Biloxi Box Score

This is one of the weirdest games to show up in a box score. The Chattanooga pitchers gave up nine hits and 11 walks - and struck out only one batter. The Lookout even had three errors to add in some more baserunners. The result was a 12-7 Biloxi win as the Shuckers put a few truckloads of men on base.

For the Shuckers, the big star was Jake Gatewood, who had four hits, including three doubles and three RBI. He also walked once. Corey Ray added a triple, two walks and a stolen base, while Dustin Houle pitched in with a hit and two walks.

On the mound, Kodi Medeiros gave up five earned runs (eight hits, one walk) in five innings of work.

Batting

Corey Ray: 1-3, 3B, 2BB, SB

Jake Gatewood: 4-4, 3 2B, BB, 3 RBI

Notes

Gatewood's big night pushed his batting average up to .241. He is now tied for fourth in the Southern League with 26 RBI.

Former Brewer farmhand Zack Jones pitches for Chattanooga. This year he has a 2.76 ERA despite walking 17 batters in 16.1 innings. He has struck out 26 and allowed only five hits.

I have got to learn to stop getting my hopes up on Medeiros.

My hopes are very high...nothing has slowed. Between his 2nd half last season and 1st half this year, he's turning a corner. Pitching deeper in games, having fewer big innings.

Supak Totals Seven Strikeouts as Mudcats Win Fourth Straight

Ryan Aguilar hit a game tying homer in the seventh while helping the Mudcats to a 4-2 victory

cut.jpg

A strong start by Trey Supak and a two inning save by Luke Barker led the way for the Mudcats' 4th win in a row. Ryan Aguilar is quietly having a very nice year for the Mudcats. He plays a good centerfield and made a few plays in this game. This is the first time I have seen Keston Hiura in the field. It's a little hard to tell about the throwing because the second base throw is so awkward, often coming across the body. He did make one throw from short right to 3rd base that looked okay. He also made a heads up play when a grounder came to Ronnie Gideon with a man at first. Gideon looked to 2nd first and then didn't have time to beat the runner to first. It didn't look like Supak was going to get there in time but Keston Hiura covered first and they got the out.

Trey Supak 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K

Luke Barker 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, Save

Keston Hiura 2-4, 2B

Tucker Neuhaus 2-4, played LF

Ryan Aguilar 1-3, BB, HR

Luis Aviles Jr. 1-3, BB

Cooper Hummel 1-2, BB

Carolina Box Score

Carolina Game Log

The 7th inning was the key to this game:

Final: Wisconsin 2, Quad Cities 1

Rattlers Win 2-1 to Start Road Trip

Hernández has another strong start; Orimoloye & McInerney homer in support at QC

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

cut.jpg

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers began their 11-game road trip with a 2-1 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park. The Rattlers did just enough to pick up the win in another close game.

The River Bandits (23-20) nearly took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Roman Garcia doubled to start the frame. Jake Meyers singled to center and Garcia tried to score. Centerfielder Joantgel Segovia fielded the ball cleanly and came up firing to the plate to catch Garcia for the out and keep the game scoreless.

Demi Orimoloye and Pat McInerney gave the Rattlers (21-23) the lead in the top of the fourth. Orimoloye lined a lead-off homer to right-center for the first run of the game. McInerney cracked a two-out solo shot to center and the Rattlers were up 2-0. Orimoloye's homer was his fourth of the season. McInerney's homer was his eighth of the season.

Wisconsin starter Nelson Hernández retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the fifth, but he walked Jonathan Lacroix, the number nine hitter for the River Bandits, on a 3-2 pitch. Jake Meyers made Hernández pay for the walk by lining the next pitch for a double to left-center. Lacroix scored easily and the Wisconsin lead was cut to one run.

Hernández would get the final out of the fifth, retire the River Bandits in order in the sixth, and get the first out of the seventh, but he was removed from the game after walking Colton Shaver.

Michael Petersen took over for Hernández and got out of the seventh by getting the next batter to ground into a 5-4-3 double play. Petersen would work around a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning to maintain the 2-1 lead.

Rodrigo Benoit was called from the Wisconsin bullpen to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning, but there was a slight scare before the inning began. Benoit slipped on the mound while delivering a warm-up pitch and appeared to injure his left leg. He received a few extra warm-up tosses and was deemed ready to go. Ready to go would be putting it mildly.

Benoit struck out the side in order, including a called third strike to end the game, earn his fourth save, and give the Rattlers their third straight win.

Hernández picked up his sixth win of the season. He has won five straight decisions and has allowed a total of three runs over 20-1/3 innings in his last three starts.

The last five Timber Rattlers games have been decided by one run.

The series continues on Tuesday morning at Modern Woodmen Park. Dylan File (5-2, 3.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities will counter with Leovanny Rodriguez (1-0, 2.25). Game time is 11:00am.

