The Marcos Diplan we've been waiting 1.5 years for showed up tonight - 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8K

Zach Brown has gotten over his slow start and now has three consecutive starts with 1 ER or less - 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K tonight

The Grim Grieper with his 12th save so far, only a month in. Not the most useful stat, but I wonder what the minor league record is for saves in a season.

If you've followed the Mudcats media notes, you've seen the breakdown of team ERA in the late innings. The Carolina middle and late relief, with an exception or two, has been less than stellar, the 15-18 team would be over .500 by a few games with even modest performances. Burned again tonight (and yes, we try to focus on the positives, but it's piling up).

Mudcats Squander Late Lead in 4-3 Loss

Carolina lost a 3-1 lead in the seventh while falling to the Astros 4-3 at Jim Perry Stadium

Every so often Marcos Diplan tantalizes you with one of these games but he can't repeat it. Let's hope this is the start of something for Marcos. He did issue four walks in six innings however. Alec Kenilvort gave up 3 runs in his one inning that made the difference. The Mudcats could only manage 5 hits. The only extra base hit was a double by Ronnie Gideon that skipped by the Astros' left fielder on the Jim Perry Field astroturf. Keston Hiura made it through the 7th at second base before being taken out.

Marcos Diplan 6 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

Alec Kenilvort 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Dallas Carroll 1-3, BB

Weston Wilson 1-3, BB

Keston Hiura 0-4

The home runs have really been the only thing holding Brown back from being one of the top 3-5 pitchers in the Southern League this year. He's among the the league leaders in a number of categories, and I believe he is the only one to have a WHIP of better than 1.20 (1.06), a K/9 of better than 9 (9.53) and a K/BB of better than 3 (4.67). It's just those six home runs. If he can more consistently keep the ball in the ballpark the rest of the way, he's on his way to a really good season.

Final: Colorado Springs 6, Nashville 5

Your only online home for this game summary --

SKY SOX CONTINUE UNDEFEATED STREAK AGAINST NASHVILLE IN GAME TWO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After four lead changes, the Sky Sox walked away with a 6-5 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday night to improve to 5-0 against Nashville this season.

The home team found their way onto the board first here in game two. In the bottom of the second, Colorado Springs starter Bubba Derby recorded a strikeout to start the inning before issuing a pair of walks to Nick Martini and Josh Phegley. Sheldon Neuse doubled for both Nashville's first hit and RBI of the evening, scoring Martini from second to give the Sounds an early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless third inning, Colorado Springs scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Keon Broxton led off the inning by reaching on a wild third strike from Sounds starter Frankie Montas, and after Eric Sogard flew out to right field, Ji-Man Choi sent a homer over the right-center field wall to give Colorado Springs a one-run lead.

The lead was short-lived however, with Nashville answering in the bottom half of the frame. Martini matched Choi's effort with a solo homer of his own to tie up the ball game at two apiece. Phegley followed Martini's homer with his second walk of the evening, moving up on a Neuse single as he collected his second hit of the game. Slade Heathcott then lined an RBI single to score Phegley and retake the lead for Nashville at 3-2.

Looking to capitalize on the momentum of the prior inning, Franklin Barreto kicked off the fifth for the Sounds by reaching on an infield error. Anthony Garcia crushed a dinger to left field on the very next pitch for Nashville's second home run in as many innings to extend the Sounds lead by two more runs.

Montas pitched another scoreless inning for Nashville in the sixth, exiting the game after six innings having only allowed two runs on five hits with a sole walk and ten strikeouts. He was replaced on the mound at the start of the seventh by Raul Alcantara, who was unable to record an out before being replaced on the mound himself by Jeremy Bleich in a wild half-inning that saw Colorado Springs score four times on three base hits and two Nashville errors.

Kyle Wren and Gabriel Noriega led off the seventh with back-to-back singles, and with his 18-game hitting streak on the line Nate Orf doubled to score Wren and extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Broxton then hit what would have been a sacrifice fly for an out but a fielding error on the right field line by Garcia allowed Noriega to score and Broxton to reach safely. Alcantara was then replaced on the mound by Bleich, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Sogard, scoring Orf and tying the game at 5-5. With Choi at the plate Broxton stole third for his eighth steal of the season to move within 90 feet of home. Choi then hit into a fielder's choice, but first baseman Heathcott had a wide throw home to try to get Broxton and his throwing error allowed Broxton to score safely and make it 6-5 Sky Sox. Jacob Nottingham drew a walk before Christian Bethancourt hit into a double play to end the topsy-turvy half-inning. 6-5 proved to be the final score however, as Colorado Springs took game two.

Tomorrow's game three against the Nashville Sounds is scheduled for 6:35 PM Central at First Tennessee Park. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds.

NOTES:

Tomorrow's Expectation: In the third game of this four-game series against the Nashville Sounds the Sky Sox are sending righty Michael Brady to the mound to face right-hander Daniel Gossett for Nashville.

Wednesday Warriors: Coming into Wednesday night's game the Sky Sox were undefeated at 4-0 in Wednesday contests this season, and with the win improved to 5-0 on hump day in 2018.

Five in a Row*: With a win Wednesday night the Sky Sox improve to 5-0 against the Sounds this season, after having gone 3-0 against Nashville at home in Security Service Field last week (*with game four being suspended due to travel curfew).

You Underestimate the Streakiness: Nate Orf currently boasts an active 19-game hitting streak, which was continued Wednesday night with a double in the wacky seventh inning. In 19 games, Orf has gone 34-for-73 with 17 runs, 14 RBI, and four stolen bases. Of those 19 games, Orf has had multiple hits in 11 of them. In fact, there have only been four games this season when Orf has NOT had a hit. His longest streak last season was nine games.

Box Score / Game Log

Keon Broxton scored two runs and drove in one despite a golden sombrero (0-for-4, four K's). That's hard to do.

Eric Sogard also had a sacrifice fly, but his hitless streak continued, 0-for-4. He batter 3rd in the lineup, by the way. Classic.

We're surprised when Jacob Nottingham does not collect two hits. We were not surprised in this one. (That's some double-negative fun for you. Figure out how he did without looking first?)

Nineteen walks in 36 innings for Bubba Derby, not ideal.
