2018-05-04: Pirates (Kingham) at Brewers (Guerra) 7:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 6-4; Yelich Fair/Foul HR Controversy]

What if...Villar had been playing second base tonight and had come up with that grounder that led to the two run homer?

What if...CC challenges the Yelich non home run?

What if...there was a competent home plate umpire?

CC said the replay guys all said the Yelich ball was foul.

Manager has to trust what they are told.

Let's let go of the " if only Villar was playing 2nd he would have come up with that ball" stuff......No reason to think Villar would have made that play. For every good play he makes he does something wrong.....like dropping the throw on the steal that would have gotten Anderson out of an inning before a home run.

Every decision doesn't have to be 2nd guessed.

From what I read he's not really a high level prospect though. Long time minor leaguer. One fantasy outlook said something like "not expected to miss this many bats".

He was ranked between 64 and 80 by three publications' top 100 prospect rankings before 2014 when he got hurt and lost two seasons to TJS. That's really the only reason he's a long time minor leaguer.

And Yelich's ball was foul. Will try to get video of it later.

Not a great game and let’s hope Junior isn’t coming back to earth.

Still I’m ecstatic we are 19-14 at this point in the season with our worst regression offensive fears being realized.

Mlb.com has the video in the box score. You can see in very clearly. The ball is partially visible going behind the screen, then disappears behind the pole(fair side).

Unless I don't understand something, that was absolutely a home run.

The video is posted on this thread, and very clearly shows it was fair. Even mlb.com titled the video Yelich's deep "foul" ball.

ill never undsrstand giving multiple players the day off when divisional rivals come in. Braun, Villar. Sogard is really poor and he starts alot. When he doesnt start, he still finds a way to PH and play. Do we have the depth to dabble with playin our bench players?

Mostly agreed on Sogard.

The reason Braun gets so many days off is because he's 34 and made of glass. Braun's body does not care whether we are playing divisional rivals or cupcakes. He needs regular maintenance days to have any hope of being fully effective for a full season. He is still on pace for 500 ABs and we cannot expect more than that.

Every time Braun has a few good days with no signs of injury people start saying "Keep him in there, he doesn't need the day off". Then his back or calf flares up and he's out of the lineup a couple days anyway. Yes, he needs the days off.

I couldn't get it to post directly here, so I posted a picture and video on twitter. Hope it works.

Fire the Replay Guys. What idiots that can't tell a fair ball from foul. Watch the ball and decide? How about, look at the Fans, When multiple inside the foul ball turn to look at the ball go over their heads and it's facing a direction inside the foul pole, and not towards the outside.

Kingham was well regarded as a pitcher 2014 MLB rank 58. #5 on pirates with this writeup:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curve: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 60 | Overall: 55

Over the course of multiple Drafts, the Pirates aggressively went after high-risk, high-reward high school pitching in later rounds. Kingham was one of those picks, given an above-slot deal in 2010. He might be the first from that crop to impact the big league rotation.

At first glance, it might be easy to put the "mid-rotation" label on Kingham, but there might be more than meets the eye. He has more velocity on his fastball, hitting the mid 90s regularly, than the typical command-and-control starter. Kingham's changeup has improved so much that it might be his second-best offering, and his curve gives him three Major League average or better pitches in his repertoire.

It all comes from Kingham's big 6-foot-5 frame and clean delivery. He has improved every year that he's been with the Bucs, and he is poised to knock on the door in 2014.

2015:Kingham might not have the highest ceiling among pitching prospects, but once he's 100 percent back from surgery, he'll be close to being able to reach it at the big league level.

Then in 16 and 17 while not losing any grades, he just became a #3 to a #4 in opinion. He hasn't done anything to really deserve the demerit in regard, There's just more exciting players added to a top 200 since 2014 he is shuttled to the side.

Thames got a bunch of days off as well. I know they wanna give Santana his games and put Braun at first but when thames comes back id like to see him a bit more. Then again Aguilar is our hottest bat. Bottom line, i can understand splitting time with these bats but i cant comprehend why sogurd is even on the team, much less starting alot while sitting V or A.

At any rate, we havent fared to well against any team not in last place.

Braun out

TH tweet

Counsell said this was planned off day for Ryan Braun, giving him two days off. Calf not expected to be an issue. Should be back in there tomorrow.

Well, he's out of the lineup Saturday as well. We've been through this song and dance before. Say it's just a nagging injury and it's only day to day. Next thing you know he's missing three weeks.