Colorado Springs Box Score

Not to rag on the guy, but Eric Sogard's .237 average sticks out like a sore thumb. #FreeNateOrf on base 3 more times. Tristan Archer continues to produce, and I'm a little surprised the Brewers haven't given him a shot yet. He has an oddball delivery, but decent ability to command plus go multiple innings.

Gatewood's May line after yesterday's performance:

.324/.358/.514

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

SKY SOX OPEN ROAD TRIP WITH LOSS IN NASHVILLE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Sky Sox lost the first game of their road trip and their four-game series versus the Nashville Sounds 5-4 Monday night. The Sky Sox are now 5-3 against the Sounds this year. After having won five games in a row against Nashville initially, Colorado Springs has now dropped three in a row to the Sounds.

After going three up and three down in the bottom of the first inning, the home team found their way onto the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Anthony Garcia became the Sounds first baserunner of the evening after drawing a walk, advancing to third on a Christian Bethancourt throwing error on a pickoff attempt from behind the dish. Jake Smolinski drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners, and a Ramon Laureano sacrifice fly brought home Garcia for Nashville's first run of the evening. A Sheldon Neuse double in the next at-bat would score Smolinski to give Nashville a 2-0 lead.

The Sounds tacked on another pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to double their lead. With one out on the board, Smolinski walked for the second time tonight, and with two outs on the board Laureano singled to move Smolinski to third, advancing to second himself on the throw. Neuse walked to load the bases, and a Jorge Mateo brought home Smolinski and Laureano to make it 4-0 Nashville.

The Sky Sox rebutted in the top of the next inning with three hits in a row. Dylan Moore hit a bunt single on the first pitch he saw, followed by a Kyle Wren single to right. Still with no outs in the inning, Gabriel Noriega doubled to score Moore and push Wren to third. Nate Orf made the first out of the frame in productive fashion, flying out to left to score Wren from third and make it a 4-2 ballgame. Eric Sogard followed suit with a double to score Noriega and cut the deficit to one.

Tristan Archer retired five Nashville batters in a row for the Sky Sox between the fifth and sixth innings, but with two outs in the bottom of the sixth Laureano hit a solo jack for his second hit and RBI of the night to extend Nashville's lead to 5-3.

That score would hold until the top of the ninth inning, when the Sky Sox rallied late in an eventful inning. Down to their final two outs, Wren drew a walk, followed by a Noriega single. Quintin Berry then came into the game to pinch-run for Noriega at first and represent the tying run, but a double-steal attempt ended with Wren being thrown out at third and Berry safely taking second. The Sky Sox regained a little momentum when Orf was hit-by-pitch right on the hands to once again give Colorado Springs two baserunners with the tying run on first and the winning run at the plate. Down to his final strike, Sogard would single to score Berry and give Colorado Springs a fighting chance, but a Tyrone Taylor strikeout would strand Orf and Sogard and bring the game to an end with a final score of 5-4, as the Sounds won their third victory in a row over the Sky Sox.

The Sky Sox are in the midst of a nine-game road trip. First, Colorado Springs will take on the Nashville Sounds for four games before heading to Memphis to play the Redbirds for five more games. The Sky Sox head back home for a five-game homestand beginning May 30 against the Iowa Cubs.

Tomorrow's Expectation: In the second game of the four-game set against the Nashville Sounds, the Sky Sox are sending righty Corbin Burnes to the mound to face righty Chris Bassitt for the Sounds. The last time the Sky Sox faced the Sounds was in Nashville on their last road trip, splitting the series at two games apiece.

Orf on the Rise: The sacrifice fly by Nate Orf in the fifth inning Monday night was his 16th career sacrifice fly with the Sky Sox, passing Garrett Atkins for 9th place on the sacrifice fly list. Next up at tied for 7th: Matt Miller and Ben Petrick with 17 sacrifice flies each.

Shut Out, I think Not: The Sky Sox, who were shut out nine times in 2017, including three straight games against Iowa (8/16-17), avoided their potential first shutout of 2018 Sunday as the Memphis Redbirds took them through six innings scoreless. However, in the seventh, Kyle Wren knocked a sacrifice fly with bases loaded to break the shutout bid.

Ke-Boom: Keon Broxton knocked his sixth home run of the season in game two of Saturday's doubleheader and second of the homestand. His home run Saturday marked his third leadoff home run with the Sky Sox and the first, first-pitch leadoff home run since Eric Young, Jr. on April 21, 2010 in Colorado Springs against the Tacoma Rainiers. Broxton's first four home runs came within the first seven games of season when he hit one on Opening Day (April 5) and hit home runs in three straight games between 4/10 and 4/14.

On-Base Hacker: On Sunday, Kyle Wren continued his on-base rhythm. Wren has only recorded three instances in 2018 where he did not get on base, and they have been all recorded in the month of May. His one hit Sunday gave him 329 hits, tying Eric Young, Jr. for 11th place on the all-time hits list.
