not escape as Kane County strung together six straight two-out hits to score six runs and put the game out of reach.

Yoel Yanqui and Renae Martinez had back-to-back RBI singles to score the first two runs of the inning and drive Salaman from the game.

Yan Sanchez greeted reliever Jose Cuas with a two-run single. Diaz followed with an RBI double. Susnara was next and he singled to score Diaz and it was 8-0 in favor of Kane County.

Rose, who started the inning with a walk, singled for the final hit of the sequence before Cuas got the final out of the inning.

The Rattlers avoided the shutout with a three-run home run by Segovia in the top of the ninth inning. Wisconsin stranded ten runners on base and finished the game 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Wisconsin is 0-6 against Kane County this season.

The final game of the four-game series at Northwestern Medicine Field is Monday afternoon. Christian Taugner (0-4, 4.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Mack Lemieux (1-3, 5.13) as their starter. Game time on Memorial Day is 1:00pm.

Wisconsin Box Score

Joantgel Segovia hit his third career home run (HRs are old hat now for Joantgel) and added a double for good measure but the Rattlers ended up getting squished.

Carlos Herrera has exhibited major control problems this year. Love the arm angle, but it'll take work for that angle to work as a starter. That said, he made his best start this year, allowing 2 runs over 5 innings, but with only one walk vs. 6 strike outs. Wilfred Salaman, making his T-Rats debut, picked off about a dozen guys last year for the AZL Brewers but he did not manage a pick-off today, and got hit around a bit.

Final: Memphis 5, Colorado Springs 0

SKY SOX SHUT OUT FOR SECOND TIME IN AS MANY NIGHTS

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Sky Sox dropped their second game in a row to the Redbirds Sunday night 5-0 to fall to 2-1 in this series versus Memphis. After not having been shut out all season prior to last night, the Sky Sox have now been shut out two nights in a row, being held to only 10 hits throughout the last 18 innings.

After two and a half fairly quiet innings to start game three of this five-game series, the home team exploded into action in the bottom of the third. Austin Gomber—the starting pitcher for the Redbirds tonight—kicked off the inning with a leadoff single to help his own cause, but in the next at-bat Oscar Mercado hit into a double play that nearly stifled what would turn out to be a big inning for Memphis. Rangel Ravelo then hit a two-out solo homer for the first score of the game, and for his second home run against the Sky Sox in two nights. Patrick Wisdom, who also hit a homer last night, followed Ravelo's dinger with a line drive single. Alex Mejia then singled to put two on for Andrew Knizner, who promptly hit an RBI double on the first pitch he saw to score Wisdom and make it 2-0. Knizner, who had started this series going 0-for-5, would end up making up for it tonight with a three-for-four game with both a run and an RBI. Wilfredo Tovar then drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases for Ramon Urias, who singled to score Mejia and Knizner to extend Memphis' lead to 4-0.

After three more scoreless innings from both clubs, the Redbirds tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh. Colorado Springs went three up and three down in the top of the inning, before Ravelo got the Redbirds offense moving in the bottom half of the frame with a one-out triple. Wisdom hit a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to score Ravelo from third for his first RBI of the evening, furthering the scoring gap to give Memphis a 5-0 lead.

The Sky Sox, who had not been shut out all season prior to the shutout last night at the hands of Memphis starter Dakota Hudson, remained scoreless through all nine innings of Sunday night's game, making 18 scoreless innings in a row for the Sky Sox with only 10 total hits in that span.

The Sky Sox head into the fourth of five games against the Memphis Redbirds tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM Central at AutoZone Park. The Sky Sox head back home for a five-game homestand beginning May 30 against the Iowa Cubs.

Tomorrow's Expectation: In the fourth game of the five-game set against the Memphis Redbirds, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Brandon Woodruff to the mound to face fellow righty Ryan Helsley for the Redbirds.

Blanked: After marking their third team shutout Thursday night in the final game in Nashville, the Sky Sox powerhouse offense was finally put to a stop for the first time Saturday night, coming 48 games in. The shutout loss on Saturday was in game 48, the fourth latest to start a season before getting shutout. The longest to start a season was game number 92 in the 2008 season. Memphis starter Dakota Hudson, who notched the win at Security Service Field in his last start against the Sky Sox, was brilliant Saturday night at AutoZone Park, tossing eight shutout, four-hit innings with nine strikeouts. In comparison, in 2017, the first time the Sky Sox were shutout was on May 19 when Albuquerque beat Colorado Springs 5-0. The Sky Sox were shut out again Sunday night after another excellent outing from the Redbirds pitching staff, who only allowed six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in the combined shutout. The last time the Sky Sox were shut out in back-to-back nine inning games was June 11th and 12th, 2016, both at Memphis. This marked only the fourth time the Sky Sox have been shut out in back-to-back nine inning games. The others: 4/27-28/2006 at Las Vegas (7-0, 5-0), 7/22-23/2007 at Fresno (2-0, 4-0), and 6/11-12/2016 at Memphis (2-0, 5-0).

Taking On Memphis: In seven games played against the Redbirds so far this season, the Sky Sox are 2-5 after having taken game one at home 10-5 on May 17 but dropping the next three with a run differential of 8-28, then winning game one 3-1 Friday night and dropping Saturday and Sunday night's contest. In Dakota Hudson's last start at Security Service Field, while dueling once again against Colorado Springs starter Paolo Espino, he picked up the win after six, six-hit, one-run innings. Espino, who took the loss in the last outing against Memphis, took a tough loss after allowing just four hits through five innings. On Saturday night, Hudson put together an impressive eight-inning, shutout four-hit performance with nine strikeouts. On Sunday night Redbirds starter Austin Gomber threw six scoreless innings, allowing just five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Box Score / Game Log

Perhaps being a bit protective, the writer of the above summary failed to mention that Corbin Burnes was the victim of the 3rd inning uprising.

Here's the ugliness in line item form -- note the words "line drive" making repeated appearances.

Memphis Bottom of the 3rd

Austin Gomber singles on a ground ball to shortstop Orlando Arcia.

Oscar Mercado lines into a double play, third baseman Andres Blanco to first baseman Ji-Man Choi. Austin Gomber doubled off 1st.

Rangel Ravelo homers (3) on a line drive to left center field.

Patrick Wisdom singles on a line drive to right fielder Brett Phillips.

Alex Mejia singles on a soft line drive to center fielder Keon Broxton. Patrick Wisdom to 2nd.

Andrew Knizner doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Tyrone Taylor. Patrick Wisdom scores. Alex Mejia to 3rd.

Wilfredo Tovar walks.

Ramon Urias singles on a line drive to center fielder Keon Broxton. Alex Mejia scores. Andrew Knizner scores. Wilfredo Tovar to 2nd.

Adolis Garcia lines out to third baseman Andres Blanco.

In a game where his team was limited to zero runs on six singles and two walks, it may not be fair to highlight Orlando Arcia's night, but here's his 0-for-4:

Strikes out swinging, strikes out swinging, pops out to second, flies out to center
