I'm an old fart and sometimes forget/get confused about the ages of Brewer prospects. I follow the minor league box-scores and was happy about a recent surge by Tucker Neuhaus, but tempered my optimism because I assumed he was at least 25 years old. Imagine my surprise when I brought his page up and saw he is 22 years old and in high A ball. Sometimes, like Jonathan Lucroy, prospects sneak up on you. I hope Tucker is one of these.

Corbin Burnes can't replicate dominant road form in loss

Brent Briggeman, Colorado Springs Gazette

Perhaps Corbin Burnes' massive home vs. road disparity can be chalked up to sample size as much as the altitude and massive outfield at Security Service Field.

Burnes wasn't bad on Tuesday, but he wasn't his usual dominant self on the road as he gave up three runs in a 4-2 Sky Sox loss at Nashville.

Burnes, a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball, was perfect through three innings before giving up a pair of runs in the fourth and allowing another to cross in the sixth.

He gave up just four hits in 52/3 innings, striking out five while walking four.

Before Tuesday, Burnes had largely dominated on the road, posting a 2.70 ERA in four starts with a 37-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 30 innings while allowing just 22 hits.

At home, however, he had an 8.64 ERA in four starts with 12 strikeouts, 11 walks and 25 hits allowed in 162/3 innings.

"He's got a very good curveball, and that's the pitch that I think is more affected here than any other pitch," Sky Sox manager Rick Sweet said after Burnes' most recent home start on Thursday, "But he also has a slider and a change-up that he uses well, too."

Over his last two road starts, Burnes has come down to earth a bit in allowing seven runs over 10 2/3 innings. Of course, maybe that's because of matchup issues with Nashville, which was the opponent both times.

Point is, nine starts into Burnes' Triple-A stint is probably too early to notice any definitive patterns, even if stats were leaning heavily that direction.

"I look more at how he pitched," Sweet said last week. "I thought he battled. I thought he competed.

"It's tougher to dominate (in Colorado Springs). You have to battle here the whole time. That's why we're out of here. That's why they're moving, finally."

Over his last four starts Braden Webb has lowered his ERA from 9.82 to 5.34. Over his last two starts - 10.2 IP, 5 H, 9 BB (yikes), 13 K. Hopefully the walks are the result of working on a specific pitch or two.

Neuhaus and Mudcats Walk-Off Wood Ducks 2-1 in Ten Innings

The Mudcats came back from a 1-0 deficit in the ninth before winning 2-1 on Wednesday

cut.jpg

Cooper Hummel, after showing some surprising hitting ability last year (.749 OPS), has had a disappointing season thus far (.542 OPS). Maybe he was working on the outfield play too much? Today, at least, he came up big with a two out bottom of the ninth single to tie the game. The Mudcats then went on to win in the 10th on a Tucker Neuhaus base hit. Tucker showed a lot of promise in 2016 when he OPS'd .957 including .911 at Wisconsin. Since then he fell to .749 last year with injuries and is at .760 this year. He has worked all of the infield positions and is now playing left field. All of them with at least some skill.

Braden Webb is a toolsy type pitcher with a hard fastball and big curveball. He just hasn't had much command so far as you can see from his walk numbers. The same can be said for Conor Harber who also pitched today. Luke Barker threw 3 pitches to get the win by retiring his one batter on a double play to end the tenth.

Braden Webb 5 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K

Conor Harber 2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K

Keston Hiura 0-3, 2 BB

Biloxi Box Score

Lots of bad things for Biloxi on Wednesday. 14 strikeouts, only one walk. Three errors. 0-11 with runners in scoring position. This all lead to a 3-2 lose to Mobile.

On the positive side, the Shucker pitching staff did well. Cody Ponce led the way, giving up one earned run in 5.2 innings of work. Although he took the lose, Ponce gave up only five hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out four. Unfortunately, a Lucas Erceg error led to a pair of unearned runs. Wuilder Rodriguez and Jon Olczak kept the BayBears off the board in relief.

At the plate, Troy Stokes Jr. highlighted a lackluster attack, getting a pair of hits.

Batting

Troy Stokes Jr.: 2-4, 2B

Clint Coulter: 1-2, 2B

Pitching

Cody Ponce: 5.2 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 0BB, 4K, lose

Wuilder Rodriguez: 1.1 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K

Jon Olczak: 1.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 1BB, 2K

Notes

Corey Ray stole a base on Wednesday, making him 10 for 10 for the season.

