Corey Ray with 2 homers tonight.....

Ray has been hitting the ball well of late.

For the year, he his hitting .269 with a .349 OBP and an .829 OPS. He has 7 SBs - and hasn't been caught. One impressive stat is that almost 1/2 of his hits (20 of 42) have been for extra bases. 12 doubles, 3 triples and 5 HRs.

He's also improved his walk rate to a solid 10%, and cut his strikeouts dramatically (from 31% last year to about 23% this year).

Ray has - thus far - shown to be very streaky, so I'm not holding my breath that he won't go into a funk and have his number plummet. But it's nice to see him doing pretty all right.

I'm curious to hear how his defense has progressed. He's been playing CF 90% of the time. If he can play the middle well, that really helps him out.

I weirdly would rather have a minor leaguer that's developing be streaky than consistently decent. I feel like it shows what he's capable of should he develop consistency. With his k rate, keep in mind he struck out 10 times in the first 4 games. I know they all count, but looking through his game logs...his k rate looks downright reasonable. His OPS improved from 731 in April to 1036 in May...great trend. A few more good weeks and he'll truly be forcing his way back onto the fantasy radar. Good thing we didn't trade him this offseason for pennies on the dollar.

Final (Game One): Wisconsin 4, Beloit 2

Rattlers Rally for Fifth Straight Win

Wisconsin beats Beloit 4-2 in game one of Tuesday's twinbill

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

cut.jpg

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers missed on their first two prime scoring opportunities in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Beloit Snappers. The Rattlers did not waste their third as Jay Feliciano smacked a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 2-2 tie at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers would close out the game and match their season-high winning streak with a 4-2 victory over their in-state rivals.

The Snappers (13-19) grabbed the lead in the first inning of game one. Wisconsin starting pitcher Bowden Francis walked back-to-back hitters with one out in the first inning. Hunter Hargrove blooped a single to right with two outs to chase home the run to put Beloit in front.

Wisconsin (18-19) had great opportunities in both the second and third innings. They loaded the bases with one out in the second, but Feliciano hit into an inning-ending double play. The Rattlers got the first two batters on base in the third, but a popup on a bunt attempt and another inning-ending double play stopped the rally in its tracks.

The Rattlers evened the score in the bottom of the fourth. Gabriel García reached on a double with two outs. Gilbert Lara was next and he dropped a single into shallow center to score García with the tying run.

Beloit went back in front in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Allen singled and stole second. Trace Loehr doubled to the gap in right-center and Allen scored for a 2-1 lead.

Tristen Lutz brought the Rattlers back to even in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out solo home run. The homer was his third of the season.

The Rattlers loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth inning and this time they cashed in the chance. The frame started with a single by Demi Orimoloye. Pat McInerney attempted to bunt Orimoloye into scoring position and reached on an error. García was next and he bunted both runners into scoring position. The Snappers elected to walk Lara intentionally to load the bases for Feliciano.

Feliciano also had to face a new pitcher when he stepped to the plate in the sixth inning as reliever Seth Martinez entered the game. Feliciano made the most of his second opportunity as he lined a single to left to score two runs and give the Rattlers a 4-2 lead.

Robbie Hitt, who relieved for Francis at the start of the sixth inning, took the mound in the top of the seventh inning and closed out the game with a perfect frame to earn his first professional save.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Rattlers. The loss was the sixth in a row for the Snappers.

Wisconsin Box Score

Gabriel Garcia (pictured above) and Gilbert Lara each had two hits and Tristen Lutz homered and walked to pull the Rattlers within a game of .500 after entering the month 7-16. While Joantgel Segovia (who also added a hit) has an 1100 OPS in May, Garcia has actually been hotter with an 1157 OPS. At .230, his batting average is still ugly but he's really improved his approach at the plate and has made some loud contact. He's one of those guys that when he hits it, you can really hear it connect. I've mentioned his defense at third is... maybe he's a first baseman. But it's smart to keep giving him reps there for the time being because you'd rather find out in A ball than trying it out a few years from now.

