Segovia

I'm sure he's probably been brought up in another thread on this board, but I don't have time to go looking around for it. So, I'm going to start a thread just for him.

What can anyone tell me about this guy? Obviously he's tearing it up so far with the T Rats this year, and looks like he was a kid that hit for a high avg a couple of years ago in the DSL and Pioneer leagues. But, what else do we know about his game? Is he starting to bulk up a little now as I see he's hitting more doubles. Is he a plus defender in the field?

Just curious what anyone can share about this kid, and if he's someone that should start to be taken seriously as a prospect down the road?

Segovia could always hit, the power is new. Just .254 slugging last year. That's hard to do! He has literally doubled that this year to .511. Injuries derailed him a little, but he is still age appropriate for Wisc at 21. But to be fair, he is repeating there this year.

He is athletic and has some speed in the OF. Seems to really go after balls hard this season compared to last. He does not have a noodle arm, not a cannon either. I would say maybe average, but don't hold me to that.

Definitely a prospect in my opinion, in that #25 range but still a prospect. When he gets promoted to A+ this season and he keeps hitting, then he'll really have my attention.

Kyle Wren-type player, minus Wren's "power". Might be a slightly about average defender. Has mainly played LF with some CF. Arm is nothing special. Seems to have decent base stealing ability. Most likely has a ceiling of an AAAA player or fringe backup OF.

That said, he looks way more comfortable at the plate this year compared to last. Does have more extra base hits this season, but I haven't really seen any hits that made me go WOW.

Super nice guy.

Great - thanks for the feedback. Sounds like a kid to at least keep an eye on, but certainly not someone that is going to shoot up prospect rankings. Just didn't know much about this guy, so I appreciate some of the first hand knowledge.

Oh boy.....the Hurricane! How quickly we forget some of these old "prospects" that put up some good numbers in the lower levels but just never quite had enough to make it as big leaguers.

Wow - had no idea that Iribarren was still plugging away with Cincy. And I guess I had forgotten that he had at least a couple of cups of coffee throughout his career. Good for him.

With his lack of power and being pretty much a LF only I wonder if the Brewers risk losing him in the rule 5 draft next year. Maybe they might even include him in a trade. One thing I did notice is he has improved a great deal with his base stealing. Was a horrible 18/41 prior to 2017 and has been 22/27 for over a 80% success rate since then.

It's great to see Segovia hitting, but the utter lack of power is going to limit him. The guy has one HR in 1000+ at bats. Kyle Wren hits HRs at 5x the rate of Segovia.

I said the same thing about Michael Brantley once upon a time. Different players obviously.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

He doubled his HR total last night with a 3/5 (HR, 2B and 1B) and now has a .525 slugging percent.