Eric Sogard was randomly replaced after concluding his 0-for-5 night with a 10th inning groundout.

Col. Springs Top of the 10th

Pitching Change: Dean Kiekhefer replaces Raul Alcantara.

Nate Orf starts inning at 2nd base.

Eric Sogard grounds out to first baseman Nick Martini. Nate Orf to 3rd.

Keon Broxton strikes out swinging.

Christian Bethancourt singles on a line drive to left fielder BJ Boyd. Nate Orf scores.

Brett Phillips singles on a ground ball to pitcher Dean Kiekhefer. Christian Bethancourt to 2nd.

Tyrone Taylor pops out to second baseman Steve Lombardozzi Jr.

Nashville Bottom of the 10th

Defensive Substitution: Gabriel Noriega replaces second baseman Eric Sogard, batting 2nd, playing second base.

***

Now at .229 with just two walks in 48 Sky Sox at-bats, and with the emergence of Tyler Saladino (sorry, but thank you, Nick Franklin injury), Sogard's 40-man spot may be in jeopardy, if it's needed.

NOTE: I just watched the replay, it wasn't evident of a Sogard injury.

Final: Quad Cities 8, Wisconsin 4

River Bandits Rally Late to Beat Wisconsin

Rattlers 4-1 lead isn't enough

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

cut.jpg

DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-4 on Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park.

Wisconsin (21-25) scored a run in the top of the second inning by taking advantage of a bout of wildness by Bandits starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval. KJ Harrison drew a leadoff walk. Gabriel García reached on an infield single and Devin Hairston walked with one out to load the bases. Then, Sandoval uncorked a wild pitch to allow Harrison to score.

Quad Cities (25-20) put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. Wisconsin starter Christian Taugner retired the first two batters of the inning, but walked Jake Meyers to extend the inning. Jonathan Arauz followed with a triple into the right-field corner and Meyers scored the tying run.

The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the fifth. Payton Henry singled and Nick Roscetti doubled to start the inning. Then, Tristen Lutz lined a three-run homer to right with one out and the Rattlers were up 4-1. The homer was the fifth of the season for Lutz.

Taugner allowed one run over five innings and struck out five before leaving the game in the hands of the Wisconsin bullpen.

Jose Cuas walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the sixth inning. Then, Miguelangel Sierra doubled to drive that runner home. Next, Cuas walked Jake Adams and a wild pitch on ball four allowed Sierra to take third base. The River Bandits sent Adams to steal second with Michael Papierski at the plate. The throw went through to second to get Adams, but Sierra raced home and scored without a play to cut the Wisconsin lead to one.

Cuas got the first out in the bottom of the seventh inning before giving way for reliever Cody Beckman.

Beckman gave up a single on an 0-2 pitch to the first batter he faced, walked the second batter, and gave up an infield single to the third batter to see the River Bandits load the bases.

Corey Julks, who had four hits on Tuesday for Quad Cities, sent a grounder deep in the hole at short. Devin Hairston made a diving attempt, but the ball glanced off his glove into left. Two runs scored by the time the ball was retrieved by the Rattlers defense and the River Bandits had a 5-4 lead.

Jake Adams, who hit two homers on Tuesday for the Bandits, added insurance for Quad Cities with a line drive off the wall in left-center with two outs for a two-run double and a 7-4 lead.

A misplayed flyball led to a lead-off double in the bottom of the eighth. That eventually allowed Meyers to hit an RBI triple with two outs to make the score 8-4.

Wisconsin was held scoreless by the Quad Cities bullpen after the homer by Lutz. Juan Robles pitched 3-1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Carlos Sanabria pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

The final game of the series at Modern Woodmen Park is Thursday evening. Alec Bettinger (3-3, 4.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities will counter with Cesar Rosado (2-2, 5.02). Game time is 6:35pm.

2:01 Is Corbin Burnes' recent mediocre performance more of a function of his home park/league, or is he really having problems? Do you see him making any MLB starts this year?

Eric A Longenhagen

2:03 Very likely the ballpark. Not sure he debuts this year because so many other viable guys are already on the 40-man and Burnes is not. Houser, Woodruff, etc.