For the second game in a row, Bowden Francis' command eluded him as he was leaving a lot of balls up and out of the strike zone. But he managed to limit the damage to 2 runs in 5 innings of work. One of my favorite Rattler pitchers, Robbie Hitt, cleaned up the final two innings flawlessly including a strike out. Everything Hitt throws - fastball, cutter, change, curve (I think, though the cutter/curve may be variations of the same pitch) - moves. While the ball going here, there, and everywhere can work to his detriment at times, if he's able to have any sort of uptick in command, watch out.

Wisconsin Game Log

Rattlers take the lead late:

Wisconsin Bottom of the 6th

Demi Orimoloye singles on a ground ball to left fielder Lazaro Armenteros.

Pat McInerney hits a sacrifice bunt. Fielding error by pitcher Jared Poche'. Demi Orimoloye to 2nd. Pat McInerney to 1st.

Gabriel Garcia out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Jesus Lage to first baseman Hunter Hargrove. Demi Orimoloye to 3rd. Pat McInerney to 2nd.

Jared Poche' intentionally walks Gilbert Lara.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Zach Clark replaces Pat McInerney.

Pitching Change: Seth Martinez replaces Jared Poche'.

Jay Feliciano singles on a line drive to left fielder Lazaro Armenteros. Demi Orimoloye scores. Zach Clark scores. Gilbert Lara to 2nd.

Devin Hairston strikes out swinging.

Joantgel Segovia flies out to center fielder Mickey McDonald.

Final (Game Two): Beloit 7, Wisconsin 6

Snappers Spoil Rattlers Rally With Late Run

Beloit takes game two 7-6 with a run in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

cut.jpg

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers staged a furious comeback in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers trailed 6-2 going to the bottom of the sixth, but evened the score with a four run outburst. Then, the Snappers received a clutch two-out RBI hit in the top of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead that they would not lose. The teams split the twinbill with Wisconsin winning game one 4-2.

The teams traded runs in the second inning. In the top of the second, Austin Beck singled and stole second. Then, Jordan Devencenzi doubled to knock in Beck for the Snappers. Wisconsin loaded the bases in the bottom of the second on singles by Pat McInerney and Gilbert Lara and a walk to Devin Hairston. McInerney would score on a wild pitch by Beloit starter Bryce Conley threw a wild pitch.

Beloit (14-19) went back in front with a four-run third inning that saw them drive Wisconsin starter Carlos Herrera out of the game. The frame started with a walk, a stolen base, a single, and another stolen base. Lazaro Armenteros, the third hitter of the inning, doubled to knock in both runners and put the Snappers up 3-1.

Herrera gave up a single and hit a batter to load the bases with no outs and end his day.

Reliever Michael Petersen entered in a tough spot and allowed two runs to score. Devencenzi had an RBI single and Jack Meggs grounded into a force out at second that let in the run to put the Snappers up 5-1.

Jay Feliciano, who had a two-run single to put Wisconsin (18-20) in the lead in game one of the doubleheader, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Snappers scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Trace Loehr.

The insurance was not enough as the Rattlers rallied for four runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with one out against Jesus Zambrano and Lara lined a single to center off the glove of the Beloit shortstop to score two runs. Nick Highberger took over for Zambrano as Beloit's third pitcher of the game and got the second out on a ground out that moved two runners into scoring position for Feliciano.

The Rattlers left fielder came through with single to right that scored both runs to tie the game 6-6. Feliciano had five RBI in the twinbill with the Snappers.

Matt Hardy, who had come in from the Wisconsin bullpen to get the final out of the sixth inning, gave up a leadoff single to Beck, who had three hits in the nightcap, in the top of the seventh. A sacrifice bunt moved Beck to second before Hardy got the second out on a foul pop. But, Hardy could not get the final out before Jesus Lopez sliced a single to right to score Beck with the go-ahead run.

The Rattlers tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh as KJ Harrison and McInerney draw walks with two outs, but Gabriel García, who had run for Lara in the sixth inning, grounded into a game-ending force play.

The loss ended Wisconsin's five-game winning streak. The win ended Beloit's six-game losing streak.

Game four of the series is set for Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field. Nelson Hernández (5-2, 3.77) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has named Ivan Andueza (0-1, 7.84) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 6:35pm.
