Sophia Minnaert

Just for the record, I think a criticism of someone saying "he said", or "Break-even pitch" or any other little idiosyncrasy that various broadcasters have is perfectly valid. But, at the same time pick whoever the best broadcaster in the business is in your opinion, and they will end up having a pet phrase or weird bit that turns some people off. To turn around and say xyz person is terrible or the worst ever is just silly exaggeration nearly every time.

Now, if the conversation were to turn to Craig Coshun's Pizza Ranch Chocolate Cactus Bread commercial, my feelings would skew much more negatively ;)

If we're going to talk commercials in a Sophia Minneart thread, let's just say she's not a natural at reading scripts written by someone else. When talking in ads, she seems to speak as though she doesn't actually know how many other words are going to be in the sentence, which constantly throws her inflection off...to the extent I'm often surprised that's the take they decided to go with.

Outside of that, she's cute and she seems to like baseball; I don't really need much more than that out of a sideline reporter.

Maybe we can combine this thread into all of the other threads that incessantly complain about TV announcers, radio announcers, studio people, sideline reporters, gameday hosts, PA announcers, beer vendors...I'd like to keep all of my ranting about people doing their jobs (and doing them quite well I might add) on TV in place.

Big Sophia fan, think she has improved quite a bit.

I agree, she has made big time improvements. I wasn't a fan initially, but honestly she won me over when she started breaking out her Spanish speaking skills in interviews. That's savvy & very dedicated. There can't be that many sideline reporters around the league (aside from Spanish language broadcasts) that bring that to the table.

She looks better now with shorter hair. That would be a great job for a gal who likes sports. Only a couple of women have been in the booth calling games. I missed my calling...

Ha. The only thing I took from that video was how much better she looked with longer hair.

Not related to her but since someone mentioned it, hearing Lepay say "break even pitch" basically every time there is a 1-1 count does get a tad old.

like nails on a chalkboard , and makes as much sense as Jason Bateman in Dodgeball made

At least somebody finally got Schroeder to stop saying "still and all".

I like Sophia, but Jerry Augustine and Telly are just hilariously awful. Like up north commercial funny-bad.

Sophia Minnaert is, in my opinion, the All Time greatest sideline reporter because she speaks Spanish and is able to get insight from the Brewers Spanish speaking players on an entirely different level than non-Spanish speaking people could get. She is also a pro in her mannerisms, and consistent.

To me Sophia is the only person on the FSN-WI crew who is completely irreplaceable.

Sophia is fine, I don't mind her at all. When Trenni was here (sadly for only one year), she was really good.

A little off topic, but Trenni was the "sideline" reporter for last month's Boston Marathon was able to induce an epic interview with the women's winner (who was on the verge of hypothermia) that had my running friends talking for days.

The guy they replaced her with that had a somewhat similar first name was really terrible.

BTW, does anyone here remember Bob Brainard?

Yes, I sure do remember Brainerd. He got canned when the FS-Wisconsin producers decided they wanted to take the game broadcasts in a more serious direction, supposedly.

People who complain about sideline reporters are really searching for something to complain about.......my goodness.....

I'm not sure if this was a joke or not at the end but if it was it was a good one.

Melvin had his and that's. Rock has his my goodness. Hard to complain about people having a phrase they say too much. She is a decent sideline reporter.

1. This thread is reminding me why I more often listen than watch, if we're not at Miller Park.

More shallowly: We made it through the Ann Carroll days, so most everything is gravy now, for me. (Apologies to Ann because IIRC she has since had health issues.)

2. Sophia went to high school in my neighborhood, so that's kind of cool, though we didn't move there until just after she graduated.

3. Super props to Sophia for speaking Spanish as needed in player interviews. How could that not make the players feel more at ease?

4. Trenni's still the best I've seen for Brewers sideline coverage.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I agree with most that Sofia started a bit rough and has really found a nice groove. She is very solid and I feel grateful to have a reporter that knows the sport.

I was a broadcast major and did alot of on air talent for Marquette. It is almost impossible to not say something wrong, stupid, or stumble when on air enough. Those who do it well should really be appreciated. I find it pretty annoying when people use one example to bash an announcer. If you want to point out a quirk you dislike, fine, but it doesn't discount the broadcaster as a hole.

And yes, the LePay "break even pitch" gets to me too, but he is also a pretty solid backup for the crew.

I don't understand this fascination with her ability to communicate in Spanish. You can ask a player "So how did that feel to hit a walk-off HR?" in any language, and I don't need to hear the answer. Or the question for that matter.

Ha, I get your larger point about basically not caring about the sideline reporter/conversation at all and generally agree.

But if you're going to be in this job or discussing who is good at it, being able to speak Spanish is a huge plus when a third to half of the team has Spanish for a first language. On a side not, how incredible is it that such a large portion of MLB is Latino. All these small population tiny countries with next to ne resources produce almost as many players as the US. It's crazy to think about. Or maybe a bit embarrassing that we're not better if you look at from the USA perspective.

So you just don't want her asking anyone any questions?

Actually, no. It rubs me the wrong way when a player has a huge moment and barely has 5 seconds to enjoy it with the team before there's a mic in his face.

In football, there's at least a purpose (in theory) to having a sideline reporter. They can find out about injuries.

I don't understand having a sideline reporter in baseball at all. Sophia seems to be fine I guess, I just don't feel like I "know" her like Uek, Rock, Brian, Auggie, etc. They all have their shortfalls, but at least watching/listening to them every day there's a connection there. With Sophia, there's just nothing there. Just feels like she's acting like a reporter instead of just being herself.

That said, yea I don't really care. Thread was here, so that's my 2 cents.

Does anyone else think it is a problem having Sophia Minnert asking Craig Counsell questions after the game as a media person when she is now employed by the team?? I just don't understand how she is going to be willing to ask the tough questions that demand answers after a game like yesterday. The obvious questions were why Knebel so long?? Why pull Williams? Why not stall for time or demand a stoppage? Yet we start with Chacin threw the ball great right Craig?? Still an awesome first half heh Craig? Watch post game presses in Chicago New York Philly. Matheny is gone because those dudes were grilling him nightly on his mistakes. I am tired of watching Counsell throw out some jive and keep on moving. She is not the only problem of course but the most obvious. I think she is awesome on the broadcast but should not be put in a conflict position if she can't get us answers. My take. Thoughts?
